Two months of travelling... what does that mean to us? Well personally, as I have already shared with a few close friends, I recently felt this "calm" come over me. Back home, I micromanaged most of my life (and others) and small details were very important. This month I was much more patient. I have been able to accept when things don't go exactly as planned and it's decreased the amount of stress in my life a lot! When travelling in a foreign country it's really important (for me anyway) to not sweat the small stuff. With the small stuff set aside, I've had much more time to stop and smell the roses and truly enjoy every moment. I don't want to miss a single thing on this journey and I remind myself of that every ... read more

Our trip from Berastagi to Toba wasn't too bad. We decided to get here by taking public bus which meant 3 cramped vans/buses and a ferry - cramped meaning 15 seaters with 24 people in them leaving standing room only and two people literally hanging out the door! Luckily, all of our bus connection points went extremely smoothly. Whenever we got off one bus, another was waiting to take us to our next destination. In Parapat, the ferry boarding town for Tuk-Tuk, we met a local named Roman who asked where we were headed. We had been recommended a guesthouse by a friend in Berastagi, so we told him MAS Cottages. A huge smile came across his face and he exclaimed “That's where I work!”. When we got to the island he got us some free ... read more

After our jungle trekking in Bukit Lawang we came to Berastagi to chill out for a few days. It's a fairly large (population 600,000) city set among picturesque mountains. Everywhere we turn there is a peak of one mountain or another off in the distance. Similar to the mountains of Java, it seems like we are almost living in the clouds. With the higher altitude, the weather here is slightly cooler and we seem to still get rain most nights - we are beginning to think it's a Sumatran thing. However, most mornings we woke up to sunshine and had three near perfect days to wander around town. The first thing we wanted to see was the fruit market! It is only about a 10 minute walk from where we were staying so we checked that ... read more

As Rebecca's Grandad would say “Oooo Heck!”. Where to start with this one?! The beginning is usually the best place to start so we'll give that a shot... The last few days of our life have been like living in a David Attenborough documentary. We were in the jungle, surrounded by birds, insects, primates, fauna and flora etc. It has been absolutely unreal! Warning: The pictures we will show you and the blog we are about to share are not even going to come close to justifying what we experienced in the last few days! Our first night in Bukit Lawang we stayed at a guesthouse we had read nothing but rave reviews about, Greenhill. The reviews were all accurate; it was great! We had a private room pretty much directly in the jungle with a ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Medan August 13th 2012

Medan is the third largest city in Indonesia. It's dirty; It's noisy; It's polluted. We saw very healthy rats, we had a couple of cockroach friends in our room and there are beggars everywhere. It's a large Asian city... what else could you expect? Beyond these generalizations that many people avoid on their travels, we found a city that is sooo much more. Another thing you hear about is the constant “Hello Mister!” calls. We were expecting it to be hookers trying to see that my Tyler gets a happy ending but instead it was every child on the street, and they were saying it to Rebecca! We are back in an Indonesia that isn't quite used to seeing Caucasians. The kids that aren't brave enough to say “Hello” or “Good morning” tend to snicker in ... read more

So nice, they named it twice... okay not really, that's just me. But it was a fantastic little beach town that we could have definitely spent another day or two in. How many times have we said that? It is extremely hard to leave each of these gems we find along the way, but moving on to see more of them is just as exciting! Kuta, Lombok: surf town, friendly locals, weird sand. The sand was not tiny stones like we are used to in Canada, it wasn't powdery like the Gili's, it was more like little balls. Must have something to do with the coral reef that is about 300m from shore. We had one whole day in Kuta and we spent it walking around looking for a monkey forest. There are little kids everywhere ... read more

Day One We arrived on Gili T around 11:00am which meant we had most of the day to find out what this place is really about! Guess what... there are NO motorized vehicles. Just bikes and cidomo's. A cidomo is a horse drawn carriage and I don't think they are any better than motorcycles, they honk their horns but if you don't jump out of the way fast enough, you WILL get trampled. First thing we did was settle in at Rumah Hantu, a cute place we found. Tyler was sold as soon as he saw the hammock hanging in front of our room and heard eggs were included in the complementary breakfast. Then it was straight to the beach!! By that time it was midday so the beach was packed with people. We found a ... read more

It's been just over a full month since we got to Indonesia and there are a couple of milestones that should be acknowledged. Tyler has been travelling for about 32 days and has not had a single injury! Yay Tyler! This is definitely the longest either of us has been travelling. Every day going forward will be a new record for us and if our trip goes as planned we will have been away from home for over 240 days. (sorry for the reminder Mom, I love you – only like 200 more days until I book my flight home!) I cannot believe how much we have learned and accomplished already. We have climbed active volcanoes (as in more than one), partially learned a different language, witnessed once-in-a-lifetime sunrises and sunsets, walked on ancient bricks that ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Sengigi August 4th 2012

Senggigi: The main reason for our stop in Senggigi was to be close to Mataram but still also be close to a beach. Our visas were going to expire after 30 days so we needed to extend them in Mataram. Senggigi turned out to be a pretty great place (despite the unfortunate first impressions)! It's set in a nice bay away from the big waves with a view of Bali. The sun would set right over Bali just behind Gunung Agung (the largest volcano on Bali). We spent most evenings taking in the sunset on the beach :) The only downfall was that we had three days in Senggigi and two of them were spent going to Mataram. Getting to the immigration office was the easy part, we just chartered a bemo for a couple of ... read more

Yesterday, Tyler and I had to leave Nusa Lembongan to move on to our next destination, the island of Lombok. I'm going to give you the most accurate description I can of the looooooong day we just had. There are so many amazing things you get to do when you travel, but I wanted to tell you about this experience to show you that our trip isn't all beaches and sunny days. Some days aren't the most pleasant... First I will tell you our plan – boat from Lembongan to Sanur, bus from Sanur to Padangbai, ferry from Padangbai to Senggigi, find a place to stay. Busy but doable!! For days we had been watching people leave Lembongan thinking “those poor suckers” but that day had now dreadfully come for us :( we said goodbye to ... read more
