This the day of the elephant round up. This morning, a large crowd is gathering to the stadium. There were a lot of explanation that I could follow thanks to a system of simultaneous translation. I won't bother you with that. Just look at the pictures and imagine how impressive it is in real.... read more

Sunday November, 18th 2007 Sunday at 5:30 A.M. is the day the elephant semi-marathon. So, Martin (the guy I met at Nang Rong) and I were quite excited to see a herd elephants running at full speed. So, I try to wake up early to be on time for this terrific event. When the alarm-clock rang, I fel back to sleep. I woke up at 5:15 and I walk and run for one hour to reach the outskirt of the city where the competition was taking place. There were no cyclo or moto-taxi that early Sunday morning. I was angry that I was late. Then, I finally arrived and that's what I saw. I looked at the leaflet : Elephant town semi-marathon. It means Surin semi marathon. I had to laugh my head off; such a ... read more

Thursday November, 15th 2007 Tonight is the contest of the best elephant feeding carriage. Institutions in Surin have decorated carriages with food for the elephants and young people in traditional costumes present the carriage or danse. It's a nice atmosphere though I sometimes feel a bit alone in the crowd. Later, there was a large performance of traditional danse and music starting with Apsara dancing (no picture of Apsara as the crowd was so dense that I could not take a picture that was worth the place on the computer). Friday November, 16th 2007 Elephant feeding. All the huge amount of fruits, vegetables, sugar canes, sweet potatoes that were there yesterday are to be eaten by hundreds of elephants. As we just sit behind the food stalls, it is possible to touch the trump of the ... read more

Thursday November, 15th 2007 I'm leaving Nang Rong. I liked that city : its quietness, the small restaurant, the papaya salad, my comfortable room at Honey Inn... Just before I left, I met an old man who makes a king of traditional instrument. It's a pity, I didn't meet him earlier. He would have shown me more of that quarter of Nang Rong and other traditional instruments. ... read more

Tuesday November, 13th 2007 After my too wet journey by motorbike, I decided to share a car with Martin, a Dutch tourist to visit temples in the surroundings. For temples, pictures speak by themselves, so why should I write more ? First Phanom Rung (meaning the big hill), a very well preserved khmer temple. With a lot of nice stone carving. Then, Prasat Meuang Tam. That was my favourite temple of the day. Prasat Tamuen, a group of 3 temples at the Cambodian border. Actually, the last temple is on Cambodian territory. From the jungle, there were a lot of Cambodian people coming on foot to sell goods to Thailand. Just, near the temple was a custom officer who collected tax based on the evaluation of the value and weigh of the goods. All subject to ... read more

Saturday November, 10th 2007 The good thing in Nang Rong itself is that there is nothing to do. So, I can walk around with no aim and I just let the images, sounds, smells and feelings come to me. There seems to be different quarters in this small city. South to highway 24, there is the bus station. All the shops concentrate around that place. Next to it, but not connected by any street, there is a residential area that can only be reached by the highway. North of the highway, there is a quarter that look more popular though some house are really nice and large. That’s where I walked today. There is also a small health centre where lots of mums were bringing their children to be weighted. The whole city have real atmosphere ... read more

Monday November, 5th 2007 With the departure of Jan and nothing planned for the day, I have the feeling that my time off is really starting to day. The weather is quite nice : sunny and not too hot. I'm filling up my blog text to start the day. Then, I started to put things on the agenda (in the latin meaning of the word : the things that ought to be done) : laundry, tourist information, a bit of meditation, some Taijiquan practice, writing my blog, a good nap in the afternoon going to the Internet café, a hair cut... Well, quite a lot for a day at doing nothing. I feel happy of my first resting day though not everything is done. In particular, as my memory stick broke down, I was unable to ... read more

Saturday November, 3rd 2007 I'm leaving Bangkok for Nakhon Ratchasima. The train in second class is quite comfortable. I decide to stay at Doctor's guesthouse. The room is quite large. The bathroom is in need of cleaning and refreshing but I definitely like the quietness of the place. For those interested, there is not often an answer at the phone number mentioned in the lonely planet and the cell phone of the manager is 085-632.33.96 I spent the evening walking downtown with Jan, a German student met on the train. Sunday November, 4th 2007 This was a busy visiting day going around Nakhon Ratchasima. First the small temple of Prasat Phanomwan. Then, the archaeological site of Ban Prasat and finally Phimay with its huge banyan tree and its temple. ... read more
