Thursday January, 17th 2008 Today, I'm going by boat to Nong Kiew. Though the evenings in Luang Prabang were great meeting other travelers, I'm feeling a bit down. A quiet journey by boat along the Nam Ou is what I need to reload my batteries and recover my energy. The mountainous landscape around us is amazingly beautiful and I'm spending the 8-hour journey looking at it. We are on a small boat that can accommodate between 10 and 15 people. Nevertheless, soon after we have left the Mekong river and enter the Nam Ou, we have to disembark and walk 800m because the river is too shallow for the boat to go though with all the passengers. There are numerous rapids on the river Ou and going through them with a small boat is much more ... read more

Tuesday January, 8th 2008 First plan was to go for a home stay in a village 20 km south from Luang Nam Tha but I thought better to complete my blogs and answer to some mails and enjoy the comfort of my guest house. Tomorrow, I definitely go to Ban Chaleunsouk (ban just mean village or municipality). ... read more

J’allais donc pouvoir me fatiguer physiquement.

... read more

Thursday January, 3rd 2008 I’m taking the bus to Luang Nam Tha, west to Udomxai. There was a bus at 8am but I did want to do the trip in the fog. So, I had a good reason to wake up late and take the bus at 9:30. At 9:30, there is still plenty of mist, but never mind, the bus is not full so we wait till it’s full at 10:30. There is no mist anymore and I can enjoy the landscape. The bus is full but it’s still stop downtown twice to take some passengers. There is something, I don’t understand about bus stop. The bus station is always far away from the city center. In Luang Nam Tha, it’s really in the middle of nowhere. It’s in theory forbidden to take it anywhere ... read more

Tuesday January, 1st 2008 At 4 AM, the monks are waking up at the sound of the gong. At 6 AM, I woke up again at the sound of the monks chanting on their way to collect alms. Half asleep, I want to go and see what happens but as the guest house's door is locked, I comfortably get back to my bed. I've decided to move away from Luang Prabang and come back when prices has dropped back to normal. I'm heading to Udomxai. The small bus goes on small, sometimes bumpy mountain road and the landscape is once again amazing. On the bus are mainly locals and a group of Christian Americans. They go to visit a project they have in Udomxai province and estimates needs. At Udomxai, the weather is cloudy and very ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang December 31st 2007

Monday December, 31th 2007 The journey goes on. All the passengers that go to Luang Prabang are squeezed in a smaller boat than yesterday. The wooden bench are closer than before but the scenery is as good as yesterday. We travel from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM with just a few short stops to drop off some local passengers or take on some other at villages along the way. At Luang Prabang, everybody goes around to get an accommodation. Most guest houses are full and the prices are rocketing. Rooms that are normally in 5 to 7 $ range cost between 15 and 40 $. I was looking for accommodation with an American met on the boat, but we lost sight of each other in the process. I'm ending up in an average guest house far ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang December 30th 2007

Sunday December, 30th 2007 After many hesitations, I've chosen to take the boat to Luang Prabang. It's a 2-day journey on the Mekong river. The boat is slowly starting to fill up. Some slightly too large wooden benches are hastily replaced by smaller ones to accommodate (or rather pack up) more passengers. The diversity of the passengers is amazing: an old French couple, an Australian family, local people carrying large bags, the serb couple who were at the guest house, a girl with a lot of piercing, tattoos on her thighs and a larger tattoo going down from her shoulders to her breasts (je suppose que comme les poils verts des “bancs publics” de Brassens (version étudiante), ils sont là sans doute pour ajouter de la couleur à ce qui fait notre bonheur), a group of ... read more
