So it is pointless to go to the Bay of Islands and not spend some time on the water so we booked ourselves on a boat tour with Fullers to the hole in the rock. After a filling breakfast at our B&B we headed down into Russell to wait at the pier for our boat. You have to check in at the Fuller's office first to get your proper tickets. The weather looked a bit iffy but thankfully the tour goes out in pretty much most weather and coming from Scotland we had seen worse anyway. The sun did try to shine in the beginning but it did not last but that was not to spoil a beautiful day on the water. The highlight of course is seeing the dolphins! Everyone on the boat goes a ... read more

So after a successful day yesterday we are up early to make our way slowly to the Bay of Islands, final destination Russell. We decided to check out the Karikari peninsula and my guide tells me that Maitia Bay is the best destination. It is reached after a short stretch along a gravel road and through a camp site. I must be honest that my husband was not blown away by this cove but I thought it was all picturesque and we went for a short walk along it. Not as dramatic and grand and sweeping as some of the others we have seen may account for the first impression. We had a conversation as we walked actually of how we would rate NZ beaches from the best we have seen so far and had to ... read more

So today is the day we have booked our bus tour to Cape Reinga. Again the sun is shining and as the lady at reception said this is a good day for it! We booked our tour with Harrisons and met the bus in Kaitaia at 8.45 am for a 9am start. Seeing Kaitaia made me feel good about our choice to stay in Ahipara. While Kaitaia was pretty much a town, granted it had a lot more shops and cafe's to offer, Ahipara was the more scenic choice with the beach right outside your front door. We stopped for a pancake breakfast in Kaitaia which was a pretty yummy start to the day. It was a very cheery welcome at reception and they were busy getting the bus ready. After a quick stop in town ... read more

Planning Finally a proper trip for a whole four days! As I say I have been working and as with casual work it's usally on the weekends but there it was a whole weekend off, well I had to cancel one shift to make it a long weekend. Of course the planning then had to be quick and that to be honest usually stresses me out. I had recently officially bought a car to get me to and from work so travel itself was not the problem. We decided to do two nights, Thursday and Friday, in a place which gave us access to Cape Reinga and then one night in the Bay of Islands. Our Lonely planet guide recommended a hostel in Ahipara, reviews on line looked good and they had a double room available ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » North Shore January 5th 2010

So after two weeks I found a job in Auckland. Just casual work to help pay the bills and fund the holiday activities. Won't really be reviewing that side of my life here. It is working with children and twice we went to Long Bay and twice I never got to see the beach, curiosity was getting the better of me. Long Bay is only 30 minutes from Auckland and be warned it is a very popular beach and gets NZs version of crowded. We had to drive all the way to the end to find a parking space but we came in the afternoon after lunch and still found space to park so I think that is pretty impressive. It was a sunny Sunday so we were not that surprised. I am sorry but I ... read more

So seriously come all the way to New Zealand at first opportunity head to the beach! I mean it is the stuff you see on TV right. How many programmes have I watched of families from the UK wanting to come to NZ and seeing them on these beautiful beaches never imagining I could one day be there...well here I am! We wake up relatively early and pack our version of a picnic and off we go.... Our first stop is the Arataki Visitor Centre for a quick introduction to the park, starting with a man made huge wooden photo-frame with an amazing view in the background, well that is the best way I can describe it anyway. It was interesting to get a bit of history of the area and there were some small walks ... read more

What a pleasurable day out we had! Especially now that I have discovered another great space I can go and read my book! We spent the day close to home at the Parnell Festival of Roses. It runs over two days at the end of October. Only a short walk away from where we are staying is Parnell Rose Garden's so this was a great opportunity to go and check it out when all the roses are in bloom. There was entertainment along Parnell road and all the shops were involved. There was a farmer's market as well but unfortunately we woke up a bit too late and missed it. We went for a short walk up Parnell Road but to be honest it was not that different from most times except that the shops had ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Central December 31st 2009

Does everyone wonder when writing these blogs if everyone is reading them? I somehow feel that I need to justify this particular entry as I kind of worry that maybe it is not the activity that people will often talk about doing. I do wonder what the expectations are. I mean who cares about a lowly city walk, especially when the guide explains that the city can appear grim and generic. Yet for me anything new is interesting and you should try to find out the similarities and differences, after all I am technically living here. Anyway I am in a way being totally selfish and doing this for me so that I can read back and remember what I have done and all my experiences even the little ones and yeah if they ain't interested ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Rangitoto December 30th 2009

Rangitoto another small island a short ferry ride from downtown Auckland. It is actually the largest and youngest volcanic crater in the Auckland volcanic field and there is no doubting that once you arrive as that is what the atmosphere is about hot, dry and empty. I recommend wearing at least trainers and you have to bring your own water and food. The walking is not particularly strenuous but you want to be comfortable. There are also lava caves to explore so if you are up for that bring a flash light. We decided to take the early morning ferry as it was a sunny day and we had a feeling it might get busy. We were pretty right as lots of people had the same idea as us! The ferry's though are pretty big and ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Waiheke Island December 30th 2009

Well our first small jaunt which got us out of Parnell and the City took us to Waiheke Island, a comfortable 35 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. My husband works with a professor who lives on the Island and he invited us for the day. We went late afternoon and did not know really what the plan for the afternoon was, unfortunately I did not take my camera as we were given a small but lovely tour of the island. We first went to the small community art gallery, small but pleasurable as it was exhibits from local artists and probably something we would not have done had we gone there just ourselves. The main aim for those visiting Waiheke appear to be * Beach * Wine * Restaurants Which of course is fair enough ... read more
