Patong is night and day different from my last stay. Some call this place “Little Bangkok,” because it has many of the same qualities. Last night I made my way down to Bangla Road. The street closes to all traffic and is open for walking/stumbling around. Bangla Road is famous for its nightlife, it is a place one can go all out if you’re looking to party. You can find all kinds of entertainment, from girls to beers to live music. One thing you can’t do is walk without being pestered. There are vendors everywhere, selling trinkets, food, cigarettes, and I am sure there is harder stuff to. Girl are dancing around poles, engaging in banter, and trying to coax customers to play simple bar games like "Connect" or "Hammer the nail.“ The music as you ... read more

I rescued a girl from the sea today, and saved her life I would venture to say. I normally lead off from where I left off the day before, but I feel this story is worthy of leading this post. A bit of back story before I get started; just incase you don’t know me all that well. I swim like a goddamn maniac. Ever since I was young I spent my life in the pool, I did swim team, and life guarded from the age of sixteen to twenty two. (Sub-back story: Not to sound like I am stereotyping, but I have found, in my experience on this trip, that the Japanese and Chinese are not very strong swimmers.) We arrive at Bamboo Island and I am walking to the marked off snorkel area with ... read more

Well, after I had finished uploading everything last night I headed off to Sunset Bar to watch the sunset. The view is incredible, there is a steep drop off from a hilltop where waves crash onto the rocks below. There were a few clouds that were obstructing the view a bit, magical none the less. As tables filled up I offered the bench across from me to a couple from Austria who are here honeymooning. Well after sunset I wandered back down the hill, showered and headed off to find dinner. There is a server girl at Sawadee Restaurant who rushes out to see me every time I pass. Her name is Bamboo and she came to work here from a village near Bangkok where her family has owned a chicken farm for years. She said ... read more

While sitting here blogging yesterday two beautiful Aussie girls, Kirsty and Sophie, sat down next to me. We struck up conversation and I found out the two are on holiday and have been so since July. They told me all about their adventures, what they saw, where they stayed. Kirsty told me about Blue Grotto in Southern Italy, the place sounds amazing. I asked them if they had Limoncello, and we shared stories about that. They were nice enough to join me for dinner; so I dined with two gorgeous Australian girls on the ocean front sharing stories of travel over amazing Thai food and we each had a Red Bull vodka. Red Bull syrup is much different than what we have in the States and is banned in some countries. Kirsty and I lied to ... read more

Last night was Friday and I took it pretty easy after my adventurous day and knowing that I was doing two dives today. I dinner right next to water, actually shortly after I left my spot was in the water. I had my favorite Thai soup of chicken, coconut milk and different Thai herbs. I know I know, I should be eating seafood here, and I have been, it is okay to divert once or twice I think. I met my first American at dinner also. Larissa and her husband Hedrick are here on holiday as well. They both live in NYC now, Hedrick is originally from Sweden. It was nice to talk with a couple on familiar things. After dinner I walked down to a bar, really just a hut that serves Mai Tai’s and ... read more

Absolute paradise. That really about covers it. Last night I stayed on my side of the island and took in some of the local Thai flare. I ate fish pulled from the sea that day and listened to some really bad karaoke; they love their karaoke over here. I guess I fit in okay, I really wish it were a little more modern though… oh well, it was very entertaining. I called it an early night after I had worked out a deal with one of the local long tail taxi drivers, Reem. Reem and I left Phi Phi Don about 6:15 this morning. I wanted to go to Maya Bay before its beauty was tainted by all of the tourists and speed boats that come from Krabi and Phuket. We pulled away as the sun ... read more

Phi Phi Islands are amazing. I just arrived in my bungalow here on Koh Phi Phi Don, that means big island. (see video) Early this morning I woke up and toured the market in Phuket town, (see video) before the boat tour started. The tour was amazing. I have never seen anything like it. Limestone rock juts straight from the emerald waters of the Andaman sea towards the sky. Our first stop was to Phi Phi Lae, which means small island. The boat first stopped at Viking Cave where locals risk their lives to harvest bird nests. The nests are made into a soup, on nest can fetch a daring entrepreneur nearly 200,000 baht. The tour then carried us into one of Lae’s bays. We jumped off the boat and into the waters where one, during ... read more

Welcome to Phuket, Thailand. I walked around near my hotel today and found a super market and bought some bottled water. I explored their market/mall for a bit. I decided not to purchase any souveniers yet as I would have to lug them along the rest of my trip. Tonight I made some friends at Michael’s bar. Two of the staff , Suzie and Dul, spoke very good English and taught me a few things in Thai. I met a waitress, Ja-o, and the owner’s wife. We’ll call her the owner’s wife. After having a few beers with my new friends in Phuket Suzie, the chef, made me a very spicy but excellent dish. I left around 1:00 am and headed back to the hotel on foot. This sounded like a great idea, it didn’t seen ... read more

Twenty hours on a plane is not sounding so appealing right now, I am so ready to just be there. I had forgot what a pain LAX can be. For reading material on the flight from Omaha to LA I decided to bring "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. I have read it before and thought it fitting for my trip. A great story that talks about Santiago's journey, his Personal Legend. Santiago believes his Personal Legend to be a search for treasure. What he finds is that the adventures are the spoils. He finds magic and treasure at his own doorstep and inside of himself.... he finds that life is the journey. "The boy felt jealous of the freedom of the wind, and saw that he could have the same freedom. There was nothing to hold ... read more
