The only thing I had planned for our last full day in Costa Rica was driving to San Jose to stay the night before the early flight home. When I woke up I was anxious to do something. Poor Sophie… she never really had any time to relax. She is a great sport though and was completely on board with driving down to Manuel Antonio and give it another try. Excited to get going we hustled through breakfast and back to the room to pack our things. With all of the souvenirs I was surprise that I was able to zip up my suitcase, I only take a carryon refusing to check a bag. We loaded up our suitcases into the SUV, checked out and were on our way. The first stop was at the River ... read more

November of this past year I spent a week on a catamaran exploring French Polynesia: Bora Bora, Raiatea, Huahine, Maupiti, and spent a few days on Moorea and Tahiti. (Read all about it on this site, you’ll need to go back a few pages.) When I saw that there was a day excursion to Tortuga Island by catamaran I was 100% on board. Our day started about 6:30, packing and heading to breakfast before boarding a bus that took us into Puntarenas. We didn’t know that they would have breakfast here for us. Oh well, we sat outside and did a little people watching while waiting to embark on our one day ... read more

I woke up around 5:15 am and went out to see the volcano and see what I might be able to shoot, I love the first light in the morning it is so soft and provides interesting contrast. When I found that the volcano was virtually cloud free I asked Sophie if she wanted to go for a drive. “Sure.” She jumped up and started getting ready. Tripod in hand we were on our way before 5:30 am. Alvaro had asked what time we would like to take breakfast the day before, so we had a breakfast date at 8:00, two and a half hours to explore. We drove around the volcano, ... read more

Puntarenas is in the upper middle section of the central Pacific coast; in the center of many things, but a drive to get anywhere. As I was researching things to do in Costa Rica I decided that the two and a half hour drive to Arenal may not be worth it if we didn’t stay a night. So that is what I decided to do, I actually found a really cool tree house style hotel, unfortunately they were booked up. I decided on a place called Racho Cerra Azul in La Fortuna. I chose this place because I was looking for something a little different. We were doing the resort thing already and I wanted a change of pace. This place had great reviews on TripAdvisor and looked perfect. Little cabins with few amenities. A mile ... read more

Today we woke up at 6:00 am for an 8:00 am departure to Monteverde cloud forest. After packing our bug-spray and rain gear we laced up our hiking shoes, I grabbed my backpack, and we headed off to breakfast. At 8:00 we were picked up by Juan and Alberto from Odyssey tours, once in the van we were on our way for the two hour drive up Monteverde. Juan told a few jokes while giving us some of the history about the cloud forest and telling us some of the differences between a cloud forest and the rainforest. The temperature dropped as we climbed the 4,600 feet to Monteverde, both guides were on the lookout for toucans, monkeys, and other local wildlife. It ... read more

We decided that sleeping in a bit wouldn’t be a bad way to start off our first full day in Costa Rica. Breakfast in the restaurant was full of choices, and both of us ate way too much again. With our stomachs full we packed for a day trip down to Manuel Antonio, a national park along the Pacific coast. We made our first stop in a town called Jaco, where we bought some bug-spray and for Soph to grab a coffee. After a brief walk up and down the street we were back on our way. It was well after noon when we found a taqueria near the park called Sancho’s ... read more

The flight into Costa Rica was gorgeous. We flew in from the Pacific side so we were able to get a look at Puntarenas, a five mile long peninsula on the west coast, which would serve as our home base for a week. Looking down all we could see was green. Lush green forest covering mountains and plains that were crisscrossed with rivers, I couldn’t wait to get in the car and be on our way. A lot of things I read before I went warned against renting a car, warning that there are few signs, huge pot holes, and very rough driving conditions. Good thing I am not a ... read more

To start out day three we decided to rent some beach cruisers and pedal our way down to Venice Beach. So after renting our bikes we rode down to Santa Monica pier and onto the bike path. Right away we were met by Muscle Beach, an adult playground of sorts with chin up bars, rings, monkey bars, ropes and the like. I have been watching American Ninja Warrior and have seen a few of the contestant’s videos shot here. I decided to climb the rope real quick and have a look around at some of the other equipment. I would love to spend a few hours working out at a place like this every week. Too bad Omaha doesn’t have anything like it, ... read more

We took breakfast in some tiny hip little shop in Santa Monica. Before hopping onto the Star City Tours hop on hop off double-decker red bus. I let Sophie know that she was to set the itinerary, she assured me that this was the best way to see the city. She had been to the US as a young girl, but this was her first time really exploring LA. I’ll admit that I had not seen many of the things that we saw before this excursion, even though I have been to Los Angeles multiple occasions. Our tour started off in Santa Monica, the line we were on made a loop through ... read more

On this trip you will notice that I have a travel companion. I met Sophie, from Australia, while on Phi Phi Island, Thailand. (http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Thailand/South-West-Thailand/Ko-Phi-Phi-Don/blog-446522.html) After two years apart Sophie and I agreed that it was time to meet up on another adventure. The plan back in December was to head to Egypt, see the pyramids, take a cruise up the Nile, stay nights in Giza, Aswan, Luxor and Cairo. In December the elections were going to be held in March, in March the elections were pushed back to May. May 23rd and 24th to be exact. Our plans were to arrive in Cairo on May 24th. The beginning of May there were violent protests surrounding the elections, 12 killed and over 200 injured. I decided that Egypt was not the optimal travel destination. So we worked ... read more
