White Pocket was a suggestion given to me by an avid area hiker. I have never seen it on any map and it is pretty tough to find any information on it online. The weather here is getting pretty crappy and there is snow predicted for this afternoon and into tomorrow; chances are good that I am not going to be hiking to the Wave. Could this be the next best thing? After the hike up Angels Landing I didn’t have much to lose, I’d already done something pretty amazing with my day. Plus this guy had told me that he likes this one better than the Wave, that was right before he gave me the directions. Which went something like this: “Take that same Houserock Valley Road past the Wirepass Trailhead stop, and look for ... read more

Four months ago I put my name in for the lottery to hike “The Wave”, (I’ll tell you more about this on that post). Anyway, one of the three dates I submitted were picked and I secured my place. Yesterday I flew into St. George, Utah, rented a Jeep and made my way east through Zion National Park. The entrance fee for the park is $25, the sights seen are well worth the price of admission. I was planning on just driving through this park making my way to Kanab, UT where I am based out of for the next two days. The scenic drive is incredible, words can’t do it justice. I ended up making several stops to pull off and take photos. The winding road and awe inspiring scenery forces one to keep their ... read more

Today is our last day on Oahu. : ( We did get plenty of sleep though and were ready to make the most of our last day. Our morning started just before sunrise, as we wanted to see it one last time before we left, after that we changed and headed out to hike up to Makapu'u lighthouse. The hike is more of just a walk as the path is a paved service road, it was about a mile to a scenic point, a mile filled with stellar views of Koko Head, Hanauma Bay, and blue whales which migrate through in the winter. Check out was supposed to be completed by 10:00 am so we hustled back to pack up and head off on our way. We stopped at the post office to purchase one ... read more

Today is our second to last day and our last full day here on Oahu. I had received a call from Aaron's dive shop letting me know that do to the ocean current visibility was not that great for the dives I was looking to do on Tuesday, I switched the dives around and would now be diving on Wednesday, today. It was an early morning. I had to be at the dive shop at 5:45 am. Kim woke up with me and dropped me off at the shop, she was going to come later and finish her open water certification. These morning dives were deeper and more technical, unfortunately she couldn't come. Something I really wanted to do this trip was to do a wreck dive, with all of the history here, especially surrounding WWII ... read more

What is one thing I had to do while in Hawaii? Surf. Today we woke up early and drove around to North Shore to have a go at surfing. I have attempted to go surfing a handful of times and because of different circumstances ranging from the owner of the boards partying too hard to low surf. Luckily for us we didn't have either issue this time. On the drive over we hooked up with Surf Hawaii, after making payment via Paypal all we had to do meet up with the van in Haleiwa. We had about an hour once arriving in Haleiwa so we walked around and did a bit of shopping. Things were a little busier than normal in the area as Volcom's Pipe Masters was going on, pretty cool, and it was streaming ... read more

January 24th was a big day in history, it is the day of my birth. I decided to do something big this year. On Wednesday January 20th I completed all requirements to be certified as a private pilot, single engine land. Today I rented a plane on Oahu and Kim and I flew around the island. The day started out a little more leisurely than the our previous days, we slept in until about 8 am. I had a bit of flight planning to do so I to started that while enjoying a cup of tea and listing to the ocean through the open windows and sliding door. The plane was scheduled for 11:00 am so we took off for Honolulu airport about 10:15. Once there we finished all of the necessary paperwork and headed out ... read more

Dustin, Kim and I woke up early on Sunday morning, well before sunrise, to hike Olomana Trail. The trail was pretty intense, especially considering I was backpacking with about 20lbs of gear, luckily Dustin was there to switch off with. The trail is steep, crazy steep, over a 1,600 foot elevation gain in under a mile. The first part is a pretty gradual increase, but by the end there are rock walls with rope assists, it morphs from a hike to a climb in quite a few spots. The trade off is that the views were spectacular, scrambling up boulders, full on climbing up a sheer rock face, deadly drops on either side off a path only a foot wide, it was all worth it to see the top of this ridge. We took a much ... read more

Day three started out the same as day two, we woke up early to watch the sunrise from the beach; Kim ran a bit while I sat and enjoyed a cup of tea. Kim has been working on getting scuba certified and this will be her first open water dive. We dove with Aaron’s dive shop out of Kailua. (Things are going well with them so far, I’ll fill in more after our second set of dives on Tuesday.) We checked in early for the dive, filled out the proper paper work and then hopped in the van with Mel and Jeff to catch the boat, Nacho, to our dive location. The swells were pretty big for our dive and we were expecting pretty crappy visibility, I was going to be diving with three divers who ... read more

Leaving Omaha’s five inches of snow kicked this trip off in the perfect way; increasing the anticipation of Hawaii, and more importantly the weather, ten fold. This trip is kind of a big deal for me as I am traveling with my girlfriend of six months Kim. She is active and has an adventurous side so I am excited to see how this week plays out. Kim and I left the house at four thirty in the morning, threw our bags into the cab and took off for the airport. Au revoir snow. The plane ride was fine, the distance was nothing compared to the flights to Thailand. The only irritating thing was that the plane was full of blue hairs who were wide awake and chatting like it was social hour throughout the leg to ... read more

I have seen the Cordovas more times this year than the majority of my friends who live in Omaha, but when my parents told me they had a condo for this past weekend the first thing I did was check in with Erin and Steve to see what they were doing. Once they let me know that they were down I decided that I was going to fly out on Thursday and then drive up to the mountains on Friday. Outside of the Cordovas there were two other people who live in Denver that I wanted to meet up with. The first, Sara, lived in Thailand while I was there. She is the one who inspired me to start blogging. (http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Sara-G/) I had been doing research for things to see and do while in Thailand, ... read more
