It's been a bit quiet around here the past few days so not much to report until today except that I realized another odd thing about Australia while I was out for a jog this morning. The mailboxes are set into the front fenceline of all the houses (there isn't a house I have seen that does not have a fence around it) and the fence lines are set back from the road about 3 to 4 meters, so a mail truck can't just pull up and deposit the mail. Instead what I witnessed was a man on a very unofficial looking motor bike just pull up onto the grass in front of peoples houses and pull mail out of his pouches on the side of his bike. It is funny to just watch a guy ... read more

Another beautiful 80 degree day here in Townsville.  Heather says I am looking a bit tan! Which is quite a shocker since I never tan.  As much as I love the sun and the heat that comes with it, I can honestly say I have never been so happy to see clouds in my life.  The sun in the Tropics is just brutal and almost everyone wears a hat and/or sits under an umbrella if a pinch of shade cannot be found.   Today we are headed to the Billabong! From what the kids are telling me between squeals of excitement is that we all can get a chance to hold a Koala, Wombat (they say he is reallllll heavy :), and a Crocodile! You bet that I packed my camera (and one of these days ... read more

G'Day! I am getting my Australian lingo down a bit more with the more I talk to the natives and it hasn't hurt that Heather left a Australian slang book on my night stand ;) I am just going to put on my thongs and togs and take the eskie down to the billabong. Translated as I am going to put on my flip flops and bathing suit and take the cooler down to the estuary type thing. Speaking of billabongs, the kids can't wait to take me to the closest one. I believe we are going on Monday and while we are there we get to hold a Koala! Now, you have to be a certain height since Koalas do not like to be in what they feel like would be a bush, but if ... read more

Today was wonderful, for one I slept until 6 a.m, then I took the phone and walked outside in a tank top and shorts and called my Mom and the weather was perfect. Heather opens up all of the doors in the house to let the fresh air in first thing in the morning and it is quite something to just walk in and out of the house and on the veranda and not have to open any doors. Since Simon had to work Heather, the kids, and I hung out for most of the day. So we started off the day by going to one of Townsville's shopping centers. Now Australia wants everyone to stay in one place to shop so they put their grocery stores in their Mall. So you can buy your groceries ... read more

Heather and Simon had to work and the kids were still in school (their last day before Easter holiday) so Heather dropped me off at The Strand where I spent 6 hours laying on the beach and swimming.  It is a beautiful strip of beach in Townsville that th community had turned from a simple walking path into a beautiful place to play, walk, run, and swim. It has lots of open grassy parts as well where they hold concerts and events.  Since we are in the tropics there are a few rules to be learned, some of which the hard way. I had known from being on vacation with college friends that the sun is stronger and you need to apply a lot of sunscreen and often (my good friend Tiffany had the fairest skin ... read more

I landed in Townsville at 6 p.m,  my body really thought it was 6 a.m with the time change  but I didn't feel too bad!  Heather, Simon, and their two adorable kids Max and Emily all met me at the airport! I have not seen Heather and Simon since I was 12 back before they had children.  I couldn't stop thanking them for this wonderful opportunity and to let me know what I could do for them.  Heather and the kids had to leave since both kids were selected to play in a concert that night, and once I got my bags Simon and I were off to the concert as well.   Max, 8, was playing in his first concert and he had a solo! He plays the cello and I had a great time ... read more

Oceans and Seas April 14th 2011

Well it's technically 3 p.m eastern on April 12 but here in Auckland, NZ it's 7 a.m on April 13th.  Just finished my 14 hour flight from LAX and it wasn't so bad!  I flew New Zealand Air and it is a wonderful airline.  Their video at the start of the flight that tells you where the exits are and what to do in case of emergency was hilarious!  They had a puppet who kept getting the wording wrong so the flight attendants in the video had to keep repeating themselves. Plus everyone was so happy in the video :) We were served dinner and breakfast and there was enough room on the flight that a lot of people could lay down across 3 seats.  At the end of the flight the attendants went around handing out ... read more

We got up and started packing for our onward journeys. Mine to Australia, and Mom's back to Richmond, Virginia. I had brought a few extra items with me for the California part of the trip that Mom would take back with her.  When she got to the airport to check her bag it was 4 lbs over.  The attendant said that of she just took one or two things out it would be fine.  Mom said she didn't mind paying for the extra weight, that was until the attendant told her it would be $90, Mom promptly redistributed things from her checked to her carry on.   Before we arrived at the airport (both of our flights weren't till after 10 p.m) we rode into Los Angeles and walked down and looked at all of the ... read more

Sadly it is our last full day and night here in California, we spent most of it on the road driving up from San Diego and are staying in Santa Monica. Once we arrived we still had some daylight so we walked down to the very busy Santa Monica Pier. This is the first beach we have really been on since arriving in CA! It is so interesting to see a huge sandy beach but then have picturesque mountains lining the background, it is so different from the east coast. We walked around on the boardwalk and down onto the beach, and then went to scout out some grub. We found a nice little Gastropub in down town Santa Monica where we had one of the best meals we have had and we did it up ... read more

San Diego! 37 miles from Mexico.  We got to the zoo in the morning right when before it opened which was great since we got our choice of where we wanted to go first. We decided to go and see the first demonstration of the morning which was seeing the elephants getting their daily foot scrub. It was fascinating to see how the trainers had taught the animals to pick their feet up and stick it through a hole in their enclosure. Basically the elephants come into a giant system of hydraulic doors, where they are separated from their keepers, and from the outside the keepers tell the elephants what to do, literally they say "Cha Cha other foot" or "Cha cha move over a little more" and they do it. It is all by positive ... read more
