While I managed to write nearly every day after hiking an average of 10+ miles, I couldn't find the time once I left the countryside trails for the world of sightseeing in a city. I was happy that at least there was the transition of two days in the the much smaller city of York before arriving in London for an additional two days. York is a walled, medieval city that is best known for having one of the oldest and largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe (York Minster). We did a free walking tour of the city on our one full day and some of us went to the Evensong service at the Minster. We heard wonderful music from a visiting choir....amazing acoustics! The guide told us an interesting story about why the York Minster is ... read more

it felt rather odd today to get up and not put on hiking boots and head East! i still managed to walk 8 miles exploring York but it definitely wasn't a hike! I do want to catch up in the last two days of the Coast to Coast. We left our wonderful farm on Friday morning in the misty rain. We were hopeful that the heavy rain was ending and most of us shed our rain pants in the first hour when we were walking through a beautiful wooded area. This path ended at a lovely waterfall with an outdoor tearoom where we had tea and other goodies. It didn't matter that we had just had a full English breakfast just two hours earlier! Unfortunately, our hopes of improving weather were dashed as we headed into ... read more

The Internet shut down last night just as I was finishing my blog for the day....and it appears it wasn't saved. I don't want to skip writing about our last full day of hiking but I'm much more focused right now on the excitement of reaching Robin Hoods Bay. Pictures will come later....some have already been posted on Facebook when I had internet access in a coffee shop in Robin Hoods Bay. All 5 of us feel quite proud of our accomplishment. We all arrived in fine shape with only minor foot pain. Only one of our group had to take two days off walking and that was because of a muscle injury incurred the week before the trip. Everyone else walked every step of the way! My total mileage for the 20 days according to ... read more

For the first time, Internet was so poor last night that I wasn't able to write. We were staying on a farm outside the village of Glaisdale and Internet was only sporadic. We had another relatively short and easy walk across the heather covered moors. We arrived in the small village of Glaisdale too early to go to the farm so we thought we'd walk to the next town and take the bus back. Someone directed us to the path but it turned out to be the wrong direction. We ended up back at the only pub in town when we realized we were headed the wrong way. We saw the guy who sent us and he apologized saying he thought we were doing the coast to coast from East to West. We decided just to ... read more

Today was the shortest distance and easiest walking since we began our trek. We began with a fairly steep climb to the highest moor and then walked along the high moors for the next 8 miles along very a very easy and clear path. We were still joined with the Cleveland Way for the first half, and then that path split off. While we were again walking along vast expanses of heather, there were plenty of new and interesting scenery. The colors of the fields were largely dominated by the purple heather, but there were areas where many other colors mixed with different plants and wild flowers. The views on each side varied, with the most impressive views being of the valleys below the moors. We had a wonderful encounter with a man who came down ... read more

We were all a bit sad to leave our B&B this morning....while all have been wonderful and each unique in its own way, Park House was extra special. The setting and rooms were beautiful, both the dinner and the breakfast were exceptionally good and we enjoyed talking with the proprietor and the 4 other guests. Today was another great hike. We are now in the North Moors National Park and today's hike was mostly on the same path as the Cleveland Way (Another well-known long distance path in England) We went up and down all day crossing over several high moors, the total ascent today was over 3000 ft.with comparable descent! It was definitely a "roller coaster" hike. The most exciting part of today was seeing all the heather....it is just beginning to turn the hillsides ... read more

After two map and compass classes and two weeks of walking, I am finally feeling today that I'm figuring out how to actually use the map and compass! Of course, now that I think I've figured it out, the trails are becoming much better marked and there are still others that probably are better than I am.....but it's probably a good skill for me to have learned. Today's hIke was only 10 miles and very easy walking so we arrived at our B&B by 3:00--definitely a record. We still managed to get off trail once and had to retrace our steps...but we weren't too far off. We could see the road ahead of us that we needed to get to, but we took a wrong turn in a pasture and couldn't find a way out! We ... read more

We actually managed to find our way out of town today without getting lost! In fact, we didn't get lost at all today which was a good thing since the walk was already 15+ miles. This was the first day where the walk was rather tedious and somewhat boring. It was mostly flat with most of the walking through farmland as well as a number of miles along roads. I have enjoyed the farms and pastures on previous days because I loved seeing the sheep and cows, but today was primarily through fields of grain...wheat, barley, poppy, hay. When I complained at one point about the monotony of the scenery, Pat reminded me that the barley growing was mostly going to the wonderful beer we have been drinking! We did walk through one small hamlet (Bolton ... read more

While today was a rest day, I still ended up walking over 6 miles exploring Richmond. I am so glad we scheduled this rest day...not only because we were all ready for a break from walking, but because it would have been a shame to miss having some time in this charming, historic town. We began the day visiting the Town Hall which has one of two pictures of Elizabeth I hanging in the council room. It was interesting that we just went to the office and said we wanted go see the picture and they opened the door for the 5 of us to look at it....no fancy security checks! There was a Pilates class setting up in the main hall while we were looking at the picture, and three women in our group decided ... read more

Our day began as many others have....having difficulty getting on the right trail out of town. Today we lost close to an hour and 11/2 miles at the start of our day's walk. We put part of the blame on our guidebook which said to "cross the bridge" after leaving the path. We did cross the bridge and the subsequent directions and signposts seemed okay for awhile. It turns out we were supposed to cross the bridge when we exited the path but not actually cross the river...just cross the road. Anyway, we are all ready to take a cab to the trail when we leave Richmond! We did end up having another great day walking. The weather looked threatening in the morning but we only had clouds....no rain at all and the sun came out ... read more
