The five American and two Dutch women heading out to the moors For the first time, Internet was so poor last night that I wasn't able to write. We were staying on a farm outside the village of Glaisdale and Internet was only sporadic.
We had another relatively short and easy walk across the heather covered moors. We arrived in the small village of Glaisdale too early to go to the farm so we thought we'd walk to the next town and take the bus back. Someone directed us to the path but it turned out to be the wrong direction. We ended up back at the only pub in town when we realized we were headed the wrong way. We saw the guy who sent us and he apologized saying he thought we were doing the coast to coast from East to West. We decided just to have a beer at the Pub and head to the farm.
Today we had a very short walk--less than 8 miles so we decided to break up the day by taking a diesel train from Grosmont (a village at the midway point of today's walk) to Whitby. Whitby is a popular seaside resort town on the North Sea. It's only 5 miles north of where we will be ending our walk on Saturday. The train ride was only 20 minutes so we had 3 hours there.
It was a bit of a jolt to suddenly be in a bustling seaside town that reminded me in many ways of just about any beach town....lots of touristy shops, crowded streets, street performers etc. However, scenery was much more dramatic than any seaside town I've ever been to. There were high cliffs all around....I climbed the 199 steps to the Whitby Abbey and church. There were graves from the 12th century. I had very little time to explore or read any history. Since this was an unplanned stop I didn't read anything in advance.
We also all had fish and chips....Whitby is supposed to be the best place in all of England to get them. They were good but part of the fun was getting the big box and eating them on the beach.
We arrived back in Grosmont by 3:00 and made it to our Farm in Littlebeck by 5:00. The hike was less than 4 miles this afternoon but it started out with a mile climb up a steep hill on s road...not the most fun hike we've had.
The farm we are staying on is a large working farm. The farmhouse has been in the family for generations. We arrived at the back walking through their fields of sheep and cows. We had a wonderful family style meal...the Dutch sisters are here so there were the z7 of us for dinner.
Tomorrow we say goodbye to Afka and Simona who have been with us for many of the days and have stayed at the same places many nights. They will arrive at Robin Hoods Bay tomorrow night but we have a shorter walk tomorrow and will do the last 4 miles into Robin Hoods Bay on Saturday morning, it's hard to believe that we are almost there!
