After yesterdays hike, today's 13+ miles almost seemed like a rest day. There was very little elevation after a short climb at the beginning and best of all, there was no rain all day. We were told by someone at the inn last night that the winds yesterdaY were actually up to 50 miles/hour where we were hiking! Anyway, today we had an easy amble along the river Swale in the Yorkshire Dales. This area was a center of silver mining in the 19th century and we saw lots of evidence of the early history of the area. The landscape was dotted with structures built for the workers and there were dry stone fences everywhere that separated the small plots that the workers were given to farm enough to feed there families. The land is now ... read more

I thought the hike in the Lakes District a few days ago was challenging but after today that hike was a walk in the park. Our hike today crossed the Pennines, the highest point being where the Nine Standards are, which are mysterious piles of stone similar to Stonehenge. The hike involved not only a significant climb and subsequent descent, but many miles of hiking over bogs...which in some places could not be crossed without walking in muck over our ankles. This all would have been challenging enough even in ideal conditions. Our weather today for most of the 13 miles was steady rain with winds at 35 mph at the highest part. The rain felt like needles on our face.....partly because there was sleet part of the time! The wind was so strong that I needed ... read more

Another day of new adventures on the C2C. In the first hour of our walk today we probably all changed our outerwear three times. It was surprisingly warm when we started out, though the skies were threatening. We were walking fast since it was easy terrain and we quickly shed our outer layer. it then went from drizzly to rain but still warm, to cool and cloudy, to a brief period of heavier rain to windy, and cloudy. We ended the day with bright sunshine and a lovely cool breeze. We are getting used to constantly changing weather. New experiences today included walking across a "manure meadow", seeing ruins from 700 a.d., walking through endless moors and pastures with views of hillsides and mountains in every direction while constantly surrounded by sheep, goats and cows. We ... read more

More true Coast to Coast experiences....first time getting really lost so our mileage is a couple of miles longer than expected. We found ourselves in the middle of beautiful farmland and clearly off track. Despite two compasses and two maps and five brilliant women, we still weren't sure how to get where we wanted to go. We finally turned on one of the women's phone with GPS with an app where she had downloaded waypoints of the C2C route. We then were able to find our way back to the route. Tomorrow we plan to make use of this technology as soon as we question where we are! A highlight of our walk today was a visit to Shap Abbey.....the original tower from the 13 century still stands at the original height and the ruins still ... read more

We began our last day of hiking in the Lake District dressed for cool, damp weather. Our group had been split into two different B&Bs so we had made plans to meet at the place where we were picking up our trail. The three of us staying at Old Country View (Where Wainwright stayed many times) got advice from the the owners regarding the difficult climb of the highest peak in the Lake District. One told us to stay on the ridge, following a rocky path but avoiding the very steep descent on the traditional route. The other owner said we should take the traditional route because it was going to be very cloudy and possibly raining so we would want to get off the mountain as quickly as possible. Armed with this conflicting advice, we ... read more

We are still in the Lake District and we continue to see new and spectacularly beautiful scenery. Today we had the true Lakelands experience with weather ranging from "peaks of sunshine " to gale force winds and rain that briefly felt like it was mixed with sleet. Our morning started with navigation questions...first to find our way back to the trail! We passed a couple coming up the road, who were able to give us very clear directions since he lived close by, right off the trail. We were briefly detained by a traffic jam. (See picture below). We then began our ascent to Grisedale Tarn (lake). it was cloudy, cool and misty and it was difficult to decide what to wear. The ascent was steep and long and no one wanted to wear rain gear ... read more

A full day of sunshine with more incredible scenery, a huge variety of hiking experiences ending with a wonderful evening in a pub in Grasmere. Grasmere is one of the better known places where we will be staying since it is where Wordsworth wrote much of his poetry and where he us buried. Although the actual hike today was supposed to be only 9 miles we added some extra mileage at the beginning if the day when we followed "Melbourne Jeff" when he turned onto a wooded trail. A few of us felt that we should be continuing straight, but since "Melbourne Jeff" was doing the Coast to Coast for the 3rd time AND he was using a GPS, we all decided he must be right. After about 1/2 mile of climbing straight up a rocky ... read more

I planned to write about the Full English Breakfast to start this post, but I'm too tired to write anything more than a brief description of the hike today. A brief summary- An incrediible day of hiking...scenery was amazing and probably especially appreciated given the challenges of getting to these views! The day started with an easy and lovely hike along Ennerdale Water. We next climbed to Haystacks....for my D.C hiking fiends....10 times more challenging than Old Rag! We didn't arrive at our B&B in Stonethwaite until 6:30. We are glad tomorrow is a shorter day (9 miles), assuming we don't add a lot of miles when we miss trails! We did meet a few more people on the trail today. We haven't met any Americans yet....Several Dutch, a few Germans and of course, many Brits. ... read more

Today we wore rain pants and gaiters and we're all much drier at the end of the day. We did actually see the sun for about 5 minutes in the early afternoon! Despite the clouds and occasional rain, it was a much better weather day today than yesterday....no heavy, steady rain and there was less mist and fog and we were able to enjoy some great views from the top of our first fell (hill) in the Lake District. We had our last view of the Irish Sea from the top Dent Hill, which was a steady, fairly steep climb but over easy terrain. Our descent down the other side was very steep....a challenging black diamond ski slope! Again, the terrain wasn't too difficult but we were all glad that it wasn't raining because it would ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cumbria » St Bees July 27th 2015

After 23 hours of travel, we arrived in St. Bees Sunday evening. St. Bees is a charming little village on the Irish Sea. It is where most Coast to Coasters start their walk, though a few walk from west to east and end in St Bees. There are a few B&B's and a couple of inns with pubs as well as one small convenience store that also serves as the Post Office. The five of us set off this morning to hike from St. Bees to the town of Sandwith and made a return loop back to St.Bees which will decrease our miles tomorrow from 14 1/2 to less than 10. It turned out to be an excellent decision since we all learned a lot about what to wear in the rain! We learned that carrying ... read more
