We are up at 6.00am for an early morning game drive. We haven't gone far when we spot a Hippo wandering back to his waterhole after his night's exertions. Then almost immediately afterward we find a super-pride of around 27 lions stalking a lone Buffalo that has separated from the herd. The Buffalo wanders slowly out of range of the Lions who don't seem too keen on taking on the Buffalo. Further on a smaller pride of lions with a Wildebeest they have killed overnight. Later, we are watching a Leopard hanging in a tree when we notice a family of Cheetah, a mother with 4 grown cubs, circling slowly in the tall grass. As we watch a herd of Thompson's Gazelle take fright, but it's too late for one of them as there is a ... read more

Today we take another long drive, this time west to the Grumeti River in search of the great Wildebeest migration, which is something I really want to see. The herds of Wildebeest and Zebra slowly thicken as we move west and suddenly, it seems, the plain is completely filled with Wildebeest, what an awesome site. I had hoped we might see the herds crossing the Grumeti River, it was a long shot, but you hope for these things. I didn't quite get my wish but as we came to the river ford the bodies of those Widebeest that had attempted the crossing and failed were piled up in the river with a vast flock of Vultures and Maribu Storks feasting on the carcasses. You definitely didn't want to get downwind of that lot. As we follow ... read more

It's surprisingly cold during the night and doesn't really get warmed up until around 10.00am, the showers are cold so most of the Americans give it a miss. Breakfast is plentiful, I think I'm going to be one of the few people in Africa putting on weight. At 8.00am we are off on a game drive around the Central Serengeti area. There are a lot of ungulates (Gazelle, Wildebeest, Eland & Haartebeast etc) about as we are seeing the very tail end of the migration. The highlights of the morning's trip are a pair of lions a Leopard with its kill (a Thompson's Gazelle) stashed up in a tree, herds of Elephant and Giraffe. Back to camp for lunch and a couple of hours rest in the a tent that now closely resembles an Indian sweatlodge. ... read more

A lazy start to a looong day's driving with breakfast at 8.30 then pack up the LandCruiser and on the road by 10.00am. We are heading for the Serenera Camp Site in the middle of the Serengeti Park, going via the Ngorongoro Reserve. A couple of hours into the trip and the first site of the Ngorongoro Crater from the rim is worth the whole trip - it's a truly spectacular site. Another hours drive through the Maasai country around Ngorongoro, with herds of cattle and goats being driven by Maasai boys in what seems very inhospitable country, and we come to the entrance to the Serengeti Park. The southern end of the park is very dry with a distinct lack of either flora or fauna but as we move north and west it slowly becomes ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » North » Lake Manyara July 5th 2012

Met up with the group I would be travelling with. 2 girls from US, a couple from US and a Canadian girl then fought our way through the crazy traffic in Arusha, thereafter a 2 hour drive to our camp above the Lake Manyara reserve. We go on our first gamedrive around lake Manyara, a soda lake with lots of flamingoes. The park is quite small but has tree climbing lions, giraffe, elephant Zebra etc so great for a first taste of safari. The campsite is a permanent one so tents are pitched on a concrete pad with camp beds, all very comfortable and Captain Delicious, aka Charles the Cook excels himself with a 4 course dinner.... read more

Spent half a day in the air to get here. As we descended into Kilimanjaro Airport a huge full moon hung Mt Kilimanjaro - what a spectacular sight, however the size of it did reinforce that I'd made the right decision in Not climbing it. Had a guy waiting for me at the airport which was welcome and asked him to stop at a bank with an ATM on the way to the hotel and that's when things got a bit interesting. The machine slowly swallowed my card then announced it was out of service with my card still in the slot but just beyond reach. After prolonged discussion with the driver and a couple of security people that threatened to go on all night I got out my trusty pocket knife and by the light ... read more

Africa » Rwanda » Ville de Kigali » Kigali July 3rd 2012

Today is my final day in Rwanda, so what have I learnt about the place? Travel-wise, the North - Musanze and the Parc National des Volcans are well geraed towards the independent traveller, it is easy to get to by bus and easy to get around, although it is expensive by African standards, Kigali is alos an easy place to get around although it can be confusing as it lacks street signs and the roads wind back and forth around the hills. There is a big push on to improve the roading and singposting in Kigali. The south of the country is much harder to travel independently although with time and patience it can be done, expect to pay the same price (5200 Rwf) for a bus from Gisakura to Butare as you would from Gisakura ... read more

Africa » Rwanda » Ville de Kigali » Kigali July 2nd 2012

Met up with Innocent, was invited back to have a look at his Mother's friend's house where he stay in Musanze. Its a simple 3 room house consisting of 2 bedrooms and a central living area. The cookhouse and bathroom are separate. It has everything they need. Then its a mad rush to get tickets and jump on the bus back to Kigali - why do Africans insist on closing all the windows on the bus? I'm about ready to expire when we get back. Innocent's sister Isembe is at the bus station to meet us, a very pretty and studious 18 year old. We went to Cafe Bourbon and spent a couple of hours talking about life in Kigali then Innocent went back to Musanze to get more work, Isembe back to campus and I ... read more

Up at 5.00am, breakfast at 5.45am and met up with my driver who will take my up to Park HQ. After what appears to be some sort of auction process where the guides and drivers all yell how many people they have in their group we are eventually assigned a Gorilla group to see. There are 6 of us that will visit with the Titus group. The guide explained that Titus was the son of Digit, Dianne Fossey's favourite. Titus was known as the kking of the Gorillas and had a very large family of around 35 Gorillas including 6 Silverbacks. His first son Rano was a rambunctious sort and got fed u being kept in line by his father so he split from the family and attempted to take some of the females with him ... read more

I had intended going to the Genocide Memorial in Kigali this morning but had not realised the extent to which Umuganda applies. The streets are completely empty of vehicles, including taxis and motos as every person 18 or over, including the President, is expected to clean up their local area from 8.00am - 11.00am. Will have to put the Genocide Memorial off to another day. Wandered down to the bus station to wait for my bus to Musanze and got talking to a 20 year old Rwandan Engineering Student. His story was a pretty harrowing one with him and his sister being orphaned in the 1994 genocide. He was 2 and she just 8 months old at the time. Some how he made it from Musanze, in the north of Rwanda to the UN camps in ... read more
