After more than 2 weeks in Hanoi, albeit with excursions to Sapa and Halong Bay, I was getting decidedly twitchy, it was time to be on the road again. Everything was timed to perfection, we had said goodbye the night before to the lovely girls that looked after us so well in Le Petit Hotel Hanoi, we had a leisurely breakfast and the taxi was there right on the dot of 7.30 to take us to the airport. I'm always a little suspicious when everything runs so smoothly and today would prove that my instincts are good. I checked in without a problem, Hanoi airport is probably one of the more efficient airports on the planet. Lis wasn't due to check in for another hour so we waited a while then I made my way through ... read more

It's the last full day in Hanoi and indeed in Vietnam as tomorrow I head for Laos and there is one last thing on my list to be ticked off, a Vietnamese cooking class. We went to a restaurant called Madame Yen about a week ago and thought the food was great, also noticed that they hold cooking classes so that's where we headed. Nancy, the assistant restaurant manager, met us at the hotel and we walked down to the local wet market, where she explained all of the many local herbs and spices along with the various kinds of noodles and rice used in Vietnamese cooking. Then it was back to the restaurant to get into it. The menu for our efforts consisted of: Green papaya with dried beef salad Grilled Aubergine Grilled duck on ... read more

The French quarter borders lake Hoan kiem to the south east and is an altogether quieter and more sophisticated part of the city with wide, tree-lined boulevards, and flash hotels and eateries and shops to keep the rich from getting bored. It has none of the hustle and bustle and vibrancy of the narrow streets of the Old Quarter. The grandest of the hotels looks to be the Hotel Metropole, built in 1901, with Bentleys, Mercedes and Lexus parked outside it is still the place to see and be seen. As in Paris, the streets in the French quarter all converge on one spot, in this case at the very elegant Opera House. After stopping for coffee in a cafe in the park beside the opera house it was back to reality and a lunch of ... read more

We started out with a 4 hour bus trip from Hanoi to Halong, a trip that would take about 1.5 hours in NZ. Halong is an interesting city with a huge ferris wheel on top of the hill overlooking the city and a cable car running across the bay. By the amount of building work going on its safe to say there are big plans for Halong. When we arrived at the dock we were put aboard a small tender and told to put on our life jackets unless we wanted to be invited for a cup of tea in the police inspectors office. They have apparently had some horrendous accidents over the years so are at least paying lip service to safety now. The tender took us all of 50 metres to the cruise ship, ... read more

Our guide from yesterday, I now know that her name is spelt Dao but pronounced Yioau, met us just before 9.00am and we were joined by a young couple from Holland, 4 Italians and the 2 older Germans from yesterday. Today was a 12km hike along roads and through rice fields with a lot of ups and downs. It was, mercifully, a beautiful sunny day or the trails would have been deadly. The views were absolutely breathtaking, like something out of one of the advertising brochures, with terraced rice fields rising hundreds of metres up the sides of steep mountains. It beggars the mind to think of the local people rising at 4 or 4.30am then traipsing for 3 or 4 kilometres, pretty much all of it uphill, to put in a hard days graft in ... read more

After a blissful 6 hours on a gently swaying soft bed we were woken to the conductor singing "coffee, tea, morning coffee, tea" shortly before we pulled into Lao Cai at 6.00am. We were then bundled into a minivan for the 45 minute trip from Lao Cai to Sapa, which is all uphill. Sapa has a slightly faded alpine feel to it, and the temperature is around 15 degrees cooler than anywhere else in Vietnam which makes it very pleasant indeed. In Sapa we were shown to our hotel, Hotel Auberge, given breakfast and had a shower before setting off with an elderly German couple and our Black Hong guide, Yioaw. I have no idea if that's how it's spelt but that's how it sounds, I know because I originally thought it was Miaow which had ... read more

Packed our bags and checked out of the hotel then headed off to the Vietnamese women's museum which, from the posters in the entrance way looked suspiciously like the museum of hairy legged feminism but did in fact turn out to be very interesting. It covered everything from the varying marriage customs in the differing ethnic groups through child birth, naming ceremonies and bringing up of children. They also covered off the Vietnamese women's part in the various conflicts and the dress and customs of the many ethnic minorities. Well worth having a look despite initial impressions. At that point we were in dire need of sustenance and found a great patisserie just over the road. Suitably fortified with freshly baked croissants and all manner of other goodies along with a couple of coffees we ventured ... read more

Yesterday morning I went out to the airport to pick Lis up as she has decided to join me on my travels for a couple of weeks. The trip to the airport was an event on itself. Once you get out of the city limits you are surrounded by market gardens that supply the city of Hanoi with food. There is not a lot in the way of logistics and refrigeration so proximity is essential. In the afternoon we took a bit of a wander through the old quarter while Lis got used to the concept of walking in the narrow streets because the footpaths are all either parking places for motorcycles or places of business. Stepping out in front of dozens of motorcycles every time you cross the road also takes some getting used to. ... read more

Yesterday was another test of endurance with a 14 hour train trip. It wasn't all bad though, the scenery in the north of Vietnam is very different to the Plains and rice fields of the South. They still have rice fields but also have stunning mountains and karsts and rivers flowing through narrow valleys with water buffalo everywhere. The journey was also made more bearable by the 12 year old girl in the seat next who had been learning English at school for only 2 years but was a great conversationalist. With a bit of help from Google translate we got on famously as she told me all about Vietnam, Ba Na hill station in particular, where her family had just been on holiday, and Vinh city where she lives. As we neared Vinh city she ... read more

Decided to take an organised tour of the royal tombs of the Nguyen dynasty as they were a litle far from town to attempt walking in 38c heat. We started out with a short boat ride on the Perfume river, so called because of all of the sweet smelling trees and flowers that once lined it's banks, to a former Mandarins house. There we drank copious quantities of Jasmine tea while Blue, our guide, filled us in on life in Vietnam in those times, which were not so long ago given the last emporer abdicated in 1945. From there it was a bus trip to the Thien Mu Pagoda, a really beautiful pagoda built on a hill overlooking the Perfume river with a monastery attached. Since the 1960's the pagoda has been a focal point for ... read more
