Yes, a rest stop or an overnight stop It would not be a bad place to stay overnight either. But I believe most people just stay for a rest or to eat some food. /Ake
Summer Most people would prefer summer for hikes especially for the high altitude ones. In winter it snows in Bulgaria and above 2,000 meters it might be very difficult to hike in winter if at all possible. At lower altitude it might get very warm in summer so spring or fall might be just as good or even better.

There is more coming... There are still two more blogs from Bulgaria in the pipeline. They are both theme blogs where one is about the hikes we did and one is about various monuments. There are some spectacular things hidden in the last one... /Ake
Bulgaria is worth visiting Due to a recent trip where we met some Bulgarians we are now interested in visiting. We enjoyed this blog and are eager to read your others. It is always great traveling to locations that are not too expensive.MJ
Bulgaria !! The rise and fall of prosperous cities in the Ancient world makes fascinating reading. I presume the Thracians were from Thrace which enjoyed a golden age. Are there ruins of Thrace itself on show? Economic decline following the fall of communism was often discussed with our Bulgarian companions on our recent Tajikistan/Kyrgyzstan roadtrip. The Soviets insisted all children attended school to a certain level and we were told everyone was provided with housing and were employed. The Soviet bloc countries that gained independence around 1991 have certainly suffered economically while finding their own way. Interesting to see how Bulgaria develops.
Thracian ruins There are several sites with ruins from the Thracians around Bulgaria. We didn't visit any of them so I can't really say if they are worth going to. The reason we didn't see any ruin site is that we are two people and one likes ruins much more than the other. /Ake
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
