Another visit to Berlin
I liked your Blog on Berlin.
In 1966, I was 25 and went on my first trip outside North America. I was in the US Army and was sent on assignment to West Berlin. I flew into Frankfurt and took an Allied military train at night to West Berlin. The junior officer on the train was designated the "Train Commander". That was me. I had to make sure all the military passengers had military orders written in Russian. I collected the orders and all the identification cards and presented the cards and the orders to the Russian officer who met us as the train entered East Germany. He was not allowed to enter the train to actually see who, or what, was on the train. Our West German locomotive was removed and replaced by an East German locomotive. We lowered the window shades so nobody cold see inside the train.
In the morning, we arrived in West Berlin. At that time, the Allied forces in Berlin were called the "Army of WWII Occupation". My unit's headquarters was in the former SS Barracks. I got to see all around West Berlin. The Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate with its USSR guard at that border crossing, the U-Bahn METRO train, and all the border areas. I met a lot of Germans, Many who were former military said they fought the Russians on the Eastern Front. It was very interesting. After about a month, I departed on the military train. Before going home, I visited Copenhagen and Amsterdam.
Thanks Thanks for the comment. I am pretty sure that I will never go back again. I have been thinking that it would be interesting but it is not likely to happen. /Ake
Political Might Great monument. Makes the effort to digitise your photos worthwhile Ake. Monuments like this reflect the spirit of a country so gotta love it.
I have to look at that thread I might have other photos worth putting in that thread. I have to look for it when I have the time. I clearly remember The Red Brick Road in Bangladesh being worth a picture in the blog. /Ake
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
