Kitties For a moment I thought you'd posted a collection of cat photos from across your travels! :) I'd heard that 'the authorities' have tried to close down this sanctuary a few times, due to complaints from tourists... but I think it's fabulous that they are off the streets and are well looked after. Plus I'm sure some people would visit the ruins just to see the cats - we certainly would.
Hmmm... collection of cat pics A blog with only cat pictures would be nice. I like that idea and we might take up on that in the future. As of now we have at least 5 photos of cats in various blog entries. When we have more, 15 or 20 or so, we might repost them all together. It will be many years until we get there though so don't hold your breath. /Ake
Who in their right mind would complain? I can't understand how anyone can get offended about the cats. As you said, a cat sanctuary is good for the cats and spin off effect is that it draws tourists to this otherwise rather anonymous site. /Ake
Shell island ! Some fascinating places you visited. So sad that the Earth is being polluted and by us ! I am noticing so much rubbish at the sides of the road here is Sussex , England.
Exploring You certainly did lots of exploring on this trip. I am reading your blogs altogether a bit like doing a box set !! I suppose the tourists who go all inclusive want to feel “safe “ in their cocoon of a resort and just chill out on the beach. Well maybe it’s a good idea to have them stay there and it leaves the rest of the countryside for real travellers like you to explore.
Thanks for reading our blogs I guess reading all the blogs after each other makes a lot of sense. We are happy that you liked them enough to keep reading after the first one. /Ake
Themes I love the idea of a theme of balconies .... good fun . And maybe I will beat you to it and do one on doors as it seems I am drawn to taking photos of doors too.
Goats Love the goat on the roof. Goats eat anything so they are pretty hardy creatures to domesticate in West Africa. Did you also see sheep in Senegal?
On sheep in West Africa I honestly can't say if we saw any sheep or not. We didn't take any photos of sheep, that I know. I guess sheep are not as sturdy and tolerant as goats so they would be more difficult to keep. /Ake
Very Interesting Really interesting blog...an island of discarded oyster shells...stilt grain storage huts...ancient stone circles...village life...and then there was the ever present garbage. Ethiopia is the only African country we have visited where indiscriminate scattering of garbage was not present. To us this was a result of cultural pride. Staggers you and staggers me. Sad indiscriminate garbage is an ever present image of your time in Senegal and The Gambia...sad indeed.
Senegal...then there was the music We saw Youssou Ndour in concert at the Sydney Opera House this week...13 musicians in West African dress wowing a full house with Afro Pop beats. We saw Robert Plant & the Sensational Space Shifters at the same venue the night before with Justin Adams on guitar...the guy who plays with Juldeh Camara of The Gambia and played with Robert Plant at the Festival au Desert in Mali in 2004. We determined to go to the Blues on the River in Senegal after seeing Baaba Maal. After the concerts during the week our delay in not chasing the music in Senegal is becoming critical. If we could also catch Orchestra Baobab our excuses would be reduced to nil. Maybe our singing under a Dakar moon is getting closer if you can pave the way.
Apparently, these are 'great white pelicans'. We get lots of pelicans here on the Cdn prairies but they're from the 'brown pelican' family. They are stark white as adults.
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
Angel Falls in Ven... full info
