The Ancient Cities An early 6am start to my day and my driver Anish was ready and excited about the 2 day trip that he had planned for me. A few days before l had approached a few taxi drivers that operate around the hotel area, with a list of places that l wanted the see whilst in Sri Lanka. After being quoted some of the funniest prices for this trip, l spotted Anish who had taken me a few times into town. I give him the list and his quote, with a hotel room for the night including evening meal and breakfast was still expensive compared to India but in the previous week l had learnt that Sri Lanka is not India and nor are there prices. Our first stop after a 3 hour ... read more

Asia December 4th 2008

It had just dawned on me that for the first time since leaving the UK 4 months ago, that this was the first time l was on my own. I have been with many during my time at Campfire in South Africa. There were 6 of us during the teaching project in Himachal, India and 3 sunning ourselves in Goa. I also was in the company of 2 whilst we travelled Kerala. So my arrival in Sri Lanka was in itself my own journey and mine only. The flight from Kerala was a quick hour during which time we were served a Meal and even a beer. The next minute l had passed through customs and free to explore this island. I had previously pre-booked a room via the internet so that l had a base ... read more

So after a couple of days in Kochi we set of on a 3 day tour to see what Kelara had to offer. We had arranged for a Taxi driver to pick the 3 of us up at 6.30am to drive the 120km to our first night stay in Munnar. This journey was to take us 4 hours on sometime good roads and then onto roads with more potholes than even Delhi. During the drive we stop at many pit-stops to view waterfalls, dams and the magnificent Tea plantation. The Cheeyappara & Valara Waterfall The Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls are located between Neriamangalam and Adimali on the Kochi - Madurai highway. The Cheeyappara Falls cascades down in seven steps. It is a real feast for the eyes. This is also a great place for trekking. Valara ... read more

Ok so I changed my mind!!! As some of you know I had planned to be in Goa until 12th December 2008. After a great few weeks in this Paradise and meeting the Swiss pair I decided to join them on their trip around Kerala. This is still on the Coast of India just two states further south. We left the Patnam on the Tuesday evening to join the train to Kochi in Kerala at 10.30pm to catch the 11.18pm train. This finally turned up at midnight and the Fabien and Cornalla had booked their ticket the week before and were able to get a 3 tier sleeper with A/C however as I only decided to join them on the Monday morning there were only sleeper tickets available. So they joined the train near the ... read more

So after about a week in the resort of Palolem it was time for Suzannah to to end her year long journey around the world and had back to the Grey & Wet Country otherwise known as Home in the UK. So after 6 weeks together we were now just two, myself and Sue. We had already descided that we would move on from this quiet beach onto an even quieter one about 2 km away. So on Monday morning it was time to pack the rucksack again and move onwards. Mind you I'm now getting a dab hand at the art of packing or is it that I now have another small ruck sack too? So after a quick Taxi ride we both arrive at our new home for the next couple of weeks. Patnam ... read more

So now the next step of my journey involves travelling from Himachal Pradesh to Kangra Airport which is about an hours drive from camp. This small airport only has a few flights a day. Myself and Sue took the Kingfisher Flight (Same company that makes the Kingfisher Beer) to Delhi were we were to stay for a couple of night while we waited for Suzannah to meet up with us as she took the Train to Delhi. She was travelling with Inger and Anna as well so she had company on the way too. Both girls were on their way back home and we were all to stay in the same hotel and have our last meal toghter before they left. The flight was fantastic as we flew over the Himalayian Mountains which you could see ... read more

The Tea Capital of North India "Wanna go see where a cup of tea comes from?" we are asked "Teabag of course" comes the comedy reply. (Yes ok that was from me) "No, real tea" 20 minutes later the group arrived at the Palapur Tea Co-Operative Tea Company. We are taken around the factory were we see Tea leaves from freshly picked to the end product. About Palampur and its history with Tea Palampur is the tea capital of northwest India. Set on the rising slopes of Kangra Valley before they merge with the Dauladhar ranges. But tea is just one aspect that makes Palampur a special resort. Abundance of water and proximity to the mountains has endowed it with mild climate. The town has derived its name from the local word "pulum', meaning lots ... read more

Some picture to show you how the Children Classroom turned out As some of you know myself and Suzannah are volunteering in a Mentally Challanged School here at camp in Himachel Pradesh. When we first arrived the classroom that the children were being taught in was very poorly decorated so the we decided to paint the walls white and then paint bright coloured ABC & 123 on the walls hopefully to inspire their learning. Many of the children are able to repeat back basic ABC but after a few minutes are unable to repeat them back or have no concept of what ABC is or why. Some of the other children it is still not possible for them to say or even repeat the ABC yet. But hopefully over time this may become possible. We are ... read more

Dharamasala is steeped in history and blesses by nature. Nestling in the Dhauladhar ranges of the Himachal Pradesh, its one of the most important centres of Buddhism. For those in quest of a place for a peaceful time. Dharamasala can be a perfect retreat. Since it is the seat of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-exile, the very presence of so many monks can have a calming effect on the nerves. From the pulls and pressures of City life (Delhi for one) can instantly be transported into a world of peace and quiet where monasteries, fluttering white flags, prayer wheels and long nature walks can overtake senses. It took us a 2 ½ hour Indian bus ride on the Saturday morning from outside our camp in Sungal to the very heart of Dharamasala. The road ... read more

During our volunteer project there is an included trip to Amritsar, we started our journey at 5.30am for the 300km drive to region of Punjab. Like the other roads trips in India it was full of colour and interesting sights and sounds. We made it to our Hotel at around 12pm and after a quick lunch and shower the group went for Tuk-Tuk drive in search for a Coffee Shop. After about an hour of searching we found the Indian version of Costa Coffee complete with muffins and Chocolate brownies. Myself and Susannah even brought a Cafeteria and real coffee to enjoy when we return back to camp. It was time to return to the hotel we got onto some rickshaws for what sould have been a easy trip back. Unfortunate for our guy he was ... read more
