The 5 hour Greyhound coach journey was for once and real pleasure as there were only 10 people on the coach and once we reached Newcastle there was only myself and another guy from the UK named Richard that continued to Tamworth were l got off and made my way to the YHA about a 15 minute walk from the coach stop. From Office boy to Cowboy in 5 easy steps Our pick up from the YHA was planned for 10am so once up and ready l had time to take a quick tour of the local area and my daily intake of fresh coffee. Once back at the hostel Hilton from Leconfield Farm was there ready to take us the 50km drive through the countryside to our home for the next 11 days. What should ... read more

When Paul & Allison invited me to spend the week with them in Melbourne, they had also told me that on the Easter weekend we would be going to Nagambie which is located in a pastoral and agricultural region between Seymour and Shepparton, on the shores of the picturesque Lake Nagambie. Nagambie is an attractive holiday spot, offering varied water activities on the man-made lake and the neighbouring Goulburn River. The town centre is built around the Goulburn Valley Highway which opens up into a wide boulevard through Nagambie's commercial precinct, featuring attractive gardens in the central strip. Jacobsons Outlook is an attractive park which extends from the shops and down to the shores of Lake Nagambie, offering panoramic views across the lake. A couple of popular access points to Lake Nagambie are located on the ... read more

So now I'm in Australia once again and this time my first stop is Melbourne, Victoria. I arrived after my Qantas flight from Christchurch to Sydney and a overnight train journey to Melbourne's Southern Cross Station. I am staying with Paul and his Parents John & Chris just outside the main area of Melbourne called Beveridge. Paul & his girlfriend Allison were on the same tour in Vietnam and had invited me to stay if ever l was in Melbourne and l was pleased to take up their offer. During the afternoon Paul and his mum took me for a drive around their local area and was amazed that about 5 minutes away is the Childhood home of the Infamous Ned Kelly. Ned Kelly Edward "Ned" Kelly (3 June 1854 - 11 November 1880) was an ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Milford Sound March 29th 2009

Milford Sound (Piopiotahi in Māori) is a fjord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey, and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination. Rudyard Kipling had previously called it the eighth Wonder of the world, and boy was it worth the 5 hour drive from Queenstown. Along the way the weather turned and for once it was great to have the rain as to see Milford Sound. We had a ten minute stop outside the Homer Tunnel that connets the rest of New Zealand and Milford Sound. The traffic lights only change every 15 minutes as the tunnel is a single line only. Once on the other side ... read more

An Enduring History of High Country Hospitality On our way to Queenstown we stopped in a great place nestled in the rolling hills of the Cardrona Valley, The Cardrona Hotel (Est. 1863) is one of New Zealand's oldest hotels. A comfortable 40 minute drive from Queenstown and only 20 minutes from Wanaka, this unique hotel offers both quality accommodation and traditional hospitality. With breathtaking scenery, this tranquil rural setting boasts a hotel steeped in history from the gold rush era. While dry tussock gently ripples in the breeze, relax in an air of timeless comfort and understated style while recapturing yesteryear. A Brief History of the Cardrona Hotel The township of Cardrona began in 1865, when hundreds of settlers came to the Cardrona Valley, eager to stake their claim. As word got around, the settlement ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Franz Josef March 26th 2009

As like most of New Zealand Franz Josef Glacier is yet another great place to visit, and so different from other parts of the country that l have been falling in love with as each day goes by. The group are staying in Chateau Franz and really cool hostel with even a Hot tub. In the morning most of the group had book to climb the main attraction, the Franz Josef Glacier. A few had arrange to do the Heli hike which involved being taken about 3/4 of the way up the glacier and spend a bit of time looking around, however l felt a lot more adventurous and opted for the full day hike up the glacier. So at 8.15am we booked into the office and were given our climbing gear (Yep another silly outfit ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Punakaiki March 24th 2009

Punakaiki is sited at the mouth of the Punakaiki River, 40 km north of Greymouth, on the West Coast. This small settlement is well set up for visitors with an information centre, tearooms, tavern, motels, lodges and a motor camp. The Dolomite Point lookout above the famous pancake rocks, is a short walk from the road on a paved loop track. You will hear the booming surf long before you set eyes on the slender towers that have been weathered to resemble a huge stack of pancakes. These strange formations are caused by a chemical process. Long ago layers of lime-rich mud were deposited on the seabed and then overlayed by weaker sheets of soft mud and clay. The seabed was tilted and raised to form coastal cliffs, and wind and water have etched out the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Kaikoura March 23rd 2009

On our way to Kaikoura we stopped at Hunters Vineyard for some early morning wine tasting which is a great way to start the day. Then l remembered that my Uncles favourite wine came from New Zealand and l could not believe that the vineyard was only a short 5 minute drive from the Hunters Vineyard. Dave our tour guide was happy to drive me there and within minutes l was tasting some great white and sparkling wines from one of New Zealand's finest vineyards. During our 4 hour drive we passed some o the most amazing coast line with huge waves crashing into the shore. We stopped for lunch at a great restaurant and had Giant Green Mussels with crusty toasted bread. We also stopped at a few seal colonies, with adult and baby pups. ... read more
