After eating a strawberry pancake (I had actually ordered a banana pancake, but I didn’t have time to return it before we were due to leave) and OJ in the already scorching heat (it wasn’t even 9am, yet it felt like it was midday!) and then lugging all our gear back down the stairs, we leave Miami and head for the Keys. On the road out, we tell each other basically what we got up to this morning. Turns out we were only one block away from Miami Beach! As we head out of Miami, this is where I learn about the very dangerous game of ‘Punch Buggy/Pinch Mini’ that Kylie and Zoe have been playing over the past few days. The rules of the game are simple – if you see a Volkswagen Beetle or ... read more

An early start saw us all head back to that beautiful beach to take a spectacular natural event, a sunrise. It was still mostly dark, but it was already quite warm with a slight breeze in the air so we were all there in our pyjamas and loungewear, and we could feel the sun wasn't far away as the Atlantic horizon was much lighter. We had about 20 minutes or so before the scheduled sunrise, so Graham, Mark and Todd went on a run along the beach. I was tempted to join them, but I would struggle to keep up with them. There was other people on the beach to take in the view, or to just walk their dog, but because of the vastness of the beach, we had out own little spot. I was ... read more

On the road again for another long day of driving, but an hour longer. The drives are becoming a regular long stint in the van with several breaks for sugar load ups and lunch, but this one was around 4 and a half hours to the oldest city in the USA! When we finally hit St Augustine, we were let loose, and Kylie, Zoe, Scott and I went on a walk along the river front, but after only a few buildings round the block, we found a martini bar, and decided to try it out. Setting up on a table outside, Scott and I soon went in to order. Scott stuck with a good cold beer, whilst the rest of us ordered 3 different martinis to try. Having started watching M*A*S*H from a young age, I've ... read more

Once more onto the road, and today's destination was Charleston. Like the previous day, it was just about the drive down to Charleston, but once we reached the town, we parked up and headed for a walk around. I didn't know much about Charleston, apart from the dance, so I didn't mind where I went or who I went around with. In the end, Graham, Sarah, Neal, G, Zoe and I headed over to Colonial Lake, only to discover it was just one big man make lake surrounded by concrete, so after resting my aching feet (it was the first time I had walked in flip flop in years so it needed some getting use to) we headed in another direction towards the Battery. Once there we found the park across the road from the water ... read more

Another early start saw us load up and leave DC behind and head to Fayetteville, North Carolina. This was where we first experienced the 'wonder' that is WalMart, as we began stocking up the food. Group A, which consisted of me, Graham, Sarah and Sumi, were the first to cook for the group, so we headed to get our ingrediants, whilst everyone else helped with the stocking up for breakfast and dinner and then stocking up on supplies of their own. The stop off took longer than it should, but I did make sure I got me a pair of flip flops, and some cold sore cream for one thats appeared this morning. Back on the road, we eeventually stopped off for lunch in a town called Stoney Creek. It had one of those huge sky ... read more

Despite being shattered from the previous day's events and the jet lag, it was an early start, as we headed for the Capital for the day. Todd gave us a brief tour as we headed through the heart of the city to the Washington Monument, where we parked up for the day. At first we all headed across the road towards the park where the Monument is situated, but as we all entered the park, Tanya and I hung back to get our bearings on the map. When we looked up, the rest of the group were already far away, so Tanya and I decided to head around together. Instead of head to the Monument and queue for tickets for later, we headed to another landmark first - 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I was surprised to discover ... read more

After having breakfast with the others, we checked out and headed to the lobby to meet the rest of the Group. For the first time, all 14 of us were together. Todd introduced himself as the Tour Leader and quickly took us through the last minute waiver forms for us to sign - which we all did, with no hesitation! We then mingle amongst the others before being led out to the front of the hotel to our vehicle for the next 9 weeks - a Ford F300 Series 14 seater van and a HaulMark trailer in tow. Todd loaded our stuff up in the trailer, and after managing to do so, we all posed for a group photo before loading ourselves into the van. Todd introduced us to our travel salvation, a draw under the ... read more

Hi and welcome to my blog. In June of this year, I took part in 64 of the best days of my life. I travelled from New York to Los Angeles and back, via British Columbia in Canada. I have never done anything like this, and always thought it would be a distant dream of mine, but I decided to bite the bullet and go for it. And I am so glad that I did, not only did I get to see nearly all the best bits of America (and British Columbia!), I made some new friends, and had the time of my life! On 4th June 2010, I stepped on my plane from London Heathrow (T5!) and headed on to Newark, New Jersey. The flight itself seemed to fly by (no pun intended!) and I ... read more
