I awoke to find that Emma had tried to call but couldn’t get through. All I got was a barrage of abuse on an answer phone message from the office. It would've been nice to speak to the gang from work, but what was weird was that I didn’t miss anyone from home yet. Normally one or two people would have crossed my thoughts now and then, but at that moment, nothing. And it felt kinda great! Today was just another drive to an overnight site, but when we arrived, were we impressed with the site! It wasn't a KOA, just an historic site, in that on the site is a natural water source, complete with little fishes swimming in it with humans. This ‘pool’ is quite big as well. There are 3 parts to the ... read more

Today was my birthday! I woke at 6am, to find I was the first one up. As I left my tent to head to the shower, Sarah had just woken and was packing up her stuff from one of the picnic tables she slept on the previous night. After having a quick shower, I took my tent down, and waited for the others to all wake up. They slowly all say ‘Happy Birthday’ to me, and despite now being 24, I still enjoy my birthday every year. As usual, once everyone had breakfasted and packed up, we soon hit the road, but not before the group all sang ‘Happy Birthday’ in the van to me. Grinning like a Cheshire cat, I send us on our way with the first tune of the day. As we were ... read more

I seemed a little down today as we were travelled to San Houston Jones State Park. I wasn't sure whether it was the fact that one of my blisters on my shoulder had burst, or that some weird rash had appeared on my nose. Either way I felt I couldn’t seem to catch a break. First it was the cold sore at the start of the trip, then the swollen feet, the numerous bites, which we’ve all suffered, the burns and blisters and now the nose thing. It made me think what could be possibly next - bubonic plague? Another possibility could be that tomorrow was my birthday. It would be a significant one, as it will be my first one on my own. I know that the rest of the guys were planning a little ... read more

The morning after the night before, and I was now paying for it. Some how I lost my boxers during the night, and awoke a few minutes before Zoe said she would come and check on me. The doors to the rooms had clear glass on them, covered only by a thinly veiled curtain. It was clear to see through to the courtyard outside, but the view the opposite way was blurred. When Zoe finally knocked, I could see her approach, and tried to call out that I was awoke and OK. Sadly, my voice seemed to have disappeared after the previous nights escapades, so Zoe knocked a couple more times with the same result, until finally she let herself in with my spare door key. By now I was sitting upright in bed, stark naked, ... read more

After leaving Panama City Beach, we headed for New Orleans, and in doing so, passed through the 3 states of Florida, Alabama and Louisiana. Sadly after the burns from the previous day, blisters had already formed on my shoulders and upper arms, so I started applying plenty of Aloe Vera in an effort to combat it. On the journey in, we stopped at Honey Island Swamp Tours on the outskirts of New Orleans, where Captain Charlie took us through the swamps. Just as we set off, the rains began, making the humid weather a little more humid. Almost straight away we saw one of the younger gators, whom Charlie fed marshmallows – reasons for this vary – as well as sausages on a stick to get him right up to the boat and to get him ... read more

First thing in the morning we headed out for a wave runner tour, where we were sharing jet skis (I was sharing with Zoe!). After the very basic instructions on how to drive and steer the jet skis and filled up with plenty of fuel, at our own pump station, we soon headed out to the open waters to wiggle our ways along the coast and slightly out to sea and finally reach a spot for some dolphin spotting and also to swim in the Gulf of Mexico. It was the first time I’ve ever been on a jet ski, and was very mindful of Zoe on the back. I tried not to go too fast, thinking Zoe could fall off. Turns out I was too mindful and not quick enough to keep up with the ... read more

The next destination was destination Panama City Beach, which meant another long drive, in fact the longest of the trip to date. We mostly slept, but when we stopped at Lake Manatee State Park for lunch we had a swim in the natural spring. It was a small area where a spring just appears from below, bellowing water up to the surface and then leading into the nearby Lake Manatee itself. As it’s a natural spring, the water was quite cold, but refreshing, and the stones are unaltered under foot. You can feel all the algae and slime on the top of the rocks, as we all struggled to balance on them. Jess ends up jumping on my back and 'riding' me as she’s too scared of the nearby gators, even though they couldn’t get into ... read more

We rolled into Disneyland, and after dropping people of at the park of their choosing, I had to ask Todd to take me back to the cabin. I hadn’t decided to crash at the cabin, although as I think about it now, that didn’t sound like a bad option, but instead, I’d forgotten 3 important things – my camera, my drinks bottle, and of course – P King Duck! On our return I asked Todd to drop me of at the nearest park entrance and I'd make my way from there. It turned out to be Hollywood Studios, which worked out great, because last time I was here, we never got round to watching the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular. But first I decided to call work. I don’t know why, maybe I decided it was time ... read more

When I woke, my feet seemed better already. They weren't aching as much and the swelling had gone down considerably. We finally broke camp and soon set off for our next destination – Orlando, which was the longest trip of the tour. Because of my feet, it was decided that I would sit on the right side of the back seat, which is where the aisle was, so I could rest my feet on the wheel arch in front of me. Sadly the only way out of Key West was the same as coming in, so we had the same lack of variety of views on the trip. Still, it could have been worse, it could've been raining and we could have a limited view. When we finally reached our next site, and after checking in, ... read more

When I woke I was greeted with the rise of the sun, which over the surrounding water, made for a wonderful sight. I’m glad I’m able to experience something so wonderful, especially with what had happened earlier in the night. When the sun fully rises, I notice that one of the many small boats in the water seems to have half sunk, presumably from the storm, but no one remembers if it was like that yesterday. The fact that there hasn’t been any commotion or rescue crew presence at anytime maybe proves that it has been there a while already. Anyway, today there isn’t any rush to get our tents down and ready to set off again, as we have our first two nighter of the trip. Every one eventually wakes and breakfasts, whilst others get ... read more
