After waking to the sound of others already up and getting ready to load up once more, I removed myself from my very uncomfortable sleeping position; rolled my sleeping bag up before getting my wash kit and a change of clothes and heading to the showers to really wake up. After returning, and packing my wash kit and clothes from yesterday away, I moved my kit from the container and put it behind the trailer ready to move on. As the others had their tents and kit to still pack up as well as breakfast, I decided to call work, speaking to Andi and Karl once more. I talked about the Tour since we last spoke. Once more it was great to speak to Andi and Karl, and left me in a great mood to start ... read more

Before we left Seattle, Steve, Annabel, Kylie, Scott and I headed over to the Pike Place Market mainly to look for the very first Starbucks shop in America, but having failed to find it, settled for a cooked breakfast in one of the cafes in the market. The weather was really overcast, and so foggy that the tops of wethe buildings around us are covered. Today’s drive was only a short one, 3 hours in all. Our destination was Vancouver, but before that, we had a slight detour in the shape of Todd’s folks. There has been talk over the past few days that his mum wanted to meet the Group and that Todd was trying to arrange a visit as we pass through. Todd’s parents met us at the door, and after being welcomed into ... read more

We left at 7.30am to head for Seattle. There was only one thing on this tour that Scott actually wanted to see and that was the Boeing factory in Seattle. Sadly the last tour of the day was at 3.30pm so we really needed to hit the road hard. On the way we passed a RV and Beetle being towed behind that had come off the freeway and travelled some distance off the road. The front of the RV was smashed up pretty bad, but it seemed no one was seriously hurt. We finally made Seattle in time, and Steve, Annabel, Kylie, Scott and I headed around the assembly lines of the 747’s, then the 777’s and then the 787’s. It was all secret work so no photos were allowed in the world’s largest building, which ... read more

We were leaving California behind and heading into Oregon. As soon as we hit the Beaver State, we stopped off at Ecola State Park, with this one being a beach. It was pretty immense with all the massive rocks just off shore and the driftwood lying on the completely flat beach. The tide was out, so the sand reached out for a while, up to the rocks, a good 300 feet from the top of the beach. Whilst on the beach we discovered a crab with all its legs snapped off, and Jess ran and ran forever along the beach. I almost thought about joining her on her second run, but didn’t. After leaving the beach, we had another shop for dinner tonight, and lunch at another beach, eating the two chickens we bought at the ... read more

We left the site at 9am to hike a wondrous redwood trail about 6 miles in total. Everyone was doing the hike, and quite quickly the group was spread out along the trail. I ended up walking at the back with Annabel, with the others quite a distance ahead of us, and we ended up having a chat alone for the first time on the trip. It was really cool to hang out with Annabel as we steadily walk the trail, with the amazing views round every bend of gigantic trees covering the sky high above. Annabel and I commented at one point that the place seemed like a scene from the last original Star Wars film (we found out later that we were correct!). Neither one of us had a care of keeping up with ... read more

Sadly we left San Francisco behind, heading over the Golden Gate one last time and off to Redwood National Park. The road quickly became winding and long, passing through large scarce areas and small towns. We ended up stopping in one of these small towns, Mendocino, which Todd told us it is most famous for some episodes of Murder, She Wrote. Although I have barely seen the show, as I look on at the town on the main road we pass up and down on looking for a spot to stop, I could picture it all. I was thankful for the stop, as the journey was over 6 hours long in all, and though I didn’t actually mind long drives, this one was a little too much. We parked up by a small field, and it ... read more

Today was our free day in San Francisco, and Mark and I took advantage by going for a bike tour of the city. From our hotel, we tried our best to locate the location of the bike tour shop, in the end walking in all directions around the block of the shop before finding it. When we entered the shop, one guide had just set a couple on their way, before we were seen to. After putting our deposits down, the guide arranged the appropriate bikes for us. Then a route was recommended for us to take, and pretty soon we were on our way, cycling down the block into the traffic, and it was then down to us to suffer amongst the cars, buses and trucks. At one point, one road suddenly split into 3 ... read more

When I woke up and headed to the toilet block I continued my search for the necklace with no success. Joanna and Kristina asked what I was doing and soon told me that a necklace was found last night by the ladies door and was last seen hanging up in there. Sadly when they had another look, it was now gone, and they told me that it was found last night, and that Sarah had apparently come to my tent to check, but got no response! D’oh! And with this disappointment we left Yosemite National Park behind and head to our first hotel stop on the second half – San Francisco! As we came into the city over the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate was visible to our right, with the city dead ahead of us. ... read more

An early start saw us head deep into the Park for a hike to Nevada Falls, which is the half way mark for a longer hike up to Half Dome. The walk was extremely long and hard, especially when it is up hill first, on a zigzag climb, oh and the main path is shut as there were some volunteers further up the route, clearing some fallen trees. After waiting around for almost half an hour so on the first bridge, Todd decided to find an alternative route, finding a nearby ‘cargo’ route, used for mule trains to haul ‘freight’ up the mountain. Having kept out of sight of any wardens or fellow climbers, we made our way up the route, taking in the views making it all worthwhile. We eventually made it to the Nevada ... read more

Our leave time today was 8am, and so we got to introduce the new guys to the ritual that was struggling to get through breakfast, packing our gear and tents up, loading up and ready to go by the designated time. The day’s destination ws Yosemite National Park, which meant the journey again was a long one, broken up by the shopping and lunch in a very empty car park of the San Louis reservoir. But first we had a brief walk around Monterey, which offered a lovely looking view of the bay, but not a lot else, apart from an area full of Californian sea otters as well as some endangered species of sea bird that Monterey is home to. As Steve, Scott and I headed along the pier to get closer to the rocks ... read more
