Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gili Meno December 6th 1990

Seeing SadieandOyvind's contemporary Gili Meno blog on the front page reminded me of a retro-tale, another self-indulgent reminiscence from a (relatively) innocent youth. The names listed have been changed to protect the guilty (and me from any potential lawsuits given the protagonists' careers). 16th December 1990. Two nights ago we’d met the solicitors from London: Alex and Gwynn, both bronzed and sleek from months of travelling, although looking amazingly smart on the back of this. Three bottles of banana wine at our hostel in Cakra, Lombok, and we were of the same opinion, that Meno sounded best. The smallest and least developed of the three Gilis, Meno is half a mile long and less wide. Covered in palms, encircled with fine white sands and Indonesia’s ubiquitous turquoise seas, it has no cars and few people: locals ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon August 24th 1990

24 August 1990 - Friday As the world races to war in the Middle East, I open this journal from Hong Kong. I am going to try and back fill the six or so days since I have been here in Hong Kong with the following pages. Today was to be very light as I am recovering from a very severe cold which has tried to keep me down for the past four days. I had planned on going to the top of Victoria Peak on the tram and returning, but instead I got to the top and decided to walk down, where I ended up at Hong Kong University, eventually catching a bus to Aberdeen. "The Peak", as it is known, is a little bit disappointing. To be fair, that was probably due to the ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo » Shinjuku October 27th 1989

Due to a fortunate happenstance I gained another chance to visit Japan through my job in Sydney. This was an unexpected but pleasant surprise as I settled back into Sydney life after spending two years overseas. I was lucky to get a job in an oil exploration company thanks to a friend, and it was a great feeling to get back on my feet financially after my travels. Life certainly takes many interesting twists and turns as the years roll by. My job in the company, dear reader, started in the print room but the manager asked if I would consider a job as a Technical Assistant, despite the fact I didn't possess a science background unlike the rest of my colleagues. I was offered the position which involved assisting the geologists and geophysicists in their ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta June 17th 1989

For our last day on Bali it was almost compulsory that we got ourselves down to the beach for some serious surfing. Some success, but there was an awful long way to go before any of us could call ourselves surfers. The flight was at some god-awful time of the morning again, so we were not planning on going to sleep that night. We thought we would make it a late night so we hit the bars and then a club. There was this one bar called SC's that was particularly popular. They had a bizarre promotion in that you got a free SC's tee shirt when you had downed a certain number of beers. Mike and Alan were going for it and were soon the proud owners of brand new tee shirts. Later when we ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Candi Dasa June 16th 1989

Spent much of the day in Candidasa, although there was not much to report according to my diary. We did need to complete some chores before we left for Australia, including checking for mail at the American Express office. Andy was the last to check, but the woman in the office had some trouble understanding the name 'Gifford'. In the end, he was getting frustrated and in a final, desperate attempt tried "Golf, Indigo, Foxtrot, Foxtrot, Omega, Romeo Delta". Most of the people in the office were very impressed and some amused, but we all felt sympathy for the poor woman. You could see the life drain out of her as she almost started to cry, and we felt duty bound to step in and try to help her out - but probably with five of ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud June 15th 1989

Ubud is one of the main cultural centres in Bali and was a must. The most famous attraction is Goa Ganja, otherwise known as the Elephant Cave. Before we were allowed in, we had to cover our legs, but there was someone on hand to lend us skirt-like pieces of material. We visited the cave in two groups so that someone would be keeping an eye on all our worldly good in the open-top staff cars. As Tiny and I were waiting for the others a coach-load of schoolgirls from Jakarata turned up and they all wanted to have their photographs taken with us. There we were in the main tourist location in Bali and the longest queue was one of girls waiting to have their pictures taken with us. Next, for some reason that I ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali June 14th 1989

We headed south again via a dormant volcano called Mount Abang. This was basically a small volcano in the blown-out crater of what was once a very big one. The journey up the rim of the crater was tough on the poor old staff cars and, of course, one of them broke down again. Coupled with that, the cars were open top and it started raining. We were drenched. Our ears were popping the whole way up and the top was literally in the clouds. As we were nearing the top, we came across a temple that was up a long flight of stairs. Up we went, but we soon regretted it - our legs felt like jelly and we were gasping for air, presumably due to the altitude and the lack of oxygen. It had ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali June 12th 1989

Bali is small enough that you can quite happily drive around it yourself so we hired a couple of cars to tour round. In keeping with what our budget would allow, the cars we ended up with were clapped-out heaps. They resembled the cars that Nazi generals used to drive around in during World War II. As we were heading north through the mountains one of them broke down on a corner going up a hill. As we were trying to turn it round so that we could jump-start it down the hill, a huge great lorry came round the corner, lights blazing, and we honestly didn't think we were going to make it. We then broke down again just as we arrived in Singaraja and someone who was passing by helped us out. It also ... read more
