5:50 pm 3-18-07 from Parasi in Nawalparasi Province, Nepal: Yeah! Finally made it to our final destination yesterday about 4:00 pm. Rode the public transportation for 7-1/2 hours because the land rover was still not working, the mechanic could not find the part. What a story that will be to tell everyone, unfortunately, not now, the electricity goes off in 10 minutes at 6:00 pm. We made it into town today from the Filters for Families headquarters on the outskirts (about 1 km out). Went with Linda to a village about 45 minutes away by minivan ride for a village information session for the water filters. I wish I could upload photos, but just getting logged into the system took 20 minutes, so maybe when we get back to Kathmandu on Thursday. Right now I am ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Madikeri March 18th 2007

Hi Everyone, After a short hiatus, I still have not got myself together enough to write another blog. I've been preparing, collecting notes and writing a whole lot in my personal journal. Unfortunately, I've left said journal in our hotel room and to post without the aid of my notes is impossible. We're disappearing into the jungle for a few days and an internet connection is doubtful but when I emerge, I promise to indulge you in my longest blog yet. Sarah seems to have kept you up to date on our travels so I won't repeat the details but she and I are both quite weary from all of the bumpy bus rides and overnight train expeditions we've endured in the past week or so. We've got the serenity of the rainforest and the spirituality ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Madikeri March 18th 2007

Ok, so when the Lonely Planet call's a place "beautiful", one generally tends to assume that one won't be stepping off the bus into mayhem and dirt. Ah, but then one would be assuming wrong. After a five hour, bone jarring, terrifying, wish-I-could-teleport-myself bus ride to Kottayam, twelve hours on a train (the only humane way to travel) to Managalore, overnight, where we had to beg our way into the AC compartment for a bed, and then another five hour body-rattling and bruising bus ride up to Madikkeri, we stepped off the bus glad to be on solid ground, and took our first look at the "beautiful" Madikkeri. Hmmmm. It was noisy, yes, dirty, yes, there was litter everywhere, yes, but "beautiful seemed a bit of a stretch. We started calling hotels only to find ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta March 18th 2007

One thing that I had not seen last time I was in Vietnam was the Mekong Delta so I decided that I would do a 2 day trip through the delta into Cambodia. Day one it was a mixed group with people on 1, 2 and 3 day trips all on the same bus, but luckily it was still quite a small group. It took about 3 hours to get to the river where we got on to a ferry type boat and headed to our first stop - a coconut candy factory! The day was basically made up of a series of stops at bizarre places, the next stop was a cafe where they had one bee hive and a kid on roller skates came out with a massive python round his neck. I decided ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta March 18th 2007

After 3 hours sleep we got up, packed, and began our 15 minute trek to the pier. Unlike me, hannah hates to be late, so we ended up getting there an hour early! We bumped into Oli, who was also early, so we all got breakfast before catching the boat to Ko Lanta. I was quite pleased to be getting away from phi-phi don. When we arrived I could see that Ko Lanta was completely different. There was a small town area with restaurants along the sea front and stalls, diving shops, travel agents and minimarts making up another 4 streets. There were so many touts at the pier we managed to bargain a good deal. Our hotel was a 5 minute drive from the town, down a long straight road. All memories of roughing it ... read more

I sit here trying to summarize an entire week… Where has the time gone? Oh yeh, sitting on so many buses it would make your head spin. And who would have thought that getting internet access would be so difficult. Stage 1 Sunday - The family arrived in Hong Kong China without much issue. Makayla handled the 17.5 hours on two planes very well. She probably handled it better then both mom and dad since she slept most of the time. After entering into Hong Kong we first needed to get processed so they could mark our passports showing that we had entered into the Country then off to find our luggage. With luggage and baby in tow we were off to catch a 45 minute bus ride into the old city of Hong Kong. ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island March 18th 2007

We had another week off in this last fortnight for Reading week apparently. Not much reading went on though I have to admit. It seems like we have more holidays here that Catrina Rowntree from getaway, but I'm not complaining. This week was Hong Kong rugby sevens which meant Hong Kong was full of crazy rugby fans when you went out at night. It did give a good atmosphere to some places though. Students also get in for free on the Friday which was good so me and Alex headed down there to watch a few games. Alex had tickets for Saturday and Sunday too cause he and played rugby for the HK Uni team and managed to scam tickets even though the thing had sold out in December, lucky bastard! The stadium did have ... read more

We were feeling a little stiff from yesterday's walk so decided to go to one of the Boh tea plantations. Boh was set up by a British guy (and is still owned by his family) and is the number one tea in Malaysia! We got the bus to the butterfly farm (which we did not go into) and then had to walk 2 kms to the plantation factory. The sheer size of the plantation was impressive as we walked to the factory - all on hills so we were wondering if they still hired people to pluck the leaves. Once we got there, we had a cuppa tea in the cafe (how can we not!) - we tried cinnamon tea which was quite nice actually! We then had a tour of the factory - there ... read more

Well it has been so long since I last wrote I bearly know where to begin. As I mentioned in my last blog we hired a driver to take us to the southern tip of India. Raman our driver has been phenominal. We have visited every temple and point of interest along the way which has been numerous. In Pondicherry we visited the temple and were each blessed by the Puja man and an elephant. Alex loves being blessed by elephants! While in Pondicherry we went to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, it was breathtaking and beautiful with flowers and plants. The love that filled this space felt so nuturing and filling to be in. I could have curled up and spent a week or so there. So very peaceful as they ask everyone to be silent ... read more
