I came to Vietnam expecting it to be a communist country, replete with propaganda-laden billboards, signs the government was watching your every move, a populace fearful of badmouthing the authorities for fear of the ultimate consequence. Instead the neon signs tempted passers-by with advertisements for Coca Cola and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Except for a handful of uniformed soldiers scurrying about from time to time, they was little sign that government was even present, let alone on the lookout for traitors to the Republic. As far as the eye could see, capitalism reigned supreme: coffee shops, fast food restaurants and photocopy outlets dotted the bustling streets of Saigon. So where was the great Communist victory? Yes, there were photos, paintings, busts, and statues of Ho Chi Minh, their savior in every government building. Yes, there were expansive, ... read more

Happy New Year everybody! I made it back safe and sound from yet another visit to a Communist country. Actually the biggest difficulty in Vietnam is rather mundane. It sounds bizarre to say this, but the most difficult thing to do in Saigon is cross the street. The rules of the game, learned when we were three years old, just don’t cut it when the roads are filled with motorbikes, bicycles, trucks, cars, scooters, and water buffaloes each going at their own pace and honking their horns for everyone to flee before their imminent arrival. Adding to the confusion, traffic lights are scarce and traffic rules are disobeyed with impunity. It soon became quite clear that whoever attempts to cross the street does so at his or her own risk. In this life or death struggle ... read more

I am finally in Vietnam, after all the times I wanted to come here in Japan but never quite made it! I am in Hanoi, the capital, at the moment. It is absolutely baking hot so I am dying to head to the beach right now. The city is really nice though with little winding streets, lakes and pagodas everywhere. Went to see the embalmed corpse of Ho Chi Minh this morning, so with Mao in Beijing, I almost have the set - just need Stalin and Lenin now! I had planned to walk to see Ho Chi Minh, but a motorbike tempted me to be lazy and get a ride - bad mistake. I honestly thought I was going to die. The drivers here are even more crazy than those in China and the rest ... read more

We have now worked our way down the Vietnam coastline and have enjoyed every moment. Hue was our first stop and our first experience of the sleeper bus. A slightly bizarre set up with appearing to be a double decker bus from the outside but in reality is three columns of bunk beds. The beds are narrow and short which was not such a problem for the Vietnamese who are all mini! The driver is not very considerate, beeping his horn all through the night so I wouldn't say we arrived in Hue totally refreshed. The town itself is small with a real backpackers hub which made it easy to meet people and a lot of fun. During the few days we spent here we did a boat trip along the Perfume River which was ok ... read more
