Our journey to Bangkok was expected to be smooth, however, we did hit a few bumps along the way but we cleared them with backpackers style. Firstly, we waited over an hour and a half for our first bus which when it finally turned up we wished we were waiting for the next one. Extremely grimy, broken air conditioning system and overall just an uncomfortable couple of hours. We pulled up in Poipet and believed we would be boarding a minibus with a guide to take us across the border. Upon enquiring about the location of our next bus we were disappointingly met with negative answers. A man told us 'not my company, take tuk-tuk'. Out of options we took the tuk tuk which was a little different again as it was like a side cart ... read more

After a slightly sad departure from Hong Kong we landed in Hanoi around 3:30 (we wimped out of a 24 hour bus/taxi/train journey). We had no cash, no accomodation, no idea how we were even going to leave the airport, so first stop was an ATM then the tourist information desk! We jumped in a taxi so we could head straight to an internet cafe and get ourselves a little more sorted. After spending the entire afternoon on the internet (finally on facebook again - yes!) we headed straight to Hanoi Backpackers Hostel, checked in, grabbed some food and planned exactly what we were actually going to do for our 2 and a half weeks in Vietnam. Our first day we made our way over to the Temple of Literature and Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum, navigating ... read more

This update is slightly later then anticipated but we have finally got round to making a new entry. So much has happened since we last communicated with you all that I think a very brief account focusing on the highlights is appropriate. I believe we were in Shanghai last which is now exactly three weeks ago. From there we went to Xi'an on another horrendous night train but I feel we are adapting. In Xi'an the higlight has to be The Terracotta Warriors, although the chinese massage is a close run second after the train journey. Unfortunately you cannot get as close to the Warriors as you would like to, visitors view them from above on a walk way that surrounds their pit; nevertheless they are very impressive, the detail is incredible. Next we flew to ... read more

One week in and we are finally beginning to adjust to the Chinese way of life. Our arrival in Beijing could have perhaps been smoother as the second interaction with a chinese man we had was the police as we were about to get in a black cab. This didn't particularly bother us as we didn't really know what was going on but we were directed to a licensed cab and arrivd swiftly in an extremely nice area of Beijng. As we hadn't technically left the airport premises we consider ourselves not to have been in China at the time so it doesn't count; apologies parents for not informing you of these details in previoius emails but we didn't want to worry you. Upon arriving in Beijin it was absolutely non-stop! On our first day we ... read more

The boat brought us to Phnom Penh at about 3pm and we met a lovely tuk tuk driver. He took us around a couple of guesthouses and we finally settled on Okay guesthouse. After checking in we went for a mooch around the city, stopping off at a restaurant along the riverside for a couple of fruitshakes. Phnom Penh is a busy city from the locals point of view but we found that, compared with Vietnam it wasn't so busy on the tourism front. The following day our tuk tuk driver picked us up and took us to see the S21 prison and the Killing fields from the Pol Pot regime. The prison is where they used to torture and question people but all but 14 ended up being taken to the Killing Fields where they ... read more

Asia » Vietnam May 5th 2001

We have now worked our way down the Vietnam coastline and have enjoyed every moment. Hue was our first stop and our first experience of the sleeper bus. A slightly bizarre set up with appearing to be a double decker bus from the outside but in reality is three columns of bunk beds. The beds are narrow and short which was not such a problem for the Vietnamese who are all mini! The driver is not very considerate, beeping his horn all through the night so I wouldn't say we arrived in Hue totally refreshed. The town itself is small with a real backpackers hub which made it easy to meet people and a lot of fun. During the few days we spent here we did a boat trip along the Perfume River which was ok ... read more
