We were b-aaad. How else can I describe the experience of having this kind of purchasing power??? 3 suits, 6 shirts, linen pants, car coat for Thai and 2 suits, silk suit, 4 shirts, pants, chinese jacket, 2 silk dresses and a hand painted Ao Dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) for Bianca. All custom made and tailored in 2 DAYS for far far less than one suit from Holt Renfrew!!! You want stress try explaining hand stitched lapels and coin pockets in your jacket pockets to a Vietnamese woman who is wheeling and dealing with 5 different customers at the same time. Na, our tailor, was on fire. She was not afraid to tell you if she didn't think something would suit you, and would bark orders to her "people" in rapid speed. She had a memory ... read more

This trip has been about more than a homecoming and vacation but, a chance for Bianca and I to break free from our daily routines and learn more about each other and the world in different situations. NO matter who you are and no matter where you come from the lowest common denominator for us all is that we are slaves to our basic human needs. Eat, sleep, comfort and use of the restroom. The things I've recently seen and done have allowed me to understand how true all aspects of this sentiment really is. When scaredy cat, Thai challenges a Mekong Delta spider the size of a CD rom, that moves faster than the human eye, for use of a "primative" washroom (not for myself I might add;) you know its on. #1 Travel is ... read more

The last few days we spent in Hanoi included a trip to see the Thang Long water puppet theatre just on the edge of Hoan Kiem Lake and around the corner from our hotel. I’d seen the show before and knew the kids would like it. Will was especially thrilled with some of the animal puppets. Viv thought it was just “ok”. The puppeteers are behind a screen working the puppets in front. The whole thing takes place in a pool of water. On the side is a group of musicians and singers. Sorry, I didn’t take the camera, but next time I will. It’s a great folk art from the rice paddies of Vietnam. After a week Hanoi, we succeeded in doing what we had planned to do, namely meet the people at the university, ... read more

After spending a couple of days catching up with Roxy and Mark in Mui Ne, we felt that we still hadn't really experienced much of Vietnam, and indeed didn't really feel that we were in Vietnam - or the Vietnam we had expected to experience at least. So we jumped on a bus to Nah Trang to see what that was like. We drove into Nah Trang city and found a guesthouse called the Perfume Grass that had lovely rooms for the bargain price of $10 a night. The guesthouse was right by the seaside and the long stretch of beach that attracts not only foreigners but many Vietnamese tourists. We did our usual walk around the city to get a feel for the place, and found a nice place to have some of the local ... read more

Hanoi, Vietnam. There are loads of 'bia hoi' (fresh beer) joints that sell really good draught beer that's brewed without preservatives... the beers cost 7 pence (yes, seven!) per glass! Needless to say, we spent rather a lot of our time at such establishments, and due to the lack of preservatives, the hangovers were not to bad either... hurrah!!!... read more

After getting on the crowded bus at Mui Ne, we settled in for the long bus ride to Nha Trang. The previous days of pool and beach time would have to sustain us for the next 5 hours. As we drew closer to Nha Trang we examined our itinerary and found that we were cutting it close with our dates and our flexibility was nil. After about 2 seconds thought we arrived in Nha Trang, at 8 pm only to stay on the bus for another 12 hrs to Hoi An. Beaches vs. shopping the age old battle. The Open Bus tours run up and down Saigon non-stop and usually have 2-3 drivers on rotation. Red eye express and if you are familiar with this particular stretch of "highway" and the Vietnamese bus driver penchant for ... read more

We've been here for a few days now, spent 3 nights in the city and did a couple days in Halong Bay (write about there in another blog). We've added photos to the last Bangkok blog as well for you to check out. We arrived the night of the 28th (Saturday) on a late flight. Eight of us non-Asians ended up congregating together after the baggage claim, all kind of looking around to figure out where we go, where we get money, and turning away the touts trying to offer us rides. We ended up getting a taxi with an English couple. They had actually booked a room at a hotel so we figured we'd just try to stay at the same one since it was nearly 10pm. Kind of dodgy getting a taxi, and we ... read more

We got a coach down to Hoi An today via Danang. Our new hotel is fantastic aswell and it has a pool!! Hoi An is a nice place and the main thing here is tailors. you can get absolutely anything made to fit here and they have copies of catalogues to make you anything or you could bring your own design. It's famous for suits but i'll not be needing a business suit for at least the next year so not bothering with that. I did get a dress, pair of cropped trousers and shorts made to measure though for a grand total of US$30. The boys and a couple of the girls got suits too. Yesterday was Liz's 26th birthday so after shoppping we went out for a meal and some drinks. the bars here ... read more

We arrived right in the middle of the backpacker area of Saigon (as the locals still refer to it) in the early evening giving us enough time to check into a guesthouse and get some food before getting some much-needed sleep. The Pham Ngu Lao area (still no idea how you say it!) is definitely geared up to tourists - plenty of western food and crafts shops - but has it's fair share of locals enjoying the cheap beer so it's a pretty nice atmosphere. On our first full day here we decided to visit the War Crimes Museum which is an undeniably one-sided look at the Vietnam war (it used to be called the Musem of Chinese and American War Crimes) and doesn't give a particularly good overview of the war, but it has some ... read more

After a good nights sleep and very long showers to wash away the trauma of the 30 hour bus journey (to quote Whitters - if she ever has children, she doubts they'll be as beautiful as that shower was) we set off to explore the sights of Hue. The first port of call on our whistle stop tour was the Citadel, The Imperial Palace and Forbidden Purple City. As Hue used to be the capital of Vietnam, this was the King and his five hundred + concubines' residence and was a very interesting place to visit, especially as we splashed out on a tour guide who explained everything to us. There are still some original sites there, including the throne room but unfortunately a lot of the Citadel was wiped out during the war and our ... read more
