Christmas and New Years were pretty good in Vietnam! On Christmas Eve, Marta and I delivered some presents to the neighbors (boxes of fruit). They were touched by the gesture and invited us over for a meal. It was unbelievable. First we sat on a small porch in a three room house - the porch was overflowing with broken fans, tools, light fixtures, etc. If we had been in the states, I would have associated it with a home of a meth addict - clearly that wasn't the case here. We had a very humble meal of shrimp and clams, and some beer. Then, we went across the street for a larger meal with our other neighbors. They had maybe five or six dishes, three of which were from dog!! (Thit cho). IT was SENSATIONAL!! Seriously ... read more

Okay, it's Tuesday I think. And it's 12 hours from NYC which means I did not have to reset my watch. Which is a good thing. Otherwise -- why did I not know that the alphabet would be roman? Makes things a little too easy, not saving me, however, from getting extremely lost this a.m. Ho Chi Minh is HECTIC if not total chaos. Must be 5x louder than NYC. Half the traffic is on motorbikes, some bicycles, rickshaws. Old women wearing those hard triangular hats. Otherwise, the women wear these beatiful long silk caftanish things over flowy silk pants. I forgot that the thing that really terrifies me about travelling in big cities like this is crossing the street. Twice old ladies in hats (see above) have taken pity on my striken face and taken ... read more

Hi, It appears that the most difficult daily task in Ho Chi Nin City (Saigon) is crossing the street. Much more difficult than doing this in a big city in India. Lots of scooter drivers that drive and drive and do not stop. At the beginning in our pathetic trials to cross the street, local people helped us and showed how to do it: you just cross, the scooter drivers will divert eventually and manage not to override us, somehow... Second difficult task is the language. Most of the people don't know English. But even when they know, their accent is very difficult to understand. And the other way around: it is very difficult for them to understand our accent. So sometimes I use writing which is very helpful. After one week in Thailand where no ... read more

Saigon is completely different from the rest of Vietnam. It is cosmopolitan and modern, whilst the rest is playing a rapid game of catch up. The pubs and restaraunts are busy pumping out Razorlight and other Indie hits, whilst old western blokes enjoy a beer with their pretty young Vietnamese "girlfriends". You can buy anything you want here it seems, drugs, sex and booze are openly offered in the area we stay. In Saigon christmas is a big celebration and an excuse to party. I celebrated by getting engaged to my girlfirend Leanne! It was a nervous moment but i summoned up the courage to ask her and it put the seal on lovely xmas day. In contrast to our happiness on xmas i felt a great sorrow after visiting the War Remnants Museum. Here is ... read more

I decided that I would spend my birthday, Christmas and New Years Eve in Asia. I flew into Singapore, and had about an 8 hour stopover on my way to Vietnam. This wasnt so bad, as the airport has a lot to see and do. But after the first few hours, I was beginning to regret not going out to see the town for a while. Once I was in Saigon, Hong met me at the airport and took me to my hotel. We went out for something to eat, and pretty much just chilled around town. The next day, we went to a few markets, and had some lunch with some of her friends, who we really nice. That night we went to the club at the Sheraton Hotel. I booked a trip for the ... read more

Yo! Buster Lovers everywhere. Yes, Joe and I are sitting in beautiful downtown Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon to the lower grades) and missing the third G1 - Tez - that had to return to Singapore last Sunday. This message is just to inform you that the entire trip will be put on the blog upon our return home. It makes sense if you think about it. When you are in the upper echelons of the Buster hierachy you just don't have time to sit around internet cafes updating blogs. No, we are simply too time poor for such pursuits when our days are spent eating breakfast, drinking beers, buying meals, walking around a bit, visiting souvenir shops and fomenting the revolution in third world countries. A QUICK OVERVIEW Thailand was well and truly Busted wide ... read more
