Like a flash it was the weekend and time to escape the city for a couple of days. We boarded a ferry and headed up the river to the beach resort of Vung Tau. The journey was pleasant although we hit some heavy waves as we got nearer to our destination. As each one hit the boat you would have though it had hit a rock, but this seemed normal to the other passengers (apart from one or two children who gave a yelp with each wave). On arrival we went across the road to Ned Kellys. This is an Australian themed bar where the walls are decorated with the signatures and messages of Australian service men, or families of, many of which had been deployed to Vietnam during the war and had returned again later. ... read more

One of the longest rides to date...Plans were to stop at Ho Coc about 230 kms from Ca Na but after a breathtaking cross country ride east to the coast and then some of the best coastal scenery to date as we headed south to get to Ho Coc we were somewhat underwhelmed with the acommodation options...There was an "eco Resort" that looked like a UK garden centre and a tired looking resort geared totally to Vietnamese tourists that was like a collection of school bicycle sheds full of hundreds of deckchairs set at right angles to the beach...Strange!... Consequently we pressed on to Vung Tao another 70 odd kms further on and directly south of Ho Chi Minh City where we stayed in a central hotel called Petro House..Vung Tao is busy, full of expats ... read more

I had asked Mark (the father of the german family I know) what their plans were for the weekend. He said that they would probably go to Vung Tau, the place I'd been with my friend the weekend before. I was invited to come along and we decided to go by motorbike! I left the house at 8 am on Saturday morning, headed to their place and left just a few minutes later. The ride was a lot of fun (I felt so vietnamsese :)), but also exhausting (it took 2 1/2 hours!) Gero (the 16 year old son) and I traded off driving and I enjoyed it a lot. Mark had heard of this place which was about 10 km before Vung Tau and used to be the summerresidence of the king. This is where ... read more

We are in the southern most part of Vietnam now in a city called Vung Tau. I will go back and start with the past few days. We had a mostly uneventful night. Watched a movie on TV and I had that bath I was dreaming of. We were awoken at 6am by jackhammers in the torn-down building next to us. We gave up after a couple more hours and went to find our free breakfast. it had been sitting there since probably 5 am and was stone cold. i had some chow mein style noodles and hard as rock bread. the tea was good though. we ended up booking an overnight bus to Da Nang at 6pm so we had the whole day to kill. We walked around doing some window shopping since it is ... read more

This is my first entry about Vietnam. I've lived in Saigon from 1996 to 2000 and still spend a lot of time here every month. So why an entry now...simple, it's my 35th birthday. This is not a big deal, 35...But this was an amazing 13th December. A simple reason, it's the first time Tiffany is meeting Ma'ri...and it's my first birthday in years where I've got all my love ones together with me. So if you are waiting for the big party, it's not today, not here...but that's also coming! No pics of the traditional Vietnam. We just stay in one of my prefer little hideaway in Vung Tau, 75 minutes south of Saigon by ferry. We spend time around the swimming pool, enjoying family time and good food. Simple pleasures, but those are so ... read more

Hey folks, Not that we like to be reminded as to how little time we have left (ahem, we mean we miss you dearly and can't wait to arrive home to colder weather - is there at least skiing yet?)....but we thought we'd give you the highlights of what we've been up to lately and before we're home where blogging may be redundant. Our first (and there have been many) arrival in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) was fairly quiet - took care of business (tickets and such) and found a great place to stay - down a little alley with a family. They occupy about 200 sq ft - and us, not so much less. After the quiet bits we returned home to find expats, locals and our hosts drinking beer and (awful) rum on the ... read more

August 31, 2008 I wasn’t feeling particularly well this weekend but was feeling better than throughout the week when I was offered this opportunity to go with some new volunteers, John, Andrea, and Andrew to Vung Tau beach about a 2hr bus ride away from Saigon. But we would not be going by bus but rather a hydrofoil, which sounded pretty cool. Anyway here was the Vung Tau plan: 8:00am - Wake up 9:00am - Arrive at harbour to buy Hydrofoil tickets 10:30am - Board Hydrofoil and travel to Vung Tau Noon - Arrive at Vung Tau Noon - 4:00pm - Go site seeing around Vung Tau and maybe hit the beach and go home 4:30pm - Hydrofoil back to Saigon 6:00pm - Arrive in Saigon The plan was flawless for a day excursion to the ... read more

So we find ourselevs in local vacation spot called Long Hai. It is a place where Vietnamiese people from Saigon go on holiday. There was not really much going on there so we decided to leave after one day, but as always there was an adventure or two to be had. We go wandering looking for dinner around appearantly everything closes very early in Long Hai. We did get lucky enough to find a party of 110 immigartion officers who invited us to join the festivities. It was great fun. They kept filling our glasses with Heineken and giving us grilled shrimp, cuddlefish, and fish along with rice soup. Everybody wanted to sit and have a conversation with the Americans. At one point I was having a conversation with a guy and his 2 sons. He ... read more

I am hiding from a monster bug right now. Thu just walked out from the bathroom area and said that there was a giant cockroach above the sink. She asked Matthew to take care of it, but after looking at it he said that he has a policy when confronted with bugs that could reach back and punch him in the nose - live and let live. I’m hoping having all the lights on will scare it into a little hole. Today was nice - the first day we could sleep in! We still got up before 8AM, but it was great to be able to sleep until we woke up on our own. This morning a large chartered bus arrived to take us to the beach, but first we had to go to Thu’s grandma’s, ... read more
