so we're driving along the road from hoi an to hue. my uncle in the front seat, mom, aunt huong and me jammed in the back seat of a tiny car...but hey! who's complaining. i'm not on the open tour bus right? so i ask mom if she can ask the driver if we can stop in danang on the way to hue. the driver says no...it's 2 km off the road. i ask mom to re-translate and "ask politely again" that i am strongly suggesting or actually requesting or actually saying that we must stop in danang on the way to hue. my goodness....did he not understand that i'm in vietnam and i MUST go to china beach, danang where the wave in apocolypse now was apparently located + a short clip from the recent ... read more

i must start this entry on a positive note: the rice fields. the first time i experienced the country side of vietnam. meditative. calming. soothing. watching the blades of grass float with the gentle caresses of the wind....epic. cannot be explained in words. my heart was full. fully in the moment. THAT was the highlight of a 13 hour bus ride. yes folks, 13 hours! for those of you thinking about taking the open bus ANYWHERE in vietnam....did the travel books mention that even though the price of the bus is probably 10 times less than the train....there is no bathroom on the bus, the drivers hardly speak english, and they seldom stop for bathroom breaks or food breaks.....depends on when they have those needs! and so my first major "lost in translation" moment in vietnam. ... read more

Multiple Good-byes Brit & Hannah to Nha Trang Now my turn to go. I can't believe that the day has come that I will be leaving Tam Ky to continue my adventures. Brit and Hannah were supposed to catch the train around 9AM this morning. We all headed to the train station to send those two off. Then we find out that the train is delayed until 11. Karen headed back home but Sarah and I stayed at the station even though it was pretty uneventful. Just say this, I helped Brit knit a few rows of her scarf and that was about as exciting as it got! Then we found out that the train was further delayed until NOON so Mr. Hoa and Mrs. Hanh brought us back home so that they could also pick ... read more

Photos a plenty! 500 plus megabytes Click happy Bonnie I spent about three hours today getting my photos downloaded and then burned onto disk and also getting copies for the others. It took a while but at least Karen was around to help pass the time. Pretty uneventful day today. Just hung around this afternoon doing nothing in particular since I have already finished up most of my packing. Last night's dinner was delish but I don't think our guests enjoyed it as much as we did but they were all very polite and I think they appreciated the effort. Since I didn't do much to help in terms of cooking up the dinner, I was on salad prep and dish duty/clean up. That's okay by me though! Hmm, Bridget and Hannah will be catching a ... read more

Thank goodness for air con! Karen and I have had our room cooled down to iceberg conditions the last couple of days because it has been super hot out. Internet was super duper slow yesterday so I didn't bother making an entry into my blog. Instead I spent the afternoon laughing up a storm as Karen wrote a song in my honour. A little evidence that the two of us were a bit bored! lol Who would of thought singing about shoe bags, calamine lotion and knitting could be so funny??? The haiku just kept coming to me this morning lying in bed that I have not one but two in regards to yesterday afternoon's silliness. Lazy afternoon Karen creates silly songs Laughter in the air. Creative Karen Writing a song about me! Laugh-out-loud good times! ... read more

Feeling really hot. Toss and turn. Weird dreams...real weird. Kick my blanket off. Yep, I think every five minutes I've been making comments about how hot it is. I was teaching at the Vocational Training Centre this morning and was just standing up at the board teaching when I feel a bead of sweat forming on my neck...that's how hot it is right now. Thank goodness for the ceiling fan to get the air circulating. We do have air con in our room but I don't think it is quite necessary at the moment although it would be good to put it on to keep the mossies at bay. Anyway, with the heat and extra tossing and turning I'm guessing it has brought on extra weird dreams that I can remember. All I'll say is it ... read more

Another hot and steamy day in Tam Ky. I was at the Baby Orphanage this morning. The kids have been different the last couple of weeks. A few of them were into the colouring that we brought over for them to work on and then it was just playing around the yard. Nothing too exciting. At one point Hannah took off for a bit to go buy some baby formula with some of the money her and Brit raised before coming to Viet Nam. Okay, I think I can hold down the fort. After a while the kids lost interest with the colouring and slowly left the room. Then I was just playing with about four of them. I sort of felt like a human jungle gym when they all wanted to be carried and the ... read more

NOT! Monday plans foiled No dancing at the Khach San Why? We do not know. Karaoke fun. I will sing but no mic please! Confirmed..I can't sing Well, our plans for a night out dancing were put out of sorts since there was no Monday night dancing at the Tam Ky Khach San. You mean I put on lipstick and brushed my hair for no reason?? The six of us, our interpreter Phuong, Mr. Lanh (the doctor that works downstairs) and his friend, Mr. Binh (the security guard), Mr. Hoa (our cook) and Mrs. Hanh all went to Karaoke instead. Mr. Hoa was really getting into the singing..could have been influenced by the drinking beforehand! The selection of English music was huge and it took a while to pick a song. I have confirmed two things. ... read more

Not feeling all that inspired today... Thesaurus needed. Improved Haiku on the way?? No promises though. :) I haven't had a very inspiring day today. We went to the Baby Orphanage this morning and things seemed a little off yet again. Then this week we started the extra session at the Baby Orphanage so I was there again. I really felt like having a nap when I was there! I don't know if it is coincidence or what but we did have another Vietnamese language lesson this afternoon which could help explain some of the lack of motivation. haha Yet again, I wasn't feeling the most motivated so I brought my knitting to class! I know, probably not a good thing but I figured falling asleep in class would be worse! After the afternoon session at ... read more

I had an exciting weekend here in Tam Ky. Yesterday at Phu Ninh Lake..one of Vietnam's best kept secrets! Then from there it was just a really fun-filled weekend. Let's see, during dinner we watched “50 First Dates” again. Hannah is really getting to know the entire script for this movie! We then headed down to the internet. Not sure where Mr. Binh the security guard was but the gate was locked so we had to jump the fence to get out. Good to know we had been locked up nice and secure. Sarah, Hannah and I just hung outside with the internet boy..I think someone has a crush but I can't say. HAHA Then it was to the corner for Karen to enjoy her beer and for the lot of us to play some cards. ... read more
