Hoi’An... An idyllic mix of Asian and Continental. Pastel coloured houses line palm-fringed streets. Row upon row of cloth shops sharking for your custom. Myself, Sarah, Colton and Rob arrived here yesterday, due south from Hue. The beach just up the road, days can be filled with kitting yourself out with a new wardrobe, tailor made to your specifications, and I hope lots of lazing around in the sweet sunshine. It’s hot, it’s beautiful, it’s cheap. We had to bid our farewells to the Swedes, for now at least. Visa issues. Until we meet again in Laos... ... read more

Hey everyone, Our trip to Vietnam has been great. We arrived in Hanoi and decided to get the night train all the way to Saigon. The trip should take 30 hours but the train kept breaking down! We ended up getting off the train halfway there in a place called Danang. From here we travelled to our first destination, the beautiful town of Hoi An. Hoi An is so pretty and charming. We stayed in a really nice hotel, with hot watter, hurray! In Hoi An every second shop is a tailors. The clothes are very cheap to get made, I got a really nice jacket made and Liam even got a pair of Puma runners made! We rented bicycles and took a trip to the beach. The cycle there was lovely, really scenic. On the ... read more

Dalat/Mui Ne/Nha Trang It's been quite a hectic couple of weeks; the weather in Vietnam has been less than spectacular so there's been a lot of moving. If it keeps raining I may be headed to Thailand/India earlier than I thought. Dalat is the "kitsch capital" of Vietnam, a European-style city founded by frenchmen up in the mountains. Although going somewhere cold (or at least somewhere where I could maybe put my fleece to use) seemed like a quaint idea, the novelty quickly wore off as along with the cooler temperatures came rain. The city itself was also nothing particularly special; it did have winding, Spanish-feeling streets, and some amusing kitsch crap, but really it was a city much like any other, and I definately did not fall in love with it. Outside the city, however, ... read more

Hi all, Well last entry was from Hoi An, the little old colonial city of South Vietnam. We grabbed a bus from Hoi An to Hue (about 4 hours drive) and it cost the awsome amount of 3 bucks US ..... I'll have to get a second job when I get home : All the travel info we have read about this trip stated it was the most majestic trip over the mountains. We guess what. They have constructed a huge tunnel through the mountain range and now all you see is concrete, road and tunnel. (Took us about 10mins to get thru so it's a fair distance). But I suppose it did save us many hours on the journey. But then on saying that, the bus conveniently broke down at a Cafe on the way, ... read more

a stop off at Mui Ne is the perfect way to break up the long bus ride to Ho Chi Minh City (formally Saigon). also, we had heard that the sea breeze in combination with the mountain range protected this city from the rain... wrong! the rain seems to be following us... this town is spread out along the coast, and everything is very spaced out. soooo, we decided to rent a motorbike! it was quite funny, and they were not the least bit concerned that we had NO idea how to work/drive it. but hey, worked out. the first day we only had a few hours of daylight, so we 'motoed,' as they say here, to a red river in search of 'fairy springs.' we didn't have much info on getting there, but when the ... read more

Leaving Hoi An, we made the bus wait 5 minutes while the last shop we ordered from motorbiked the final touches on a dress and silk robe to us at the station. actually, we were waiting on another delivery by bike as well, but we had maxed out the driver's patience. opps. do you expect any less from us? stacy and jessie = the definition of procrastination. but we wanted out of that city b/c if we didn't leave then, it would mean another 24 hours in the land of shopping. bad news. so we got on, and said we would figure it out later. ahh yes, we get to sit next to eachother - alway a plus, but all of our foot space was occupied by our new wardrobes. so we settled in and switched ... read more

Mui Ne is a quaint little town along the coast of Vietnam, well known for its numerous tailor shops, beautiful narrow streets, and white sand beaches. We had a 12 hour bus ride from Nah Trang to Mui Ne. It was crazy, but went by in a flash because we are so used to these bus rides now. The road was extreemly narrow and windy, about 1.5 lanes wide, and on the side of a cliff that fell (a really really long way) down to the ocean. It was dark out, and the driver used the typical technique of roaring around blind corners while laying on the horn. As the g-force throws us to one side of the bus around the blind corner, the only thing we can think about is the potential outcome if a ... read more

The final day in Saigon. A trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels is organised. Never before have I felt like such a tourist. Getting an air-con bus, a tour guide and rushed. It just seemed against our travel plan. I guess some tourist things have to be done. We stop on the way to look at rubber trees. I thought to myself, "hmm wow" (With a large amount of sarcasim) We move on and arrive at the complex. We are hearded like cows into a small video room. The poor VHS quality makes me laugh. We only get 5 minutes before we are hearded again out the front door to the gate. "We watch later, we watch later" Another video room greets us. "I think that was the middle part" Rohan says. Another 5 minutes passes. ... read more

Hey All, Well it's day 11 and it's feels like we have already been out Australia for a month. We have traveled some distance, and seen some great new sites. Yesterday we arrived in Hoi An, about 1000km north of Saigon. A 16 hour trian journey brought us here. The train was great, I'm glad we purchased the first class tickets as we had an airconditioned sleeper carridge, with a room shared by only 2 other people. The trains are about 3 times the price of a bus in Vietnam, but they are safer and much more comfortable. (yes I know, Die hard backpackers here !!) After leaving Saigon at 10.30pm, and a bit of yelling from a train guard (Which we had no idea what he was saying). I think Cam was in my bed ... read more

After Saigon, we took a 5 hour bus ride north to the coast of Vietnam. We will stay on the coast for the next 2 weeks until we arrive in northern Vietnam- where we will fly down to Bangkok. The Coast is full of beautiful beaches along the South China Sea. Our first stop was a tiny little town called Mui Ne. Mui Ne is generally a fishing village, where locals float in small wooden boats shaped like cereal bowls. They all awake at about 530am to put their nets out into the water, and then around 8am they are on the streets selling their fresh catch. The first thing we did when we arrived in Mui Ne (besides escaping the swarming Tuk Tuk drivers) was go to the beach. The sand was beautiful and soft, ... read more
