This trip is shaping up to be very strange indeed! Arrived in Nha Trang at about 8.30pm. The journey was slow going but the bus was quite empty so it was a reasonably comfortable ride. We immediately set about finding a room, but due to there being a Vietnamese national holiday on everywhere was fully booked. After traipsing around for about an hour we finally found a place. Nha Trang is a lot larger than I was expecting. It is a very busy seaside town and is very popular among Westerners and Vietnamese alike. Because of this it is very touristy and to be honest not my kind of place. The beach itself is lovely, but unfortunately the sea is very cold so we didn’t do much swimming ( I know, what a pansy!). In fact, ... read more

Hey guys... man it's been a while. Where do I start... Made it to Ho Chi Min city (aka Saigon) earlier this week. I had very good experiences there... the people that ran my guesthouse were very kind - they took me out for Vietnamese food every night! And one night the daughter took me, two Canadian boys and a English guy to a club.... it was pretty cool, until it closed down at 12:30!! We were just getting started, but oh well. Saw the Cu Chi tunnels just outside of HCMC too... the real ones were amazing. They has some that they widened for tourists, and I was getting a little anxious in those... I can't imagine living in those. Nobody should have to do that. After three days in Saigon, went to Mui Ne. ... read more

Hi everyone sorry it has been awhile since any updates but the internet here is very average. We arrived in Nha Trang and it is just perfect, if you imagine a tropical isalnd that is what it is like, crystal clear water, reefs and the best fish you have seen. I went scuba diving and it was fantastic the best thing I have done here yet, got to pat a Moray eel, I wanted to do it again but time wouldnt allow it. We are staying it a resort right on the beach, Ana Mandara the best service and location, you just sit on the beach under an umbrella and when you want somthing you wave a yellow flag and the waiters come running, I felt a bit guilty doing it the first time but you ... read more

The vomit bus Today I took a coach from Dalat to Nha Trang. Unfortunately the slighly (extremely) agressive driving and the very (VERY!) winding roads caused an almost constant stream of passengers to be coachsick. The actual effect was comical, as no sooner had the sound of one persons retching finished but another seemed to start. Thank god they were all down the front tho, while I was sat safely at the back! Vietnamese Coffee With very few exceptions vietnamese coffee is served VERY stong, brewed in a cup top filter. Ask for it white and a third of the cup is taken up with condensed milk. You only get a small cup, but thats enough. This stuff is strong, and very sickly. Black coffee is only for the real coffee lovers - and you may ... read more

Luckily the mode of transport down to the coast was more comfortable than on the way up and we arrived at Nha Trang by early afternoon and checked into a guesthouse complete with air-con, sky tv and minifridge - pretty luxurious compared to most places we've stayed at so far. Nha Trang is a pretty busy and extremely commercialised beach resort which is popular with both foreign and Vietnamese tourists, but does have a really nice beach which is where I spent most of the first full day in the town. Although popular, the beach is long enough so that it's still far from crowded. As a tourist destination it was extremely easy to find a decent place to watch the England v Paraguay match in the company of a fair number of English people as ... read more

Sunday 11th June Paul - A late night once again with Argentina Vs Ivory Coast getting a watch. Reasonable game, much better than England Vs Paraguay. Even the Vietnamese were not impressed with the English, one guy describing them as "fucking horrible, I betted 20,000 dong on them to win by more than two!". Pretty much spot on for someone who's first language definately isn't English. Peter Crouch should not be in the team for the next game, he just cannot play at International Level. And Lampard and Gerrard as a centre midfield partnership just does not work but I think Sven is oblivious to this. Anyway... Seems like Vietnam is completely football crazy! Big screens on the beach and everyone seems to be playing football at every opportunity.Which makes for a cracking atmosphere for ... read more

What's up! After a couple of day trips in and around Saigon to see all the touristy stuff, we jumped a (terrrrrible) night bus to Nha Trang, and have been chilling out for a few days, planning the next move. Nha Trang caught me a bit off guard. I knew that it's the most popular municipal beach in Vietnam, for both foreigners and Vietnamese people, but I was still blown away by how crowded it was when we arrived. The beach was PACKED with people. Granted it was a Saturday and the crowds have since thinned out, but I was still stunned to see how many people were on the beach. It's a little too busy for my tastes, so we've booked a short bus trip to Mui Ne, a more laid back beach with much ... read more

So it's been a week now in Nha Trang and I'm a little concerned that I'll never leave. I actually have no choice but to leave in the next couple of days because A) I only have 2 weeks left in Vietnam and really don't want to miss out on Sapa in the north and B) I may have jaundice soon if I don't stop the binge drinking. Sophie and I arrived after a 9 hour overnight bus trip from Saigon. I took gravol and woke up after 8 hours of sleep! impressive eh? I was very happy that the night buses agree with me because the way I see it, it's like one night's accomodation included in the bus fare and it saves a day of travelling, so night buses are the way to go. ... read more

Hi All I'm just back from 2 days of bliss on Whale Island. Since the last time i wrote the group did a long train journey from Hoi An to Nha Trang (10 hours!!). We kept ourselves amused by creating a pub quiz for the rest of the group - Ross and I being the quizmasters - i think we did a pretty good job! We didn't get to stay in Nha Trang for long which was such a shame as it looked so much fun - definitely one of the better places to party (we still managed a quick bucket of cocktails though!) Whale Island is a very small private resort with about 20 or 30 beach bungalows so there were only a few other people there who weren't on our tour. It was bliss ... read more
