The main attractions of the coastal town of Nha Trang are the monumental Cham Towers and white sand beaches. This area is also known to have the best coastal climate in Vietnam. The port was established in 1924 and became a popular recreational spot for American sailors during the Vietnam War. Nha Trang’s earlier existence goes back to the Cham Kingdom, a civilization originated with the migration of Malay-Polynesians. The Cham people are one of Vietnam’s ethnic minorities with their own language. In their unique culture the women select their husbands and give their property to their daughters rather than their sons. Over the years the Cham have acclimated to the ways of the Vietnamese while at the same time retaining many of their ancient customs. The two tiered city of Nha Trang offers both a ... read more

Today we had a tour of the ship’s bridge. It is totally electronic similar to a 747 plane. They control every aspect of the ship. They have double redundancy in terms of equipment yet they still plot the course manually. No more giant steering wheels…it is the size of a go cart steering wheel. There are always two navigators on the bridge looking at sea for ships. They say that the human eyes are the best judge to what is in front of the ship. Small wooden boats do not show up well on radar. They also control all doors on the ship electrically. They can lock all doors for fire safety, water containment and for security reasons. When asked about security measures they didn’t say but it seems as thought they are fully armed to ... read more

Stepping off the bus in Nha Trang was like stepping into an oven. We left the cooler weather behind in the highlands and back on the coast things are salty and sweaty once again. Luckily for us we found a sweet room - it's nice and big with a balcony overlooking the road so we can people watch in the evenings, and all the smells from the nearby restaurants waft up and entice us out to dinner. It's great. Being unable to dive (Corb has asthma), we've mainly been relaxing here in Nha Trang which has been a nice change from being so busy lately. Luckily for us the food is fantastic with cheap eats on the street and delicious fresh seafood available almost everywhere. Today we explored a bit, starting at the Cathedral which was ... read more

Its been a while since my last blog so loads to tell. I left Siem Reap for Phnom Penh on the 11th March where we stayed for a night before departing for Vietnam on the Saturday. The bus journey to the dock, which was supposed to take an hour instead took 3. Half way through the journey the bus swirved to miss a truck and hit a huge pot hole sending the bus off the road narrowly missing a rather large tree and finishing perched on the edge of a hill. The steering cable was broken and the axle twisted so we waited in the middle of nowhere whilst a few of the locals and the bus driver tried to fix it. We finally got to the dock 2 hrs late and boarded the barge ... read more

I got my hair cut by a hooker the other day. I don’t know why I always end up with interesting haircut stories when I travel. I walk into this “barbershop” and there are 5 girls sitting around. They probably ranged in age from 17-25. They were all very, very cute…and extraordinary friendly. I said I needed a trim, and so one of them sat me down and started cutting my hair. In the mirror that I was facing I could see the other girls trying to catch my eye and smile and giggle. After about 5 minutes another girl comes out of the back room, followed by a 60-year-old western man. He saw me and immediately shifted his eyes away and rushed out of the building. This was my first clue. Then about 5 minutes ... read more

Long time no blog. Sorry, if you were upset. No problem if you weren't, and you're welcome if you were sick of all this self indulgent dribble. Speaking of self indulgent, (tangential thought) the other day we wrote a scathing email to CNN who showed a piece about how a woman in NYC is suing a hotel for 20 million USD b/c she got bites from bed bugs. She had "emotional distress" and "now hotels are no fun". After yelling at the TV (Jon's favorite pasttime) we decided to act on it. I will not include the text of the email but the phrase "self-indulgent litigious buffoon" was the center piece. Also a quick thank you for all the great responses to the last entry. Either we inadvertantly guilted you or the last entry was exceptional. ... read more

I am officially cerfitied as a Open Water Diver!! Yay! I have spent the past four days with Rainbow Divers in Nha Trang. This city borders the South China Sea with a 6km strip of white sand. The water is bright blue and days are easily passed on the beach and in the clubs at night. I opted for a bit more of an active approach though and signed up for scuba school. It was myself and three others: Aussie Matthew, Canadian Madeline and Dutch Stephanie (my diving "buddy"). We were lead and taught by the hilarious yet professional Sean (English) and Christian (French) divemasters and instructors. These guys know what they are doing it and are pros at teaching it. We spend the first two days splitting our time between the classroom in the morning ... read more

Yep, when beer is cheaper than water and a big bottle of whiskey sets you back a buck you know it's gonna be good times. Just remember to look for the sign saying 'Bia Hoi' or 'Bia Tuoi' and you'll know you've struck bargain basement liquid gold. I wouldn't say I've ever been a beer coniseiur* myself until now but at 50 cents for 2 litres it doesn't taste bad! And more on the cheap whiskey later... So here we are in Hoi An, before that Nha Trang, before that Mui Ne and before that Ho Chi Minh City. This entry is my attempt to catch up on the news of my travels without being too long winded. The way I babble on that is unlikely but wish me luck anyway! I've put in sub headings ... read more

Greetings everyone. It is Friday evening the 3rd of March. We are now in Nha Trang, a beach resort northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Supposedly this beach is one of the top 26 beaches in the world so I guess that means it is number 26! Tonight I'm going to catch you up on the last few days and add a few things we left off on previous posts. I will talk more about Nha Trang and our resort the Sofitel Vinpearl Resort and Spa in a future post before we leave Nha Trang. I'd like to take you back to Sapa which we left by train a few nights ago. Getting to Sapa is not easy. Not many westerners come here compared to the rest of Vietnam. It is a 10 hour train trip ... read more
