Mui Ne was a little surprise package for me as I discovered it had many faces. Each one diverse from the next. I did little here besides walk, ride, read, swim, sleep and eat. The Ocean looked clean and I relished in the chance to have a swim, sink my toes in the sand and smell the salty water. The water is not aqua blue as you may see in the southern beaches in Thailand but the atmosphere is tropical & beachy and uniquely belongs to Vietnam, no where else. My guest house was right on the waters edge so the constant lapping of waves were ever present morning, noon & night. As for sight seeing, well you could pretty much do this in one day as the attractions are fairly grouped and around 50km round ... read more

I mentioned to a friend in Vung Tau that I was heading to Mui Ne for a week in which she exclaimed in a very surprised manner, "What on earth are you going to do in Mui Ne for a week?" Mui Ne is about a 4hr bus ride from Ho Chi Minh costing about $7 or $8 if, like me you came from Vung Tau. The Bus ride is, to say the least a hair raising experience with traffic as chaotic as always. One of expats advised me to always travel by train in Veitnam as the buses are often in road accidents and as I sat on this bus knowing I had completely ignored his advice, I was silently praying we would make it there without incident. A near miss with another bus, saw ... read more

From Saigon we travelled up the coast to a lovely little seaside town called Mui Ne. As the title suggests, this place a full of kite surfers. The sea is very choppy but beautiful. Again, there are loads of fancy hotels with great views of the sea, but amongst all of that we managed to find a cheap place to crash. The second day in Mui Ne involved getting up at 4.30am to go on a trip to see the sunrise from some amazing white sandunes. Despite the early start it was so worth it. Being that early in the morning, meant that the dunes were untouched and the weather not too hot. A great way to start the day. For the first time on the whole of the trip we managed to sunbathe for a ... read more

Now Muine is lush. It’s a little strip of a town alongside an 11km beach which is host to some of (apparently) the best kite surfing in the world. This has it’s pros and cons: On the plus side there is constant entertainment to be found in watching the kite surfers (and there isn’t a muscle they don’t use if you get my drift ladies…) battle it out against the huge waves and each other. I’d love to have given kite surfing a go, but I worked out that it’d be a more expensive sport to learn than skiing. And maybe I should stick to having just one stupidly expensive hobby, at least until I get a job again. Also there is a thriving trade in beautiful looking hotels and bars all along the beach., but ... read more

After Saigon, we caught a bus to Mui Ne, an up-and-coming beach resort for locals. We decided to go there because Mui Ne has the only sand dunes in South-East Asia. We spent the first evening having a nice dinner in this pleasant seaside town. The next day, we booked a jeep tour to go to the two sand dunes as well as other sights within the area. Rolling around in the old army jeep was cool as we took in the sights. Our first stop was the Fairy Stream , which is a small river that runs through the sand dunes which had carved out large, beautiful sand banks and hills. We walked along the stream for a while and then up one of the sandy hills to get better views. After a quick stop ... read more

Our plan from leaving Saigon is to make our way northwards to Hanoi, stopping off at a number of places along the way - first stop Mui Ne! Mui Ne is a small coastal beach town, which was only a 5 hour ride up from Saigon. We arrived with 3 other backpackers (2 English guys and a Danish girl) and none of us had anywhere to stay booked. The five of us jumped on to the back of some moto-taxis making our way up the main strip of the town and eventually found a guesthouse that had room for us all at the inn! The town is mostly just a long strip along the coast that’s lined with restaurants, guesthouses and bars but is still quiet enough not to be just another tourist beach resort. As ... read more

Well we slept off the effects of a late Xmas eve night. We woke up some time in the afternoon and went for breakfast. After that we spent most of the day killing our hangovers at the beach. At night we were in search of an Xmas dinner. Unfortunately they don't really celebrate Xmas down here just some of the expat bars. Some of the bigger ritzy hotels had large dinners and buffets but they were all between 60 and 100 dollars and were not turkey dinner. We looked around a bit and then decided just to go to the bar that we normally end up at. To our surpruse they were serving Xmas dinner. It was great and had all the good stuff including turkey, stuffing and all the sides. It came with a nice ... read more
