Leaving the busy confines of Saigon on the road to the East coast beaches and sand dunes of Mui Ne. After a comfortable 4 hour bus ride we arrive in the beautiful paradise that is Canary Resort, Mui Ne. We arrrived to finding ourselves with our own private beach! There's a lot to be said for traveling off season. The beaches here are beautiful with white sand and blue waters but after donning our swim suits and splashing in to the water we were both disappointed by the small amounts of debris. The water is warm and beautiful, and in spite of the debris is still refreshing, and definitely worth a visit. We met a lot of travellers in Saigon who still recomended the beaches in Mui Ne over the popular beaches in Nha Trang. For ... read more

Hit the road early on Saturday and got a 7am bus from Nha Trang to Mui Ne, we finally arrived in Mui Ne about 12.30pm. We had not booked accommodation ahead so our first task was to find somewhere. We did not realise it but Mui Ne is actually pretty much 22km long, and all the hotels/resorts are spread across this 22km. The bus company gets a commission with one resort where we were dropped off, but it was too expensive for us. I saw around the corner of the bus one guy trying to catch our attention so I went to speak to him, walked around the corner of the bus and there were about 8 guys from hotels all wanting us to stay with them, they just swarmed around and tried to get us ... read more

Yesterday I had just woken up as Helen stretched and yawned and said "Happy Birthday Karen." Ah, I've reached 24. A knock on the door informed us that our bus had already arrived to take us from the cool and wet mountain climate of Dalat to the scorching heat of Mui Ne. After a quick baguette breakfast Helen, Julia and I boarded the bus - well really a delapidated mini van seriously lacking in suspension and of which we were the only passengers. We slept, bumped and sweated away the 4 hours to Mui Ne. At one stage a group of Vietnamese militants waved us down and loaded into the van, very smiley happy to be with the white western girls, chatting up Helen and taking photos of Julia. Eventually the rice paddies gave way to ... read more

This is quite possibly the driest, sandiest and the hottest place we've been yet. Having been abandoned at the wrong hotel at 1am by a bus driver who thinks he knows where we are staying better than I do, we were in no mood for an early start to our day here. Mui Ne is basically a 6 or 7 km strip of beach with a fishing village at one end and resorts along the rest of it. You smell it before you see it because the town is Vietnam's premier producer of fish sauce. The beach is not all that and a bag of potato chips so the real reason to stop here is the sand dunes. We employed the services of a couple of local moped drivers to ferry us around the area, stopping ... read more

So here we are in Mui Ne! After an easy and surprisingly quick bus ride from Dalat, we arrived Friday around noon. After a quick look around we also found a room which is not to pricy and still in a nice area- good enough for us to spend the next week or so whilst loitering on the beach… :) So what does Mui Ne look like? Well basically it’s a small village along a coastal road- what makes it so nice is the fact that the beach at Mui Ne is simply orsm! And thanks to its microclimate one must say that the weather is just as orsm as the beach (maybe even more)!!! So what do you do when you are close to paradise with a couple of days to spare? A day in ... read more

On Feb 9, we got up and had a free breakfast at the guesthouse. It comes with pineapple juice, Vietnam coffee, baguette, butter and jam. We left our big backpack in our guesthouse and reserved a room for our return. At 7:45, a representative of the the tour operator (TM Brothers Tour) came to the guesthouse to pick us up. On the bus, we met a cute Korean girl, who is 23 years old and in her fourth year of university. She is such a lively character and we really enjoyed her company. We also met a Chinese lady from Guilin who spoke excellent English. We later found out she is a teacher and had spent a year in the US. There are three tours -- 1-day, 2-day and 3-day Mekong Delta tours. Regardless of the ... read more

Today - a last minute decision - we decided to ditch the bus to Dalat, and stay here onnne morre day... so that we could once again rent a motorbike! sorry parents (Dad, I know you hate this more than my poor grammar), but it is the greatest way to experience the gorgeous seaside/country side/ country roads... and despite the fact that were horrible (or non) drivers at home, we seem to be fitting in quite well on the Mui Ne streets... love it! SO MUCH FUN! and it was rather easy to learn, too... easier than driving a car! Don't worry - we go under 40 all the time, and wear giant helmets... and we defenitely are extremely careful about the weaving traffic... haha. but seriously, this is the best place to rent a bike ... read more

So, on Monday Feb 6 at about midnight, we finally arrived in Vietnam! Ho Chi Minh City! We both didnt really sleep on the flight, so we couldn't wait to find the closest hostel... We picked up a taxi to Pham Ngu Lao area (the traveller district), and were dropped at a hotel belonging to a "close friend" of the taxi driver. It ended up being far more expensive then he claimed, but we were tired, and it was quite a nice place, so there we crashed! Silly jetlag... no sleep again! We were still awake at seven, so we meandered down to the hotel Duna's dining area, where we had a great baguette (it's a standard pretty much for brekky here), and chatted with some nice Ausralians. The minute we walked out the front door ... read more
