So we’re into the final stage of our Vietnam holiday. The bit where we kick back and relax after ten or so days of intense tourism. We’re at The Cliff holiday resort at Phan Thiet about 5 hours away from Saigon. Its a self-contained complex with all the luxury and garnish you'd expect from such a place. With a couple of glistening blue pools, a terraced restaurant for an extensive breakfast complete with an egg bar. There are lush green lawns replete with palm trees and plenty of colourful plant life to enjoy. There’s even a ‘swim up’ bar in the main pool for those who want to enjoy a cooling drink in their cossie! In many ways, a picture postcard example of an idealised holiday paradise. The rooms here are lovely. Spacious, clean and served ... read more

Die "Verbesserung" dauerte ... read more

On November 18, we left Ho Chi Minh City via bus to head to our "honeymoon" resort in Phan Thiet, a small coastal town north of the city. Scott arranged our trip, and we really didn't know what the bus situation would be until we got on it (other than the fact that it would take relatively close to 4 hours and drop us off...somewhere). Luckily, our bus was very nice, spacious and air-conditioned with complimentary bottles of water, and we soon found out it would literally drop us off right in front of our hotel. Score! During the ride, we even stopped at a bus stop/restaurant for lunch that served amazing pho - we were a tad sketched out by the set-up of the place at first, but decided to throw caution to the wind ... read more

Binh Chau to Phan Thiet Now we know where all the dragonfruit are grown! We cycled along sandy barren fields and small villages built on the sand and scrub land, until, after a sugar cane juice recharge, we descended into a valley with a huge abundance of dragonfruit trees. We couldn't resist picking up 3 for 60 cents! The next use of the land was salt flats, marked out by levees with water evaporating in the sun. A relay of women with wheelbarrows shifted the salt to the roadside. We arrived in Phan Thiet as the evening was drawing in. A nice downhill for tired legs brought us to a very grey and busy city. We were ready to drop and stopped at the first Nha Nghi we found. It was quiet and strangley had a ... read more

Slam. Jar. Smash. My head hits the window, back of a seat and my bag. I am jarred into existence through the bumpiest section of road. Sitting up, I gander out the window at a vast green field. Shauna is deep in thought her bag tucked between her legs reading a book or perhaps snoozing? The bus wobbles back and forth. Lurching forward and back. It appears only those with solid sleeping skills are still asleep, damn heavy sleepers. Looking at the Timex, I've only been able to catch twenty-three minutes of sleep. Why? I stare out the window at rows of fluffy green leaves, twirling vines and shrubbery. Peering over tops of heads between body parts I try focusing on the road as the driver sees it. My vantage point is excellent although I don't ... read more

I have just come back from a trip to Phan Tiet- Mui Ne. This was my frist trip with the family and I must say it was fantastic! The journey took us about 4 hours from Ho Chi Minh City, it is advisable to book a van with an English speaking driver so you can stop along the way to take pics. It was quite a scenic route with more that 30 chruches littered across this province called Dong Nai. Every 10 minutes, we saw huge church buliding, wihch was quite a sight! Upon approaching Phan Tiet, it was the most breathtaking sight! The sea and sky were the same colour-sky blue..amazing! The hotel was a even more amazing sight! The steps led us to a grand lobby, tranquil and modern at the same time. The looby ... read more

It was tough to leave Hoi An so quickly. It had become a very restful city...the weather was predictable...each day around 1:00 pm, it would rain like Hell for awhile then stop. It was a way to tell time so you didn't have to carry your watch. But as comes with travel, the time to move on was at hand. It was surprisingly easy...taxi to DaNang then fly down the coast to Nha Trang and a whole new area and mentality. The flight down the coast was routine and uneventful until the approach to the city when turbulence seemed a little excessive but the air over the jungle immediately next to the cooler air over the ocean created a bumpy ride that everyone else seemed unconcerned with...so I tried to ignore it but was extremely happy ... read more

Sat March 1st Phan Thiet Vietnam Another lovely day in paradise!! Waken to the sound of the surf and the birds..coffee on our patio..an amazing buffet breakfast and settle in for a full day of "veging".. We spent pretty much the whole day relaxing on the patio..reading and talking..with M making the occasional foray into one of the pools to cool down. I think the title line I put above is a Rod Stewart song..altho I'm not certain. I was saying to M earlier how fortunate we are that we both enjoy travel so much togeather..and indeed how fortunate we've been to be able to do it when we have. I started out by thinking of things that I/we had opportunities to do when we were younger..in school.. like learn languages..history..geography geo-politic etc.. all of which ... read more

Thurs Feb 28 2008 Ho Chi Minh city to Phan Thiet After a fairly quiet evening again last night we once again were awakened by a 6am wake up call in order to be ready to meet our car and driver at 8am to depart for Phan Thiet. This was to be another 4 hr or so journey to cover less than 200 km. We have to take the main North / South highway that interconnects Saigon and Hanoi. This entails sharing it with all other means of transportation (bicycles, scooters, cars, vans, cargo trucks, local buses, highway buses, semi trailers) on a 2 lane highway. Lets just say it's NOT a relaxing ride..these guys can find more ways to turn a 2 lane highway into 3 or 4 in a split second so you truly are ... read more
