Yesterday was another test of endurance with a 14 hour train trip. It wasn't all bad though, the scenery in the north of Vietnam is very different to the Plains and rice fields of the South. They still have rice fields but also have stunning mountains and karsts and rivers flowing through narrow valleys with water buffalo everywhere. The journey was also made more bearable by the 12 year old girl in the seat next who had been learning English at school for only 2 years but was a great conversationalist. With a bit of help from Google translate we got on famously as she told me all about Vietnam, Ba Na hill station in particular, where her family had just been on holiday, and Vinh city where she lives. As we neared Vinh city she ... read more

Our night bus arrived in Hanoi 3 am and this time the driver didn't let us sleep in the bus until sunrise, as he had no where that he was allowed to park so we all had to disembark. We all cringed at each other at the thought of having to wander the streets at such an early hour. It had actually been a very pleasant trip. A clean bus and not at all busy. Everyone on the bus was really friendly and some young girls were showing off their shopping. The drivers were respectful and polite. I really have to say that all the bad reviews for the night busses that I read about on Trip Advisor must be the very occasional incident or very out of date. This time we hadn't booked a bed ... read more

Big apologies but it's our last day in Hanoi, taxi pick up at 6 pm. Few places to see and watching the Old Quarter go by before we head and a last dunk in the pool! Had a superb meal last night with super company overlooking the lake in the Old Quarter and soaking up the celebrations of Reunification Day! Ciao for now followers, it's been sweet & memorable xx... read more

Hey everyone! The new post is up: https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/hong-kong-neither-china-nor-west As you all may or may not know, I spent last weekend in Hanoi, Vietnam, which was a blast. In fact, I enjoyed it much more than I had thought I would, which was definitely a pleasant surprise! The one qualm that I had about Hanoi was how it was crawling with foreigners. Before leaving, I was expecting to be in a city much less developed than Beijing or Shanghai, where we would be some of the only foreigners. Instead, I wouldn't be surprised if someone told me that I saw the same number of tourists as I did Vietnamese. It was absolutely crazy, especially having come from a city where foreigners, while not rare, are quite easy to pick out of a crowd. In Hanoi, it felt ... read more

I had a huge breakfast in anticipation of missed meals during the long day of travel. There were sad good-byes to our hosts at La Beauty de Hanoi. I gave maple syrup to the lady who oversees the breakfast kitchen and to the girl at the front desk who called me Santa Claus. I explained to her that it was Santa’s duty to give gifts to people who do a good job. Claudette also left a good tip in the box for that purpose. I guess it was acceptable and appreciated, judging from the wild-eyed smile from the staff present. Incredibly, we made it to the airport in virtual silence. The driver followed all the rules of the road. I wondered that they even existed, and he didn’t honk his horn once during the 45 minute ... read more

Yesterday we changed our return bus tickets to an earlier time. There was not much reason to spend the morning in the village except to watch the harbour activity. At least the bus company staff were friendlier than those the other day. The orders were still abrupt but with less aggessivity. Still, it was not until 3 pm that we arrived back in the capitol. There were lots of taxi drivers offering rides. We were told by the hotel staff to take a green taxi but Claudette was anxious to get to the hotel and nap. She is very congested. She took the next taxi she saw. It had a meter so we figured we were safe enough. The fare was way above the estimated rate. I am sure we were taken for a ride. The ... read more

Our boat engines started at 6:08 this morning; we had been consulted and had voted to start early to make the most of the day. After soup plus scrambled eggs, I went out onto the front deck to enjoy the sight of the mountains drifting by, wanting to soak up every moment of the unforgettable rock formations. The wind was stronger and the boat was moving faster, plus the mountains were more numerous – dramatic end to our visit. Arriving at the embarkation harbour, we could see the incredible number of docking points – dozens, if not over a hundred. On shore again, Thuy told us that due to the weather forecast, sailing on Ha Long Bay was shut down for this day and over-night. We had a lucky visit, especially because yesterday's sun let us ... read more

Our eyes popped at Moon Garden! We were invited by an attentive staff to take both hot tea and a special cold tea and banana cake on the plaza in front of the main house. Lush trees and bushes gently outlined the stone plaza and the pathways down the hill to a lake. To one side was a full-size household shrine. The couples were assigned to share three cabins, and the singles were to share the traditional-style house on stilts. This was revealed as a large common room divided by curtains and mattresses on the floor, making about ten spaces around an arrangement of cushions on the floor. After our initial surprise, and a bit of shock, we joined in the spirit of sleeping in Vietnam. At first, our group’s single male was included in this ... read more

Our hotel had a limited menu for breakfast, not including Pho! Eggs they are happy to do. Elizabeth came early and opines that they do the Chinese breakfast foods for the early-rising Chinese businessmen. Our first visit was to the excellent Women’s Museum, where chairs were set up in the courtyard for a conference and celebration for International Women’s Day tomorrow. Oddly for me, I visited the gift shop in the lobby before going to the galleries. Lots of silk scarves continued to entice, but I managed to curtail my instincts to buy. Instead I found a cheerful decorative lacquer plate depicting a boy and a buffalo. The Museum was well organized and provided excellent signs in Vietnamese, English and French. On the second floor were many garments and accoutrements related to traditional weddings from sever ... read more

We hurried out of the hotel this morning to visit again the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh. Because it was Sunday, extra crowds were lining up to view his embalmed body. Many people were wearing their best clothes – especially the women in colourful Ao Dai (traditional dresses). Obviously considering this a special outing, lots of parents had brought their children. A very long line of teen-aged students in their school uniforms of green soft trousers and green and white team jackets were about to enter, and all the others in line had to wait for the school group. As often happens, Thuy had a contact in the right place to put us in some type of VIP line, shorter than the one that trailed for hundreds of metres along the edge of the grounds. Thuy ... read more
