So the hard sleeper wasn't SO bad. We shared it with Sophie's friend Magnus and 3 other vietnamese men. They were very friendly and it always makes for a more interesting experience when you do as the romans do. One of the men rocked out to Magnus' discman most of the evening... pretty funny stuff. I woke up to find two young boys who had clearly just been watching me sleep through the barred window. They were excited now that this strange white creature was up and moving and so continued to watch and stare as I get up, pack... it would have been really creepy if they weren't only 8 or 9 years old. They didn't leave until their parents called them off the train. We followed and it was only 15 minutes into the ... read more

It’s been a while now since I was in Sapa or at least it seems like it although it’s only been a week. So much has happened since getting to Hanoi. However, I want to talk about Sapa before getting on to the rest. I got up to Sapa after crossing the border from China at Lao Cai on June 1st and I spent three days just wandering around the area and getting used to Vietnam. The highlight was on the second day, when I rented a motorbike and spent the riding through the hills past water falls and small villages, but also down into the valley to see some of the tribal villages of the Hmong and Dzao people. Sapa is only 50 kilometers or so away from the Chinese border, up in the mountains. ... read more

We had to spend 4 days in Hanoi to await our visa extensions - yes, that's how long it take and it costs USD20 each, and you have to go through your guesthouse - there is no option to arrange it directly with Immigration. So we thought we'd make the most of it and explore by foot, as is our wont. Hanoi is a lovely city with a beautiful lake and parks - some of them you need to pay an entrance fee to enter. We found sanctuary from the noisy streets in a little roof terrace restaurant whose staff we befriended over the few days we were there (Ning Bia). It was a great place to watch the daily life on the street in Hanoi - I was mesmerised one afternoon watching the motorbikes carrying ... read more

This is backtracking on our journey a bit, but we're finally getting this posted :) Be sure to check out the new photos on the Cruising China Seas/Wet and Wild entries, too! Sapa was one of our favorite places we've visited thus far on our travels. It is a small town in northwest Vietnam, settled in a little valley up in the mountains not too far from the Chinese border. The clouds often roll in low, giving the town a mistical effect. Small villages around Sapa are home to several different hill tribe people, each with their unique traditions and dresss. Getting to Sapa from Hanoi involved a night train...we ended up on a car with an older French man who didn't speak to us at all and a Vietnamese grandmother with her 6 yr old ... read more

Hello All, I hope that you are all well. Sorry I've rather fell behind in keeping you updated on my travels etc, but I'm afraid that I've become somwhat lethargic in the matter, putting things off until a latter date. I believe that my last blog was as long as a month ago. I've visted the South of Thailand as well as had a snapshot of Northern Vietnam since then. From Angkor Wat and Siem Reap (the town in which we stayed while visting the temples) we took a bus along a forsaken Cambodian road in an overpacked bus, the sort of vehicle that Dylan, Liz and I have become far to accustomed to. On the border we got into the far more comfortable Thai transportation and went forth, to Bangkok! By late evening we arrived ... read more

It's COLD!!!!!! Well, not that cold, but after so long in the sticky heat Sapa was like stepping into a fridge. Sapa is a very popular spot for tourists, the main reason being to trek through the hills to the various hill tribes around the town. We weren't equppied for trekking at all - no shoes (other than flip flops), no waterproofs, no warm clothes. On this basis we already new we wouldn't see much whilst there, but decided to go anyway. If anything it was a welcome break from town and a space to chill out before starting our journey home to England. Luckily for us when we arrived in town the weather was clear and we had some great views out across the hills and down the valley. We even manged a walk down ... read more

Back to the beach, so Nha Trang it was Party beach resort in Vietnam and party we did. The beach was really nice, clear blue deep water and empty, until the sun starts to go down when all the locals come out as it seems to be the way in Asia. They all stayed fully covered from the sun and are never on the beach until there's no sun. They just look at us crazy Westerners! Nha Trang is the place to dive so newly certified, off I go. It was a really good couple dives, the reef was spectacular and saw Moray eels and Tiger fish and lots of other lovely but nameless fish cos I wouldn't have a clue what they are called! It was really good just to go and dive and not ... read more

There is one thing I have to do while in Sapa. I have to find Pen. Pen is one of the hill tribe people living in a village outside of Sapa, and a friend of Karen’s. The only clues for finding her are a photograph and this letter: Dear Sherry, As soon as you get to Sapa find someone dressed the same as Pen. They will know her and send word for her to come into town to see you. She has 3 sons now including a new little baby boy. Her village is 5-7 kms from town. If you go out there take your own water and eat first. Pen speaks English and is gorgeous...Don’t try to get police permission to visit her village, it will take too long. Just plead ignorant if you are ... read more

-LATEST TRAVEL ITINERARY- Since I had unexpectedly spent the bulk of my time in Hoi An, I now have 10 days to make it through Northern Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and by May 13th, India where the next (and final) volunteer program awaits. My intention in Northern Vietnam is to rejuvenate in magical Sapa, ALONE. And boy is it working. Sapa sits proudly upon a mountaintop and is tucked away far north just miles from the Chinese border. It was no picnic getting here from Hoi An. One hour taxi, 1 hour flight, another 1 hour taxi, 10 hour train ride, and a 1 hour bus (also add waiting hours in between each). But I’m happy to say, it was well worth it. The weather is pleasantly warm during the day, and comfortably chilly at night, and ... read more
