After travelling from Hue to Hanoi we caught the overnight Green Train to Lao Cai in the mountains on the Chinese border. The train left Hanoi at 9.00 pm and we had a four berth compartment to ourselves. However, luxury was in short supply with shared loos and one washbasin for the carriage and it was a very rickety ride, making sleeping difficult. We arrived at Lao Cai at 5.30 am the following morning and were met by a guide who took us for a very early breakfast at a nearby restaurant. After breakfast we went to the bridge where one can cross over to China. The bridge is open from 7.00am to 7.00pm each day and we watched a steady stream of Vietnamese making their way over the bridge where apparently they purchase cheap Chinese ... read more

The longer i am in vietnam the more twisted and unsure my perceptions become of this place.. A grim soviet esq feel lingering in the air and a constant battle of personal greed is writhe in the north.. it is saturday morning, our plan at this stage was to get to a hill tribe town called bac ha, 340km away by road in time to see the sunday markets which bring people from different minority tribes from near and far.. shouldnt be too hard id imagine. since we we staying at a hotel we spoke to the woman at the front desk that we had mentioned our plans to when we arrived the night before, she spoke good english and said she would help us.. as we approach she immediately told us she had been ringing ... read more

Trung and I started our journey to Sapa at 7:30pm at the Ga Ha Noi (Ha Noi train station). Tip for fellow travellers, you need to go to Station 'B', behind the real train station. I wasn't with Trung, so I paid a boy 50 cents to walk me the 5 minute walk around the block to the right station. The ticket wicket staff at the 'B' station point me to another building outside the station. The people in the 'tour' building point me towards the ticket wickets. Another tourist points me towards the dark, outdoor space in-between the buildings. Everyone in each place tells me that its ok to 'wait here' for my ticket. I have a 'tourist' voucher, but no real ticket, and the train comes in 1/2 hour. After some time, I sit ... read more

After a few days in Hanoi sight seeing we headed off to Sapa. We were prepared for the December cold with our newly purchased North Face jackets that we bought for an exceptionally good deal at the shop in Hanoi Towers. Sights of interest that were visited included the Political Prison, the Temple of Literature and the Military Museum. Also of interest was Ho Chi Minh's mauseleum. From here we also visited the One Pillar Pagoda. I was apprehensive about having to leave my camera with the guards at the mauseleum, not to worry, there's a great little system that magically transports your camera from the front of the builiding to where you exit. You just show your ticket, and there's your camera. Don't go to this spot thinking you can discuss issues with your friends! ... read more

Sapa An impatient rapping at the door followed by a screeching "Lao Cai! Lao Cai!" wakes me from a sad dream. It takes a minute to piece together where I am. Empty wine bottles are rolling over pistachio shells that litter the floor. I am in a bunk bed. Barry and Cay are sleeping in a bunk bed next to mine. We are moving. We are on a train. But where are we going? Lao Cai, apparently. Then it all comes back. Lao Cai, end of the line for the train from Hanoi to the Chinese border. We were put on the train the night before by Pete Wilkes, an Australian artist/entrepreneur who has devoted his life to improving the lives of the ethnic minorities who inhabit the mountains of northwest Vietnam. Several years ago he ... read more

Hello Fellow Travellers , My first visit to Hanoi , Vietnam. I was surprised to see the development in the city. People are very lively and friendly . I had not done too much of a research about the city before visiting this place. I would like to relate to an incident which took place . It is a city which is known for its massages ( i was not really aware about this ) . I had my first massage. During the course of the massage , the lady touched my private parts and indicated for a massage there . She asked me how much i would tip her . We started to bargain . ( i feel disgusted about thinking about the incident) To my surprise she was throwing tantrums . Then she started ... read more

We had lunch today at Abeergies or something like that and it ended up being the same as Buffalobelle from yesterday. Literally had their menu with their name on the hard cover. Strange. There we had the potato soup again, but this one was a bit different, and we ordered a pizza. The service was great…more attentive than in Buffalobelle. Our mission was to find Ronald some The North Face hiking shoes. He’s a size 44/45, so it is really hard to find shoes—they really only go up mostly to 42 or 43. Apart from that, he was picky about no shiny buckles and wanted a dark color – gustos I agree with. They have some pretty ugly stuff they try to sell. While we were walking around to the different shops, we ran into Lan, ... read more

The walk today was really great, much better than yesterday's. Yesterday we just walked through one village and right back up, but today we walked about 12.5 kilometers and saw two villages and a lot of beautiful countryside. It's basically rice paddies as far as the eye can see and they aren't flat, but have been built up into the sides of the mountains, just like in Peru. The women from the Black H'mong followed us the whole way for two reasons: they go to the market in the morning and then walk home, and they wanted us to buy things from them. Our guide, Lan, told us a little bit about her life -- she makes the most money out of anyone in her family (she's 16). Max, the owner of Kangaroo Cafe, just sort ... read more

We were woken up by a knock on the cabin door at 5:25am, and arrived at about 6 am, met our guide, and headed to the Cat Cat hotel in Sa Pa. We got there around 7 am and had breakfast and then were shown to our rooms. Ronald and I slept until our 1:30 pm meeting with our H'mong guide. Our 16-year-old guide took us through a local village, into some of the people's houses, and back up to our hotel. It was really interesting to see these people on a Sunday working really hard to build a house together -- barefoot. We also saw a woman making shiny cloth by rocking back and forth on a smooth stone. I wish I could really experience their lives, but I think it would be impossible unless ... read more
