Leaving Hue we took the overnight train up to Hanoi; about a 13 hour journey. With my shoulders still red from sunburn the hardest thing for me was running along with my rucksack trying to get on the train. Extreme pain. Ouch! The sleeper train was actually pretty good with 4 people to each room, each with their own bunk. Myself, Kenji, Steve and Brooke shared one, (a room not a bunk). The train food that was included with the ticket leaved a lot to be desired. It looked absolutely disgusting.. 5 nasty objects floating in liquid, meat of pig skin, fat, flesh, bone and innards, something resembling soup and some rice. Whilst most people could only eat the rice, Kenji loved everything apart from the rice. “Rice Bad” he said. It was pretty funny! Luckily, ... read more

After enjoying the mountains of Sapa and then heading back to Hanoi I was really looking forward to getting to a beach, so not wanting to spend much more time in Hanoi I made the fatal mistake of booking a Halong Bay tour on my own, without a recommendation from another traveller... I was just desperate to get out of Hanoi as I wasn't enjoying the heat at all after the cooler climate of Sapa. I didn't want to wait around until I met another traveller who wanted to go to Halong Bay, as I was wanting to go there the very next day, so I thought I'd take my chances with joining a tour group on my own - having met so many nice people over the last few weeks, I didn't really consider the ... read more

More than 600km separate Huế and our next destination, Hà Nội, largest and capital city of the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam. As we have already found out 600km equals overnight bus, except one even longer than the Nha Trang - Hội An leg. It is also a route that gets very bad press from visitors to Việt Nam for appalling service, slow buses, exceptionally horrific driving (even for here) and so on...Another option is the train, which thunders to Hà Nội at an exhilarating average speed of 35km/h. Ho ho ho...We know when to cut our losses so all the way back in Cần Thơ we booked a flight to Hà Nội from Huế on Việt Nam Airlines. A taxi picks us up from the Mimosa Guesthouse (where do they find these names ?) and ... read more

We knew it was monsoon season in Asia but nothing could have prepared us for this two day trip. From getting stranded at a port on an island without knowing the name of our hotel and no show from the tour guide...to having to wade through water up to our waists we certainly got more than we thought was involved in the trip...apparently the island (Cat-ba) had never had rain like it before, so getting back off the island was a bit of a mission.... read more

It is hard to pass through Hanoi’s old quarter without seeing a hotelier or travel agent hawking some kind of package deal for tours in the region. The two most popular destinations are Sapa, a northern mountain town not far from the Chinese border, and Halong Bay, a vast waterway dotted with some 3,000 limestone islands. Our first trip was Halong Bay and we poured a good amount of research into which cruise company to take. Every vendor sells a better package than the last and there is a wide variety of prices. We ended up buying our tickets for a two night trip directly from a tour company, saving on commission and turning the smiles on our hotel staff faces upside down. Despite the variation in pricing, each Halong Bay touring company offers some combination ... read more

Halong Bay is a can't-miss stop on any first time vacation in Vietnam. The tree covered limestone islands that jut out of the water are absolutely breathtaking. The easiest way to see the bay is to arrange a tour out of Hanoi. The typical itinerary is a three hour drive east of the city to the coast, followed by lunch. Depending on what tour company you use, there will be different comfort levels of the buses and your accomodations, which are typically on a junk boat on the bay. During the afternoon you cruise around the bay and usually stop at some caves (see photo) and then go off to a little cove for a swim. You stay on the water overnight and head back to land just in time for the next group get on ... read more

This past weekend we finally did the "number one" thing to do in Vietnam, a trip to Halong Bay. We were mostly excited to be in the quiet again, but it really was a great time! The scenery is just as beautiful as everyone says it is - limestone karst islands jutting straight up out of the water, etc. (see our photos, they speak much louder than words!). After our splurge on the very expensive Handspan Tour to Cuc Phuong, we opted for the slightly more budget Sinh Cafe - one of the more popular tourist cafes in town. Everything here is organized through these cafes, which are mostly not cafes at all, but travel agencies who organize tours. So pretty much everyone does the same thing when they go to Halong Bay - you spend ... read more

We got up early and caught our bus to Halong City, where we would meet the boat that would take us on a tour of Halong Bay. The ticked included meals, however we had heard that the alcohol they sell on the boat is extortionately expensive so we stocked up on cheap Dalat Wine the previous night and smuggled it on with us! After waiting around for what seemed like hours in the scorching heat, watching the complete chaos of all the boats trying to push their way through to the harbour, we boarded and set off. Halong Bay is beautiful; it is a complete maze of limestone cliffs protruding at random intervals from the sea. The rock formations are staggered with cracks and steps making this place a rock climber’s heaven. The scenery was reminiscent ... read more
