Headed to Ha Long bay from Hanoi for a 3 day/2 night tour of the Ha Long bay and Cat Ba Island. As always it all started well, the bus journey was fine, once we got there it started to go wrong. Firstly we were moved groups, which was a bit of a pain as we went from a group of people our age to a group full of couples which we thought would be a bit rubbish, the last thing a couple would want would be 2 drunk english guys with a drunk aussie on his birthday wrecking their boat trip, but everyone on the boat was great. Ha Long bay is a fantastic place made up of over 2000 limestone islands (as I was told/lectured to in one of the caves by someone who ... read more

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- They say that Halong Bay is undoubtedly the natural wonder of Vietnam. The heritage site consists of 5000 small islands rising out of the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. Halong Bay is on the East Coast of Vietnam. I think it compares ... read more

YET AGAIN ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH PICTURES, WE PICKED UP A VIRUS ON OUR MEMORY CARD FROM AN INTERNET CAFE SO PICS WILL BE POSTED LATER SORRY BUT AT LEAST YOU CAN READ ABOUT THE TRIP We've been really worried about our Halong Bay trip since we booked it in Hue, as we have been hearing lots of stories from other people that had been, and not all of them good. We had heard of people paying $100 being on the same boat as people that had paid $35, people being told that they would go to Monkey Island or go kayaking and it never happened and over crowded boats. But we need not have worried, we were told for $49 we would get 3 days/2 nights 1 night on the boat and one on Cat Ba ... read more

The trip to Halong Bay was really awesome. We were feed 3 seafood feasts a day, so of course I was in culinary paradise the whole time. There was so much food that no one was able to finish except for our table because we dined with this French Guy, Florian, who has been working for an NGO in Mongolia for the past year so he is eating to make up for lost time. The Mongolian diet seems to be entirely made up of Yak dairy products and mutton. I don't think I'd do well there. I spent one night sleeping on a boat, which was actually less exciting than one would expect. Probably because I was tired and lamely went to bed before 9pm. Something about sea air just makes me tired. Plus there was ... read more

Theres not much i can say about this place except its one of the most beautiful places i have ever seen. The scenery is just stunning. For 40 euro you get transport to and from Ha Long, a night on a boat and a night in a hotel 3 meals a day, kayaking, trekking and visit a cave......cheap as chips!! The first day we visited a huge cave that was only discovered 10 tears ago. It was a bit spoiled by all the coloured lights though. That evening we anchored ship in a little cove. There were about other boats all in the bay and everyone went swimming. The water was warm and very salty but jumping off the boat was fun. We ended the night playing cards and drinking games, great craic, then off to bed ... read more

Saturday Uncle Arlyn and I took a trip to Ha Long Bay. The bus picked me up at the my Hotel at 7:30 AM and we were on our way! Ha Long Bay is about 120 miles northeast of Hanoi and is worth every mile. It wa s great trip, and we made many new friends from other countries. We were the only Americans on the bus, but we had great company with travelers from Belgium, France, Finland, England and South Korea. Once again, everyone spoke English. We had a really fun time with lots of stories and laughter. Ha Long Bay was Beautiful! Upon arrival we got on board about a 30-passenger boat, but there were only about 14 of us, so we had lots of room. It was a four-hour cruise, and we took ... read more

Hi Everyone, I received a few comments that readers couldn’t find the filmstrip on the last post. The fact is I should have explained it better. The film strip is accessed by clicking onm the film icon at the top of the page. By the way- I hope that you know that if you click on any picture, you get a larger copy of the pictures. Saturday I took a trip to Ha Long Bay. Ha Long Bay is about 120 miles northeast of Hanoi and is worth every mile. If you are ever in Vietnam, take advantage of the tours. My tour to Ha Long Bay included an air-conditioned 18 passenger bus, a four hour cruise on the bay, a fresh seafood dinner (I’ll talk about that later), admission to two sight-seeing tours and transportation ... read more

We’ve taken a four-hour bumpy bus ride out to the coast. The Vietnamese countryside is just as you would imagine - miles of endless rice fields with workers in colonial hats farming (they really do wear those hats everywhere). Lots of cattle and water buffalo roaming around. The roads are not as bad as we thought they might be, the biggest problem is the constant noise - even out of the towns, the locals beep their horns almost constantly for some reason (this keeps any sleep on the bus to a minimum unfortunately!) Anyway, HaLong Bay is fantastic - we both agreed it was one of the best natural wonders we have ever seen!! We spent today on a boat cruise sailing around the amazing islands. Rather worryingly, the local boats are known as ‘Junk Boats’ ... read more

From our Sahara desert retreat we spent 35 hours travelling up the coast to the North (Hanoi). I was particularly impressed when we were awoken at 5.30am on the sleeper train to loud music blasting out in to all the cabins! All the Vietnamese and their screaming kids got up and made sure we couldnt sleep through! How kind. We were fed the most vile, gristly meat with sludgy, stinking sauce so we only ate the plain rice for 24 hours. The scenery however was fantastic, the mountainous landscapes, lakes and stunning coastal scenery helped the journey pass. We arrived late and weary in Hanoi and as we got off the train we were surrounded by touts shouting at us to take their hotel or taxi. We opted against the ant infested rooms and went for ... read more
