We are in Halong town at the moment after a great day cruising around Halong Bay. We arrived in Hanoi at 5am this morning after getting the overnight sleeper train from Hue. The train ride was actually quite good fun despite it being 13hrs long. We were in cabins that slept 4 which was fine although it probably would not be quite so good if you did not know the rest of the people you were sharing with. The food they served on the train left a bit to be desired. Think airline food but worse! We got the bus from Hanoi to Halong Bay this morning which took a few hours then we boarded our boat. We had a boat between the 12 of us and our guide so that was really nice. Getting on ... read more

We decided to pass on the much used tour package to Cat Ba Island and chose instead to do it ourselves. In the morning, we jumped on cyclos (bike cabs) for the ride to train station. It was a bit unearvy being in traffic on highways with trucks and cars while sitting on a chair being pushed by a bicycle. We caught the local train for 2.5 hours to HaiPhong during which I spent an hour practicing my Vietnamese with a young man who also wanted to practice his English. Upon arriving in HaiPhong, we were attacked by motorscooter taxi drivers who all wanted our business. We accepted rides from two women drivers who zipped us across town to the ferry landing. We then boarded the slow boat down the river into Ha Long Bay and ... read more

We arrived in Hanoi, which is the second biggest city in Vietnam. This was a stop on the major bus route so that we could get to Halong Bay. Hanoi was just another big city... but it had something special about it which I can't describe. It showed true Vietnemese culture; Vendors carrying long poles over their shoulders with baskets on either side; cone shaped hats; crowds of Vietnemese guys around 10 cent beer stands; menus at restaurants serving fried pig ovaries or marinated dog steak; a billion motorcycles zooming and weaving around animals, vendors, pedestrians, and cyclos (bicycle taxis with carriage on front), thousands of counterfit products, and of course motorcycle drivers strategicaly placed on every corner to harrass you. Speaking of counterfit products, we all ran into a dvd store. Between the 3 of ... read more

Hey All, Just a quick update to say all is well, Just been to a fasinating part of world. A world heritage listed area, Halong Bay is a majestic group of 2000 odd islands all jutting up out of the calm sea. Any James Bond fans will know what I'm talking about, Huge limestone islands that erupt up out of the sea like termite mounds in the outback. (Used in many JB films) Another early morning start, this is Day 16 and I think we have only had one sleep in. I'll definatly need a holiday from this holiday, wonder what the Bahama's are like... hehehe Actually on that note, we have decided to try and have around 4-5 days in Phuket before the end of the trip, so we don't feel as stuffed as we ... read more

10th October - Halong Bay (I think this one is going to have a lot of photos) It is almost time for us to leave Vietnam and we are getting very excited about journeying into China. Before that though, here is what we've been up to in the last week or so. From Hanoi we booked a trip to Halong Bay. As a general rule we try to stay away from organised tours as you tend to feel a little herded around and have to do everything according to someone elses timescale but for Halong Bay it just worked out easier.. and cheaper.. to book it as a package, so off we went. It got off to a fairly bad start when an hour into the trip we were 'unexpectedly' taken to a handicraft shop to ... read more

after our HORRIBLE night train from Sapa (broken ac, dirty sheets, stinky cabin mates, and the FOULEST bathroom holes ever...shout out to liz warren for the tp roll!) we made it back to Hanoi at the butt crack of dawn. we took advantage of the light morning traffic, and we did the unthinkable in this crazy city... dun dun dun... we got a "taxi" ride on the back of motobikes! we are hooked and want one in the states. ah ha ha ha. sorry. have to side note for a sec. a cricket just landed on jessie's arm and she freaked out. then stacy was like "haha, why are we scared? we like to eat you. come back!" ok. anyways, back to the adventure. well, the picture does not really capture the moment, but imagin this ... read more

One of the main attractions of Hanoi, besides the lovely city itself, are the package tours to Halong Bay leaving every morning from nearly every hotel in town. The morning after I re-united with the girls in the city we climbed into yet another mini-bus and headed toward the bay. The scenery was spectacular. Ciara and I kept nudging each other with excitement as we sped past massive rock formations situated behind lush green rice fields and palm trees. We were ecstatic when we arrived at the docks and jumped aboard one of the large wooded boats. With a small group of only 15 passengers it was cozy and friendly on board. It takes the boat an hour or more to putter on out to the massive rock formations that make HaLong Bay so stunning. We ... read more

We opted to take a three day and two night trip into the World Heritage Site of Halong Bay. Boarded our junk in Halong City in the chaotic port and eventually negotiated our way out of the harbour. We stopped at the largest cave in the bay and some time wandering around the caverns listening to the echoes and being told some of the legends of this area. That afternoon, Juliet and I opted for a refreshing swim in the open water of the South China Sea -Sara chose to be the photographer. A jump from the top deck of the boat (after some persuasion from Juliet) resulted in a fantastic bruise on my arm from the impact with the water - I need to perfect my water entries!! We changed boats in order to sail ... read more

Monday 22nd August Early start with breakfast before I set off in the bus with a bunch of other tourists (including Dan and Myca from my hotel, and three American girls, Dorie, Betsie and Alica) to go to Halong Bay. The journey on the way to the coast further north was really interesting, it's amazing how much business is popping up around here, there were tonnes of 'industrial parks' on the road side, and another thing I noticed was that all the Government buildings were painted yellow and red (the country's national flag colours!) On the way to the coast we stopped off at the usual tourist tat shop... but 'unfortunately' it was flooded so we couldn’t get out off the bus (oh yeah, I forgot to say, it was raining!) Arrived at Haiphong (I think?! ... read more
