We got up early and caught our bus to Halong City, where we would meet the boat that would take us on a tour of Halong Bay. The ticked included meals, however we had heard that the alcohol they sell on the boat is extortionately expensive so we stocked up on cheap Dalat Wine the previous night and smuggled it on with us! After waiting around for what seemed like hours in the scorching heat, watching the complete chaos of all the boats trying to push their way through to the harbour, we boarded and set off. Halong Bay is beautiful; it is a complete maze of limestone cliffs protruding at random intervals from the sea. The rock formations are staggered with cracks and steps making this place a rock climber’s heaven. The scenery was reminiscent ... read more

7/17-7/19 After much debate we all decided to go on an organized tour of Halong Bay containing almost 2000 beautiful islands. We were told that many locals also vacation here and that it shouldn't be missed. Although we wouldn't give our tour company 5 stars we would absolutely recommend visiting Halong Bay. Two other guys, Emmit from Ireland and Andrew from England, had the pleasure of joining our little group and the 7 of us spent the first day driving down from Hanoi and then taking a boat to zig zag through the islands. We stopped to explore an enormous cave where a sport has been made out of discovering the formations of rock that look like people or animals (to be explained visually in attached picture). After that we hopped back on the boat and ... read more

After the complete mentalness of Hanoi we have spent the last week in Northern Vietnam, firstly in Halong Bay on a lovely junk swimming and kayaking among the karsts and then trekking in Sapa right up on the Chinese border with Vietnam - all in all far uncharacteristically adventurous! The mountains in SaPa were truly amazing, especially the view from our Eco Lodge (water heated by solar panels ! Soon we will both be sandal wearing green party activists..). We went for two treks to local villages where Charlotte contemplated kidnapping cute village children. Hywel was rather more partial to the pot bellied pigs and the ever funny water buffalo. At the end of the second trek we ended up at an idyllic water fall for swimming and jumping from rocks etc (- brilliant ) with ... read more

Waking up several times during the night largely due to our boat colliding with another left me pretty tired and not feeling full of energy and ready for breakfast. After dropping the 3 dayers on Cat Ba Island we slowly headed back to Halong City, before taking the long bus journey back to Ha Noi. In my mind the perfect way to recover from a journey like that is with a smoothie, so an awesome Avocado and Custard Apple one was soon in my hand! In the evening we went for Bia Hoi (fresh draught beer) at the informally named 'Bia Hoi Junction' where Bia Hoi stalls are set up on each corner of a crossroads. It was around halfway through Bia Hoi #1 when I witnessed a motorbike strike the side of a taxi. The ... read more

I've just returned from a three day trip to Ha Long Bay. We took the bus from Hanoi and as soon as we arrived in Ha Long City we hopped on our boat and had lunch immediately. The boat made it's way through, at first, other boats but as we got further away, we had more and more privacy. The Ha Long Bay area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and for good reason. The landscape is absolutely stunning: clear blue waters with harsh, jagged limestone islands poking up out of the water and covered in mangrove. I got extremely trigger happy (for those who know him - think about Tim at New Year's Eve and multiply it by ten!) with the camera so those who know me will be counting the days til my photo ... read more

I arrived in Hanoi early from my night train, and met up with Khay again who had booked us on a tour to Halong Bay. We went and grabbed some of the now staple Pho Bo (noodle soup) and then walked around the lake killing time before the tour pick up. Walking around the shores of Hoan Kiem I was presented with one of the most funny and surreal sights of my travels thus far. What we found was essential a massive outdoor gym. Along one section of sidewalk a 6-a-side badminton match was taking place. A few metres away a stereo played calm music to a group of geriatrics practicing thai chi. On the other side of the road upbeat disco music set the pace of the young and trendies and their booty shakin' and ... read more

3 hours in a cramped bus. With bum asleep, legs in pain and generally in a bad mood, I was not happy to hear the tour guide say "All boats cancelled because of storm, and no more boats for 3 days". It was just what I didnt want to hear about my trip to Halong Bay, the famous bay filled with imposing rocky islands - certainly a must see in Vietnam. So all we did then was head back to Hanoi. Another 3 hours, same cramped seat. Grrrr. I met up with Khay again in the evening and grabbed some dinner and a few bia hois (fresh beer). Its very interesting to experience a vietnamese city with a vietnamese speaker, as you don't feel like a complete tourist speaking loudly and slowly all the time. However ... read more

After wading through a number of tour companies with an unbelievable range of prices for Halong Bay tours (going upto over $200) I decided to reject the recommendations I had received for some expensive agencies and take a gamble on a $35 3-day all inclusive trip to Halong Bay. The next few days that followed were some of the best of my trip thus far. After a cramped bus journey to the coast we boarded our boat and settled down as we set sail. By the time we had eaten a delicious buffet lunch the boat had reached possibly the most spectacular scenery I've seen so far - huge limestone rocks jutting somewhat randomly out of the emerald waters interspersed with floating villages and fishing boats, under a pefectly blue sky. No photo could possibly do ... read more

After an early start by minibus to the local wharf, we boarded a private boat & cruised around for a few hours. We stopped off & explored Halong Bay caves, then detoured to a nearby island for a swim off the boat, followed by a yummy seafood lunch. Afterwards it was onto yet another minivan headed for the border town of Lang Son.... read more
