Friday, July 28 2006 - enroute to Hoi An We'd heard bad things about the buses in Vietnam but we decided to take one to Hoi An anyway, seeing as how it was only 3 hours. 5 hours later we rolled into town after our first bout with the infamous Vietnamese bureaucracy (read: corruption). We were scheduled to leave at 2:00 pm but the bus was stalled for over an hour when the police decided to stop the driver and demand a fee for a "permit" to leave Hué. No such permit exists, of course, except at the whims of the powers that be. They demanded 600 000 dong (about $37) and took his license. We waited on the hot bus for over an hour until they sorted out the "paperwork" which appeared to involve 15 ... read more

May 18 - 23, 2006 Of course, the title is only funny if you know (and we did not prior to coming to Vietnam) that Hue is pronounced “whey” not “hugh” or even “hughie” as we heard some people call it during our stay. We did not like Hue very much. One of the problems may have been elevated expectations. Our guidebook really talked up Hue, particularly the food, even going so far as calling its food the best in Vietnam. That kind of hyperbole gets our attention but it set us up for disappointment because we thought the food was far from the best we have had in Vietnam. In addition, we were pestered by the cyclo and moto drivers constantly (one even lied to Roger about the availability of a nearby ATM trying instead ... read more

No sooner had I fallen asleep, blind drunk, than I was woken by Deano in a panic as our bus was leaving in 15 minutes. Hauled myself out of bed and stumbled around the room, still pissed, trying to pack my things. Managed to catch it and proceeded to speak drunken gibberish to some poor Vietnamese guy sitting next to me. While I was ranting on about the lack of legroom and how the buses over here are built for the Vietnamese not us Westerners, he was looking at me blankly, obviously with no idea what the hell I was talking about! The bus journey was supposed to be 4 hours, so we were all looking forward to quite an easy ride. Unfortunately when we stopped for lunch our bus had a puncture so we were ... read more

I arrived back in Hanoi after a thoroughly enjoyable few days in Ha Long Bay only to have some dinner and make my way to Hanoi train station, about to depart on a 13 hour long overnight train to the ancient royal city of Huế, in the central provinces of Vietnam. I had planned on taking a soft sleeper carriage all the way (basically a berth of four with nice beds and air con) but unfortunately these had all been booked so I was forced to take a hard sleeper (less comfortable beds, 6 berth ie two bunks of three but, crucially, you still have air con). The train accommodation turned out to be perfect for my needs (I can sleep anywhere anyway!) although my top bunk was a little claustrophobic. As it turns out, though, ... read more

The 5 hour long bus trip to Hue was relatively painless and we checked into a nice family run guesthouse (where the owner brought me a portable tv just so that I could watch the footy). Hue is a really pretty and relaxing city situated astride a river and with loads of trees everywhere. However, even with the breeze from the river and shade from the trees it was still horrendously hot which made exploring somewhat tiring. On our first full day we wandered around the central part of the city inside the city-walls which is known as the citadel. Within the citadel is another walled area called the Imperial Enclosure which was originally for the emporor's official functions (such as entertaining his concubines in an area called the Forbidden Purple City where only eunuchs were ... read more

Jackie and I left Hanoi early in the morning to get to Halong Bay. We had signed up for a 3 day, 2 night tour through our guest house and had a 3-hour bus ride to the coast. In a similar fashion to Chinese tours, we stopped at a souvenir shop on the way where they charged outrageous amounts for water and ugly trinkets. The heat didn’t let up as we got closer to the coast either; Just seemed to get hotter. Perhaps it was coincidence or just a lack of tours to go on, but we ended up on the same tour with a mother and son (university aged) from the San Francisco area that we had met the day before at Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum. Another coincidence…the mother’s best friend is married to one ... read more

After a horribly hot bus ride from Hoi An, we arrive in Hue and are dropped off in the middle of I don't know where. All I know is I'm really frigin' hot and I am now carrying three bags, the newest being my $2 nike duffel bag with all my new clothes, and I want a hotel room with A/C ASAP! I have been living happily without A/C up until now. It is so bloody hot here I can't take it. After the binging in Nha Trang this is really the perfect detox. You just sweat and sweat and out come all the toxins. Pretty gross really. Anyways, we dump our stuff onto the ground at some random corner in Hue and try and figure out a plan of action. It's the last weekend of ... read more

So we're on the bus from Hoi An to Hue when we find out that the biggest festival of the year is taking place in Hue and there are no rooms available in town. We had planned to stay for only one night in Hue, as we had a flight the next day to Hanoi. We considered touring Hue, and sleeping at the airport if we were unable to find any rooms, however, where would we keep our luggage? We were dreading the suitcase we lugged around, but that contained our precious tailored wardrobe! Top Priority! In hindsight, we should have mailed all our goodies to Saigon to The Aunties, as it would have been the stress-free option. The lovely pit stops on beach front hotel properties was our reward for enduring the sweltering heat on ... read more
