Monday 11th September 2006 It wasn’t a peaceful night’s sleep. The Vietnamese train almost sounded like it was falling to bits as it swayed to and fro. Eventually we arrived in Hue, as we exited the station there was ‘our’ man waiting for us, holding a big sign with our names written on it, so much more simple booking ahead than having to fight off all the touts saying “You wan room”. We dropped off our bags at the hotel and headed straight out for breakie. Just a few doors down from the hotel was Café on Thu Wheels, a place that we had read about in the Lonely Planet, this was almost like an Aussie outback pub, with graffiti, messages and trinkets covering every wall, including the ceiling. It was very friendly too. We headed ... read more

So we have this kinda tour guide person who is taking around the central part of Nam and name is Chinh. Man, this guy is way cool. Him and his bro have a tour office and John Ward told us to go with him. Not exactly cheap (1200) for 7 days 6 nights w/ guest house, touring and an air conditioned car. But anyways we went to the Chu Lai army base, that is where Trinas first husband was. So today Chinh took us up to firebase blaze and bastogne! Both of the places where dad was! Well, it was about an half mile up the side of a hill and on a road (kind of!) and lots of rocks and a lil bit of mud. Not as bad as it looks though... It took my ... read more

So, the other day we were in Hoi An and that is a great place. About 20 minutes from China beach and Marble Mountain is this anchient city. There really wasnt a whole lot to do there but it was relaxing. Anywho, we went down to where Lt. Calley massacred a whole village called My Lai. There was old bullets and bombs and the entire village was gone. All except where the foundations are. That is it! Nothing left at all. Our guide was saying how the US Army came and just slaughter all these innocent people. Pretty crazy! Well we went on the Ho Chi Minh Trail for about 50 miles or so and saw some of the old old villages. Those villages are for the minorities of Viet Nam, the Catholics for example are ... read more

well I have finally left Tam Ky and it was a an emotional last day but i kinda knew that id be going back to pick up the rest of my bags so it wasn't as bad! Felt really strange leaving though because it did become my home but once again i was stepping out alone to do some travelling with no plan really as to where i was headed! my friend lam booked me a bus ticket for nha trang which is about 500 km south of Tam Ky so i was taken by mrs hahn and anh (a guy who came to same goodbye to me, who i taught, but he also helped out at the Home of affection). In true vietnamese style it was an hour late so i stood there having a ... read more

Our first night train in Vietnam was very good - unfortunately Matt was in a different carriage, but Claire and I were very lucky with the company in our compartment: 2 very friendly vietnamese couples and a very well behaved toddler - whinged a lot less than Matt! We arrived in Hue mid morning and saw a lot of celebrations for Vietnam day on the way to our hotel. We took the much-recommended motorbike tour from the Cafe on Thu Wheels in the afternoon and saved lots of money as entry to the Citadel and all the tombs is free on Vietnam Day - cashback! Minh, our tourguide, was very funny and very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the tour - the best part was riding out to the countryside to see a bit of rural life ... read more

I think this is the first time that I've actually left the real date on an entry! I'll try to make this shorter, but i have so much geography to cover. We'll start with the overnight train to Hue. What was supposed to take 12 hours took about 16, but that's no real surprise in this part of the world! We were travelling with James and Ray, but we couldn't get a sleeper car all together - there were two together and two random tickets. Being the gentlemen they are, they gave Melissa and i the option of sticking together, which we happily accepted. Our "roommates" were a lovely British couple called Katie and Greg, and the six of us passed the first few hours chatting over some beers. It was a pretty cool experience - ... read more

We took a short day trip to see the De Militarized Zone or what was left of it after the Americans had finished! It was interesting to see the Vietnamese version of how the events of the war of the North against the South unfolded. The DMZ stretches for around 5 km either side of the Ben Hai River. This river is the official border between the North and the South of Vietnam. It is quite interesting how petty it used to get between the two regions. The North would paint the bridge one colour, then the South would re-paint it another. This continued back and forth until they agreed to actually divide the bridge and paint each respective half their preferred colour. Other ways in which they would compete were: building and rebuilding flag towers ... read more

11 August - We arrived in Hue at about 10am and went out quickly for a wander about the old citadel. There's an old palace there, but it's been pretty devestated by bombs what with being close to the demilitarised zone (DMZ). We had lunch in a restaurant as recommended by our friends at the Lonely Planet which is run by a deaf mute (suspiciously there are two of the same at the next two doors on the street) so it was back to pointing and gesturing to order food, I missed that from China. 12 August - We decided to go for a tour of the DMZ. 6am start, not so good. There wasn't a great deal to see as most of the sites had been bombed or otherwise destroyed since the end of the ... read more
