Decided on a simple day tour to the Mekong Delta region today. We were considering staying down there, but there would've been too much time wasted in travel and all that. We were again the cool kids today, taking the back seat of the bus - by lead of Mark...he seems to think he was experienced with this cool kid business? Made our way to a boat area where we jumped on a pretty dodgy looking motorised boat which ended up being safe enough. Took a slow ride through the fishing port. The fishing boats are kinda cool, but...not too sure about the safety standards... This boat took us to Con Phung (Phoenix Island) where we got to have some substandard lunch. Of course we had to draw attention to ourselves... sitting there with food ... read more

May 30, 2007 Mekong Delta…a small town (not sure where)...Ben Tre Humid, night time 7:19pm I am skipping dinner right now. I promise all we seem to do is eat. It’s usually been going: eat, class, eat, class, “free time (2 hours),” eat, bar, sleep. It’s not like I’m ever full at dinner or any meal, its just the action of eating. I can’t do it anymore. Plus I have not run in more than a week. I feel fat, all I really, really want to do it run. For those who know me know this is not too much of a request from me. I’m so tempted to just go now even thou it is like pitch black. It gets dark over here at like 6pm…I mean like dark. The hotel we are in is ... read more

Our last bit of Vietnam is the Mekong Delta. Vietnams rice bowl - lots of paddy fields. We booked a tour with a small group for 3 days: cunning business concept: They specialise in small groups, charge double to the competition, advertise only local transport (to really get the feel of things) and then make a fortune as their costs are so low. Grumble grumble but we saw loads and enjoyed it very much. Ist day we went from a city bus from Saigon to a regional bus to Can Tho (there was loud vietnamese standup comedy videos all the way) It was funny how the vietnamese passangers giggled away. then a cyclo (like a wheelchair with a bicycle attached at the back) each to the river where we cought a boat, where we went for ... read more

Greetings Fellow Reactionary Stereotypes, Just before I start Saartje reminded me of a mildly amusing incident at Can Tho the morning we were heading back to My Tho for the Grooms family ceremony. We had to pick the bride up at 4am, but when we arrived she wasn't ready so we walked across the road to a cafe that was open (the Vietnamese always get up ridiculously early) and ordered some drinks. All I can safely say is not many people have had to sit in a road side cafe at 4am drinking coffee while watching a Bruce Lee film (with a lot of Vietnamese) all while waiting for a bride! This is where we start our extensive travels of the Mekong. I should say right from the start that My Tho is not a tourist ... read more

Hi! From HCMC we booked a 3 day trip through Mekong Delta to Phnom Penh in Cambodia. the tour was like every cheap tour is. not really bad!! we made a good bargain, because we didn't had just the mekong delta, but also a coconutcandy-produktion, a listening of traditional vietnamese music, crocodile farm (poor, poor, poor! - one crocodile escaped from his bag, but the mouth was tied - so no danger!), weaving traditional scarfs, production of rice noodles and so on. and we had a funny tour guide, whose english could have been slightly better. he continued to tell us that we should "get off the bus -------- please!" which listened like a command! but the mekong delta was really great! in little boat we were going by rowing, it was quiet and peaceful! on the other ... read more

Greetings fellow Volcanoligists, Thanks to the earthquake in Taiwan it has been impossible to access the electrical interwebs in a timely manner, hence the massive delay (and no doubt much consternation on your part being bereft of my awesome writing powers for so long) with an update. A fair bit has happened so I am going to split the past few weeks up into reasonably small entries for the benefit of your tiny attention spans.... I shall pick up in My Tho where we left off. So it came time to attend the wedding. Now weddings here in Vietnam come in two parts; there is a ceremony and a reception for the brides family and then another for the groom. It just so happened that the bride lived in Can Tho, a fairly big city in ... read more

Greetings Fellow Actuaries, This is going to be a long one so strap yourselves in. So on the 21st I dragged Saartje out of bed 6.30am (I had been up for over an hour and had completed my daily 15km sprint), packed our belongings into our trusty plastic shopping bags, headed down stairs for breakfast and waited for the arrival of the taxi that had been booked for us at 7.20am. Our bus to My Tho left at 8am from the Cho Lon bus station over the other side of town so we thought we wouldn't chance anything and get there early. So when the taxi arrived at 7.40am we thought we were in a spot of bother. What followed was the most hair raising taxi ride either of us had ever experienced. There was traffic ... read more

And so here we are - leaving Vietnam after 43 days of exploring an amazing country. Having conquered the North and most of in between, the only thing remaining on the 'to do' list was the Mekong Delta. Departing at 8am, we had a short bus ride to the pier, where we then boarded a ferry type boat to travel along the Mekong out of Saigon to My Tho, a large village/town in the Mekong Delta region. Avoiding buses once again, we decided that the boat was a great option, allowing us to see Saigon from a different perspective, and allowed us to sit around a table to play cards when bored with the scenery! First we travelled through the industrial part of the Mekong, and then gradually the banks became more and more occupied with ... read more
