The adventure begins with an early start and this sets the scene for the whole adventure on the Mekong - early mornings! We were debating how to attack the Mekong (not literally) adventure, do it on our own or through a tour. So to cost things up we stumbled into Delta Adventures and a tour cost about 18$ US per day each including accomodation, some meals and with some cool activities, so we decided to go with that, we planned a four day three night trip with a home stay and the plan was to abandon the tour in Chau Doc and make our way to Ha Tien for the ferry to Phu Quoc. We had to be at the office for 7am for our minivan to the port and like everything in Vietnam you spend ... read more

During my trip in Saigon, I went on a day trip to the Mekong Delta. After taking a bus two hours to the bay, we got on a boat and went along the river to a bee factory where we got to try some honey tea and banana wine (which was nasty). After the bee factory we took a row boat down a canal, listened to some traditional Vietnamese music and then went to ride bikes through the village... This is where my conversation with myself begins... Duc (our tour guide): Ok, now we're going to ride some bikes throughout the village, will everyone be ok? Me: I don't know, I haven't ridden a bike in about 15 years. Duc: Oh, you'll be ok. Getting on the bike, I'm staring at it wondering if I should ... read more

I decided to go for a trip to the Mekong Delta. Having been unimpressed with Saigon Tourist previously, I decided to go with Sinh Cafe this time. The Mekong Delta is one of the biggest rice regions in Vietnam. Growing enough rice there to feed the whole country and more. It is not just about rice farms though. There is a lot of local produce, with many fruits coming from here. The river itself flows from the sea, across Vietnam and into Cambodia. Historically the area near the border was a dangerous place, with Cambodians attacking regularly. It is much more settled now though and regular tourist trips will travel from Ho Chi Minh City up the river into Cambodia. For our day trip, we left Ho Chi Minh City at 830am and the journey to ... read more

My Tho We had a bit of a stressful journey from Saigon to My Tho - being overcharged, and refused to be let of the bus - lesson learnt - even if it is pouring down with rain and thundering (which it was) and you are being ushered into a bus…check the price first! Agro over - the bus did drop us in My Tho and thankfully we had left the rain and thunderstorm (and rude bus drivers) in Saigon! We walked a long way towards the centre of My Tho, and after a while found a hotel with a great view from the top floor. We could see out across the waters of the Mekong delta, with all the boats coming and going, and the houses with the Mekong as their back garden. We had ... read more

Before leaving Siam Reap we asked the hotel we were staying at in HCMC to book a Mekong Delta tour for us for the next day. When we arrived at the hotel the desk person said there was one tour available and it would be all day and cost $8 per person. We also got our room which was quite a bit lower in the building (not recommended by our travel guides) and rested up for the fun to come. We got up in the morning, had our breakfast (egg scramble), and then loaded the bus for our tour. Well, actually it was loading the bus to get some gas, and then consolidate all of the tourists at the tour office to be loaded on different buses going here and there and everywhere. Then we were ... read more

By Tegan... It is with alot of mixed feelings that I will head into tomorrow, it being our last day here. We have achieved so much and the walls are almost complete with the floor and roof to be finished after we go. The overwhelming part though will be the sadness having to leave these great people in their welcoming and lovely home and neighbourhood. As a housewarming gift we got the family a rice cooker and a water purifier. They had neither of these things so that will also help to make their lives easier and hopefully healthier. The scaffolding has hit some pretty scary heights and I am now more happier than ever to be 'larger'. Carinda being the lightest on our team has had to enounter some very interesting scaffolding structures with little ... read more

By Carinda... Sinjow is how to pronounce hello in vietnamese so we are both starting to pick up some of the language :) Well following on from T's blog... the build site has come along so well by late thursday we were working on scaffolding as the walls became above our head height. It is pretty tiring work but I love the fact you can see the result of your efforts! Over the weekend we have been able to have some R & R, we ventured further down the mekong and visited a bustling floating market which was fun. We also went to a restaurant last night and tasted one of the local delicacies... snake - was salty like fish and had the texture of chicken :) Well that about all for now, it is dinner ... read more

We took a Mekong delta tour today. Our group (26 people) consists of Canadian, French, Australian, American, Singaporean and 1 Brasilian girl. We left Saigon this morning and arrived in My Tho at 11:00 AM. We cross the Mekong river (My Tho) from My Tho to go to Ben Tre. The My Tho river is a natural border between Tien Giang province and Ben Tre province. In the past, to reach Ben Tre from My Tho people need to take a ferry but since 2007 the Rach Mieu bridge was opened. In Ben Tre, we went along some little canals where dua nuoc is abundant. We saw a demonstration how coconut candy was made. After lunch we saw a place where honey was made and we took this honey to mix with hot tea. That tea ... read more
