During the American War, considerable fighting took place in 3 provinces (Dak Lak, Kon Tum and Gia Lai) which I visited on this trip. In the spring of 1972, the area in and around Kon Tum province was devastated by hundreds of US B-52 raids during the course of a major battle. You may have heard about the Charlie Hill, which was the famous site of the battle in Dak Tô - Tân Cảnh. Kon Tum city is the capital of Kon Tum province. There are more than 10 ethnic minority groups in this province, for example, Bahnar, Jrai, Sedang, Rengao etc. A few years ago I met an American veteran, who used to work as a helicopter maintenance engineer in Kon Tum during the late 1960s. He shared with me his surprise when he went ... read more

Day four was spent whizzing along the west Ho Chi Minh trail enjoying the views; stopping off for coconuts and visiting waterfalls, pagoda's, war memorials, brick factories and various other little stops along the way. At our overnight stop in Kon Tum we enjoyed an amazing vietnamese barbecue of wild boar, venison and goat to name but a few (I was assured none was dog or cat!), 17 beers and all for the princely sum of £4. Our first stop on day five was to a catholic wooden church and the orphanage attached to it; the Banna tribe in the highlands used to bury the babies with the mother if the mother had died during childbirth, now the nuns take in these children and give them an amazing quality of life. We were lucky enough to ... read more

Open tour bus versus local bus So I was ready to leave Hue, but instead of doing the same route everyone else seemed to be doing, that of the trip south to Na Trang, I decided to go to the Central Highlands. The hotel receptionist in Hue just couldn’t understand this and asked “why you not go to Nah Trang?” even saying that the Central Highlands were not nice! They are so obsessed with getting us foreign tourists on the open tour bus because they all get a commission for each hotel - that getting a “local” bus instead is not an option. Frustratingly, not one travel agency I visited was able to find out when buses ran from the local bus station. So I just had to get up early and make my way to ... read more

Another great day on the bikes, cooler to start off with, but scorching in the afternoon. Been stupidly hot and sweaty! Covered a lot less miles and checked into the hotel before lunch. Spent the afternoon going to visit more minority villages and the people have been so friendly and nice. The guide has been translating and they're just as interested in asking us questions as we are them. Went into the chiefs house and his wife sat with us. The community traditionally have these huge bamboo long houses that serve as meeting rooms, they have the highest roofs you've ever seen! The villages had, in the last few years receieved money from the Vatican to build their own churches, saving the villagers from the long walks every weekend. We went to a woodern church, and ... read more

Being Chased by the Bacon You’re in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country and you’ve just reached the end of a dead end road; a man comes up to you and introduces himself as a traffic Police man. The Police in this country don’t follow the rules - they make them. You half don’t believe he’s a Police man due to his lack of obvious uniform and dodgy looking ID card, but know you’re in the wrong - you’re riding without a Vietnamese license, and you’ve a good idea what he wants to do - but nobody is around - what do you do? Making the correct response in that situation perhaps seems obvious sitting in your arm armchair reading this; you play ball and just hope it doesn’t end up costing too much. ... read more

Easy Rider Tour: Part 1 We signed up with Hoan & Xiian for a 9 day tour through the Central Highlands of Vietnam. They promised to show us the real Vietnam, to take us off the beaten track and see very few tourists, and this is what we experienced. During the tour we stopped at 8 different minority villages and were able to go inside their houses, which were all very basic (fireplace, floor, maybe a bed). They all cook over an open fire and have only one room. In many of the houses the whole family sleeps on the floor together. Throughout our tour we ate at local restaurants eating only local food. We tried porcupine, dear and wild boar (as well as the ususal chicken and beef etc). We had Vietnamese BBQ, roast chicken ... read more

Hi All, Another lot of free Internet time at our hotel in Hue so I thought, whilst Nat is frying, I would update you with a new post. We left Nha Trang aboard two Honda Federal motorbikes with our drivers Bang and Chu heading into the mountaineous region of the Central Highlands. This trip was brilliant, both of us pushed our envelopes out as it was a fair jump from the 20 minute honda trip we made in the Mekong, this was a four day three night trip on motorbikes, over the next four days we would cover somewhere in the region of 930KM so we were pretty nervous at the beginning, however the scenary in this part of Vietnam is absolutely beautiful and it must be seen to be believed, it was not all sunshine ... read more

We are now in the Central Highlands and have made our way from Saigon to Da Lat to Kon Tum. The bus journey from Saigon to Da Lat took us through some wonderful scenery which gradually changed from jungle covered mountains to coffee and tea plantations. Not even these winding mountain roads with their sheer drops and blind bends can stop Vietnamese bus drivers from overtaking with a honk of the horn so we were pretty pleased to arrive in one piece. The first thing we noticed about Da Lat was the change in climate. As we are now in the mountains it is much cooler, especially at night, while there is a constant threat of rain in the air. It's quite pleasant and gives our skin a rest from the factor 40. Da Lat has ... read more
