Take our faulty shower unit off the wall right after breakfast to take into Phon Thong with us. When we get there the shop takes the unit along with the guarantee and we will have to wait and see what happens now. No food shopping today but an electric extension lead and a couple of light bulbs so that we dont back empty handed. A new shop opened when we were in England and we decide to go and have a look around. It seems to sell everything and is clean, tidy, has aircon and is not too busy. Combined with the fact that the prices are OK as well we will more than likely be coming back when we come to do shopping next time.
Bike back to the house to change and have a coffee then out to the farm to see how things are progressing.
It looks as though they are going to clear quite a bit of land so Jai could end up with about 15% more ricefields next year.
Withe ricefields still largely full of water there are lots of small streams crossing the land. They net the points where the water crosses from one field into
the next and catch a collection of small fish and some freshwater crabs which can also be picked up at random around the fields. We take a bucket with us and collect about a dozen. The old people in particular love these when they are pounded into a paste and they can dip their sticky rice in them. They sell for about 2p each so no getting rich quick. Walking along one of these streams in search of the uneatable my sandal comes off in the sticky mud. With the water now all cloudy I have great fun trying to find it again and then extract it from the ground whilst balanced on one leg. Hardly the great white hunter !!
Within 10mins of getting back to the house Jai has our 'kill' boiling in a pan for lunch - not mine ! She then hops over the back garden wall and returns with some tree leaves for an accompanying curry. Who needs shops ?
John and George seem to keep missing each other by about 5mins and we get a visit from both again this afternoon.
In the evening we get a phone call from Jai's son in Bangkok and he doesnt
want us to take Fin with us when we go to Khon Kaen on Monday in case we lose her in the city !! We bike to Fin's other grans house for a chat about things but I have told Jai that its up to him so long as he is the one who tells her she cant come. We phone him back so that he can pass on the news and Fin runs off crying. As a compromise we take her back to our place to stay the night and for the moment the holiday is forgotten.
Brother Pad comes to tell us that they have started work clearing the land at the farm.
