Aranyaprathet (Thailand) - Penang (Malaysia): 7th - 28th Feb 2013 Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 4735 km In some of our earlier blog entries we showed off about the challenges we faced from cycling through Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. However, we have found that our fantastic trip down the Thai peninsular (i.e. the bit that looks like an elephant's trunk) with all its beaches and seaside towns has left us little hardship to boast about, but plenty of 'gloatable' times instead. Much like swimming in chocolate, Thailand has been rather pleasurable, gluttonous at times, and resulted in us being quite brown. We’ve still covered some big miles, but on this stage our ‘off-the-bike’ days have incorporated Scuba diving (Ko Tao), climbing (Krabi), and eating pancakes on the beach (everywhere). So, a few lists about ... read more

Ahhh Thailand, there’s this ‘smell’ as you step off the plane in Thailand … it’s not a good smell or a bad smell it’s just… Thailand! I love it! It’s heat, spices, pollution, a foreign country, holidays, all combined in one. We’ve been to this charming South East Asian country a dozen plus times now, to various places and for varying lengths of time, in fact I’d been in Bangkok for a night just a few weeks earlier on our way TO New Zealand. Every time it feels like coming home. I guess it’s just the familiarity of it all and that we’ve loved every trip we’ve ever had there. It’s the gorgeous, friendly Thai people, the amazing weather, the huge range of things to do-see-experience from the very north of the country to the south ... read more

I am now writing this blog two weeks after I actually did all of this because I have been quite busy with midterms and papers (shocking, I know). Preface: Tanner is my cousin (my dad's older brothers son). He is 25 and is in his last week of serving two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand. I was lucky enough to have my study abroad here over lap his Peace Corps service. I have been looking forward to this weekend since arriving in Thailand! Tanner happened to be coming up to Bangkok for a post Peace Corps health check up and asked if I would want to go back to his village with him after his stay in Bangkok. The timing couldn't have been better for me, after a month and a half without ... read more

After an 8 hour bus and boat journey we arrived into the island of Kho Tao, where we met back up with Nick. I ended up spending 5 days on the island; It's a beautiful place and was a lot more relaxed than Phi phi (and supposedly more chilled than Phangnan and Samui too). Although it's still being rapidly developed and even some photos we saw from 1995 show a completely different island. It's known for its diving and snorkelling, so one morning we got a long boat to a nearby tiny island called Nang Yuan. You pay a small fee to enter but it means it's being protected and unspoilt. We hired some snorkels and spent the day exploring. I began by accidentally inhaling litres of salty sea water but once I'd got the hang ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Southern Thailand » Nakhon Si Thammarat January 21st 2013

Continuing northwards, it was a 4h local bus ride to Nakhon Si Thammarat, the provincial capital, and second largest city in the south. It's right on the highway to the ferry jump-off point to Koh Samui (my next intended destination), so it seemed like a good place to drop by for a couple of days. Considering its location en route to the tourist and backpacker mecca that is Koh Samui, it's quite surprising how few tourists actually stop here. During my two days here, I barely counted a handful of falangs. And it's a pity too, as the city houses the impressive Wat Phra Mahatat, a sizeable temple and stupa complex that houses a Buddha tooth and other relics. And of course it offers perhaps a more authentic look at typical Thai life in the secondary ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Southern Thailand » Hat Yai January 20th 2013

After a rather lengthy 7h sequence of taxi, ferry, sawngthaew, local bus, and lastly motorcyle ride, I finally marked my return to the Land of Smiles with my arrival in Hat Yai, the fourth-largest city in the country, and arguably the commercial heart of the Southern provinces. As a major transport hub, Hat Yai sees hordes of tourists and businessmen from neighbouring Malaysia daily, and walking around the downtown area, it almost seems like I hear more of the Malaysian-Chinese dialects (Mandarin, Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese) being spoken than Thai itself! On several occasions I was greeted by vendors in those dialects, rather than Thai. Quite clearly the Chinese diaspora has had a significant influence here over the years. Yet this didn't come as a particular surprise to me. I'd known my Chinese grandparents had a ... read more

Visit to Patong Beach, Phuket Island at our 14 Night Gems of Southeast Asia Cruise on Celebrity Millennium. We anchored in Patong bay with about 20 minutes tender-voyage to Patong Beach. A typical Thai resort town and very touristy. We walked along the beach and through market streets. Lots of stalls where you could buy counterfeit goods and food vendors. The short video does give a feeling of the city tour.... read more

Onto our fourth week in Thailand and I think we would agree hands down that it was our best yet. It sounds cheesy but I'll say it anyway- The bad days and the waiting game of 12 hour bus/coach/boat journeys are all worth it for the good days and the amazing things that you can be a part of out here. When you're 6 hours into a 12 hour journey, you've exhausted your itunes library and the smelly man next to you is trying to snuggle into your shoulder, all can seem a little bleak. When the bags are put down, you've got a room and you head out to explore the new however, that period is disregarded in an instant and you forget it ever happened. With a few days of rest and recovery under ... read more
