I have had a fairly eventful week just gone. I left my friend in Krabi, having enjoyed the luxury of his little guesthouse and his girlfriend's cooking for more days than I had planned, and headed north to Khao Sok National Park, which forms part of one of the largest untouched areas of rainforest in S.E.Asia. As soon as I left the bus it began to rain, and it meant business. Although it didn't last for long, it was certainly the heaviest rain I have experienced thus far in Asia. In true tropical style it would rain roughly around the same time every day for the duration of my stay, so at least I knew when to run for cover. I was in Khao Sok NP over the Thai New Year, better known as Songkhran. I ... read more

Bonjourno, we managed to get to Hat Yai and book into a cheap hostel on 1st April. After the travelling from Krabi we didn't get much of a chance to explore much before darkness descended (We did however manage to get a KFC, sooo cheap over here for a Zinger meal!) The Thai Prime Minister is in hot water at the mo, he's been accused of corruption many times in the past but this time it's really serious- There've been protests around the country for weeks demanding he stands down. The situations got so bad that he has called an election for April 2nd, pledging to stand down if he doesn't get 50% of the vote. Why am i boring you with info on a political situation at the other side of the world you ask, ... read more

Hello everyone and welcome to the lastest enstalment of Jonny's travel blogs, a mediocre literary piece of stunning events!!! The last time I was writing how much I hated Phuket!! Well the hatred never deteriorated from the awful place as that night we went out for a few boys only to have our faces slammed into the seedy world of Thai drinking. Everywhere I looked was the view of European blokes sleezig over a young thai girl; we even saw a few proper lady boys who held no shame to lift up there manly adams apples and female boobs!! Not bootiful! I went home early that night and thought "J sprig sprog you need a change of scenery, your more stale than a loaf of bread"! So the next day I went it alone. The boys ... read more

Beautiful islands & most relaxed people, finally I found my paradise & ultimate relaxation ton sai beach: small beach next to famous railay, 30min boat ride from krabi, tonsai is now what railay used to be years ago when it was still unspoiled, whereas railay is covered with big luxurious concrete buildings attracting hords of package deal tourists from krabi, ton sai is the affordable alternative for climbersand travellers: small beach huts, reggae bars with open mic nights, extremely friendly and relaxed locals, climbers and travellers, very small place with just a few bars, but after 1-2 days you seem to know everyone already, very laid back, me likey a lot and stay there for 4 days: chilling, boat trip to amazing islands close by, snorkeling, doing a climbing course, despite of me being afraid of ... read more

Woke up early got the bus to the border, got stamped out of Malaysia and into Thailand. Arrived at Sungai Kolok train station and I asked for 2 sleepers with air cond and the thai guy just laughed. We didn't realise that there were 2 public holidays coming up and all the sleepers were booked up. So we got 3rd class tickets with fan for the 22 hour journey costing 240baht ($A7) . Later we realised that we were so lucky to even get seats, as the trip went on, kids started sleeping under seats, men and women who couldn't get seats were lying down on newspaper on the floor in a pool of sweat and I was climbing over bodies to get to the toilet. The train stopped at almost every station up the east ... read more

In Hatyai, we sat down at a restaurant (near the travel agency where we alighted) and discussed over some iced-cold chrysanthemum tea on what to do next. We agreed on another continuing, tiring trip to Ko Samui, instead of stopping at Hatyai for an overnight stay. I guessed we would have both agreed on staying overnight in Hatyai, if we know we would be shoved into a mini van/bus for another hellish, long bus ride. Well, it’s my fault for suggesting that we go all the way. :P There were 9 travellers heading for Ko Samui. 9 of us squashed into a mini (and I really do mean it when I said it's small), 10-seater van/bus on a hot day, not very pleasant I must say. But the excitement of the trip keeps my ... read more

2012 - These entries have been copied from emails I sent home in 2001. I can't help but laugh at them now - many years of travelling since have changed our values etc so much. I guess our experiences and expectations now have been shaped by these earlier travels. I'm also pleased to note that my photography skills have improved - very few photos were taken on this trip - maybe too many are taken today with digital cameras..... Jerry and I have been in Thailand now for four days and are enjoying it a lot but we are finding it much harder than Malaysia to find our way around. The main problem is language - nobody speaks any English and to make it harder all the signs are written in squiggly Thai symbols… All part ... read more
